Carrying themselves with exceptional grace, the Goldmaraner is a medium to large breed dog that has a very aristocratic appearance. These hybrids are a cross between the merry Golden Retriever and the independent Weimaraner. The Goldmaraner is a hybrid with high energy demands and needs to be in an environment where he can run, play and learn. They often do well in a household with other pets and children, however socialization at a young age is necessary in order to achieve such a friendly trait. Goldmaraner Breed History

The elegant Weimaraner is a large breed dog that is said to have originated in Germany around the 1800s’. Also known as the "grey ghost", this breed has undergone a lot of selective breeding in order to attain the tranquil beauty and skill at agility that he is known for. The breed was originally designed for the purpose of hunting and it is theorized that a mix of German Bracken (a type of hound), German Gundogs, German Shorthaired Pointers, Bloodhounds and likely various other pointing breeds make up the lineage. The Weimaraner was officially recognized as a sporting dog by the American Kennel Club in 1943. The Golden Retriever is a breed that can be traced back to Newfoundland, Canada, the United Kingdom and Scotland. Some theories still suggest that this fun-loving breed was a likely descendant of circus dogs from Russia. It is widely accepted that the early ancestors of the Golden Retriever include the Tweed Water Spaniel, the Red Setter and other spaniel-type dogs. The Golden Retriever is a sporting breed which was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1925. Originally known for his skill at retrieving game from the water and returning it to the hunter unmarked or damaged, he presently continues to display great intelligence and care as a drug detection dog, a service dog and a therapy dog. Additionally, he excels at search and rescue.

Goldmaraner Breed Appearance

The Goldmaraner is a medium to large breed dog that typically has a short to medium length coat which is considered weather and water-resistant. These coats can come in various colors such blues, grays, silver, and mixes of light or dark golds. The body of the Goldmaraner is often straight from the back with a slight slope at the withers. The chest is broad and overall, the body tends to be quite muscular. The head and muzzle may be long and slightly broad, the ears are often long, flopped down and wide. The eyes can come in colors such as amber, gray, blue-gray or brown. There may be feathering of longer fur on their long tails, belly region, paws, hind and forequarters.

Goldmaraner Breed Maintenance

Your Goldmaraner can be a seasonal to heavy shedder. Your hybrid will need to be brushed with a pin brush at least a few times a week in order to decrease the amount of loose fur. Because the Goldmaraner loves to swim and has a long feathered ear, air circulation within the ear may be limited, meaning that checking of the ears is essential to avoid infection or build up of yeast and bacteria. He will need his nails clipped bi-monthly unless he wears them down more quickly with activity. Brush his teeth several times a week to keep the gums healthy and the teeth white.

Loyal, playful and a great watchdog, the Goldmaraner is a breed that can make a wonderful companion for any household. When meeting strangers, these hybrids may be a bit wary and may bark in order to protect and alert their owners. Their barks are often not aggressive as these dog are people lovers. This hybrid may retain a high prey-drive temperament, and as such they may be inclined to chase small animals around the backyard. However, with early socialization they tend to get along quite well with other pets such as small dogs, cats, and birds. These dogs are quite strong, so always monitor your hybrid when he is playing with young kids as they can easily knock them over due to their size.

Goldmaraner Activity Requirements

The Goldmaraner is a breed that is best suited to a fairly active family lifestyle. They generally do well in all environments so long as they get their daily walks and playtime. These dogs will enjoy games such as fetching and retrieving games, agility courses, visits to the dog park and long walks or runs. They do well in all climates, but as with all dogs, do not leave them outside in the extreme cold or heat. These hybrids require at least 45 to 60 minutes of daily activity, however, bear in mind that puppies and young adult canines may require 60 to 75 minutes of daily activity.
