Greybull Pit Breed History

The hybrid called the Greybull Pit is a new breed of dog that does not have a detailed history. Each of the hybrid’s two parent breeds have long histories, however. In the early 19th Century, Bull and Terrier breeds were developed in England for the sports of bull and bear baiting. As these sports became illegal in 1835, a sport was sought to take their place; this lead to dog-fighting and aggression being bred into the dogs. The dogs were also bred so as to not bite people, leading to the breeds becoming known for being strong and protective as well as gentle. Bull and Terrier breeds arrived in the United States with those who immigrated and began to be put to work on farms, taking responsibility for hunting wild game and protecting the land from animals. Breeding efforts became focused on increasing the dog’s size. These dogs were named the American Pit Bull Terrier by the UKC in 1898. In the early 1930’s the breed became recognized by the American Kennel Club by the name American Staffordshire Terrier so as to separate the current form from his past as a fighter. Seen in Egyptian art and the Bible, the Greyhound is an ancient breed, having arrived in Europe during the Dark Ages. Dogs of the breed have always had significant speed as well as excellent hunting skills. The popularity of the Greyhound grew in England as a result of coursing, a sport that involves chasing prey, and racing. The breed arrived in North and South America when brought along with British colonists and Spanish explorers, gaining recognition by the American Kennel Club in 1885.

Greybull Pit Breed Appearance

The Greybull Pit is a hybrid dog from the American Pit Bull Terrier and the Greyhound. While much information is not available about the appearance of the Greybull Pit, one can consider the appearance of the hybrid’s parent breeds. The American Pit Bull Terrier’s head is broad and his neck is muscular. Dogs of the breed are stocky and strong for their size, while remaining agile. The eyes of the American Pit Bull Terrier are round and his teeth will typically form a scissors bite. The breed’s coat will consist of thick, short hair and the dog can be seen in a variety of colors. The Greyhound is tall and lithe, with long legs and a thin body. The head of the Greyhound is long and narrow and will be topped with small ears that while typically folded back, becoming upright upon his getting excited. The eyes of a Greyhound are usually dark and the neck of the breed will be arched. The Greybull Pit is most often seen with the longer body of the Greyhound but the likeness of the hybrid is very similar to the Pit Bull. Typically with a squarish head and a thick neck, he does have a long nose like the Greyhound.

Greybull Pit Breed Maintenance

The Greybull Pit will have an easy coat to maintain. He will shed, and a daily brushing with a slicker brush is recommended to keep the loose fur under control. This hybrid should not need to be bathed often as an offending doggy odor is not typical. The Greyhound parent is prone to weight gain and also to having poor dental health. A good quality food is a must as is a daily brushing of the teeth. An active dog like the Greybull Pit should have his nails checked weekly for signs of damage or injury.

Greybull Pit Temperament

The Greybull Pit will inherit his temperament from his parents. The American Pit Bull Terrier is a confident, courageous dog who loves people. A dog of the breed will let you know that a stranger is approaching due to his excitement to greet the visitor. The American Pit Bull Terrier can be stubborn, therefore early obedience training is important for your relationship. Very loyal to his family, an American Pit Bull Terrier will put his life on the line to defend those he loves. The Greyhound is typically social and not aggressive. Dogs of the breed are independent and intelligent, often sensitive to any tension occurring in the home. Having been bred to hunt, the Greyhound may seek to chase small animals that he comes across. The Greyhound may be stubborn during training, though will typically respond better to food rewards as a result of his sensitive nature, rather than harsh training efforts. The Greyhound will do well with children, and will calmly remove himself if their play does not suit him. Your hybrid will be a wonderful combination of his parents, sensitive to those around him but with a mind of his own. Consistent firm instruction will be needed; with that, the Greybull Pit can grow to be dependable and a pleasure to own.

Greybull Pit Activity Requirements

The Greybull Pit is very active with a high energy level. About an hour each day of walking, playing or participating in some form of exercise is essential. Keeping busy is important; should he become bored, he can misbehave. As the Greybull Pit will chase small animals thinking that they are prey, it is necessary that he be walked on a leash or play in a secure, fenced-in area. Ideally, a home with a large yard is best for the Greybull Pit. He is the type of dog that needs to run daily. He does mind the cold, though so should never be left outside for extended periods of time. This dog wants to be with the family, he’ll need companionship when in the backyard and may enjoy a game of fetch as part of his exercise routine. Your Greybull Pit will be a strong dog with an independent spirit; obedience classes are a must in order for him to learn commands and understand that you are the leader.

He has been much harder to train than our other Pitties. Definitely NOT easygoing & quiet like a traditional bully breed. This dog Never stops & needs constant supervision/attention. Left alone he will get into places & things you may not even know exist in your home & tear them up in an instant. His nose is always focused on some scent. He’s exceptionally clever & will manipulate you with a pathetic look & instant affection. A great watchdog & gentle with our toddler. Long/short: Like raising 2yr old triplets.

Rosie is very affectionate towards people, likes some dogs, most annoy her. She loves to play but also loves to sleep. She is a chewer, but it is easy to teach her what to and what not to chew on. Fairly obedient but she tends not to listen too well when excited or in a new area.

My Lana is a sweet and often timid girl who needs gentle introduction to new people due to her abusive past. She loves to sleep all day and is social but never aggressive with other dogs. She loves to go on short runs. She likes to play ball but will not excessively play, as she has short bursts of energy before cuddling up for another nap. We go on 2-3 walks per day. She prefers smaller dogs as friends since larger intimidate, but is friendly with everyone.

We adopted PJ from a foster at about 18 months. He learns very quickly and is very treat motivated, has become one of the kids and loves to be a part of the family. PJ enjoys rides in the truck to the store, coffee shop drive thru or the park. We go for walks for about a half hour to an hour per day and he gets to play in the back yard at his leisure. We knew right away he was a great guard dog and only barks when alerted or super excited. PJ is very protective of his human siblings, and loves to be outside with them but occasionally plays a little rough, which we are currently working on. He seems to be almost too intelligent for the most challenging of toys. He has to have a challenge to keep him occupied, otherwise he does like to find random household things or kids toys to tear up. While he's very polite and has great manners overall, we have found he isn't the biggest fan of men at first, but will warm up fairly quickly. All in all, Preston Juarez and his quirks are a great fit for our active, crazy family and we are very proud and happy to have him!

The most loving and loyal dog I have ever owned and believe...will ever own. My girl's name is Lola and she is smarter than most humans I have encountered. I say that not in a joking manner.she is my family for sure and goes everywhere with me and also...has more pillows to sleep with than I do. Listens to commands and learns after one teaching usually. I love this breed

Jinx is the most loving dog that has ever been a part of our family. He truly believes he is a human and is always right next to us. Jinx can sense when the slightest thing is wrong and is ready to comfort in anyway he can. He is a quick learner and knows many tricks. His personality keeps us laughing all the time as he is vocal about his feelings. A small “Yip!” or a loud bark is sure to get our attention. Although Jinx is happy to lend his paw for a handshake to mostly everyone, if he senses danger he becomes very protective.

We got joey at 1 1/2 years from Battersea dogs home. He is the most loving and energetic dog(my fav out of our 4 our lurches). He is very protective and can get jealous of the other dogs. As he has had a hard past, got sent back to battersea after an incident with another family who had young children; definitely not the right family for his breed. He is always trying to please however is a very anxious dog and has instinct to prey on deer. He is also very strong and can be overwhelming to other dogs on walks. Wouldn’t change him for the world but with his hard start to life he isn’t the easiest dog!

Ginny is a lovely dog, in the household she’ll cuddle on the sofa and allows us to pick her up or lie our head on her without a fuss. We got Ginny as a puppy from the dogs trust, her mother came to the shelter as a very anxious dog and they didn’t know she was having a litter until she did. As a puppy Ginny was incredibly anxious around all new people and situations. This meant that early training was more about getting her excited about new things instead of being anxious about them, the greyhound in her meant we needed to manage her adrenaline and get her to channel it into being something fun, not scary. She can be trained with food which makes it easier to teach her tricks but she easily get over excited. We found that doing training with her every hour for 5 minutes or until she was over excited really helped when she was younger. We didn’t know her breed exactly so we didn’t take into account the difference in training a pit bull needs. Whilst she is new great with people outside and our immediate family, bringing anyone new into the house is still a challenge for her. We get people to greet her with treats and this seems to have helped. We live in a town which means she is often trying to play with cats and squirrels. However when it comes to these situations her recall is really good now, we found that a dog whistle and a high end treat works wonders. Overall she likes to think she is a person and fits perfectly in our family, with 3 teenagers. She is very loyal, affectionate and easy going. She makes lovely company and used to adore our older lurcher. Our cat is not her biggest fan but Ginny still persists in befriending her, although she doesn’t chase her like she would other cats.

We love fetch
We love going for walks and running
Our greybull Bella, is extremely intelligent. We often refer to her as our fur Baby and refer to our human daughters as her sisters. Bella is extremely loving to our family and friends but is extremely suspicious of strangers. She can be initially very aggressive with other dogs until a friendship is formed. Bella's favorite activity is fetching a Frisbee in the yard. We chose a soft rubber Frisbee and cut the center out to allow for shorter flights and easier catching. Inside she fetches her stuffed squirrels and will continue to play until you command her to "take a break". She eats her dog food early in the day, and is often fed proteins from what ever meal the family eats. She is very spoiled in this regard and loves Salmon. She was trained early not to be possessive of food and will stop eating (even steak) if commanded to do so. We don't have other pets, so she gets our undivided attention. She has a large kennel that she has been trained to sleep in, but more often sleeps in bed with our youngest daughter. She loves to cuddle when relaxing, but often will try and manipulate us into playing fetch. She is walked on a leash daily and we prefer to have her connected to a harness system rather than the leash connected to a collar. She is a inside dog, but will often go through her doggy door and lay in the sun in the back yard. She is a amazing animal and such a blessing in our family.

Hello, She may be guarding you or just waiting for you to wake up to play. I do think that dogs sense when something is off or if you are sick.
