The Highland Maltie is a combination of two of the most popular small dogs, the West Highland White Terrier and the Maltese. Best described as a lively and alert little dog who is both sweet in temperament and possesses a high intelligence. The Highland Maltie is a true companion dog who is good with small children and other pets. Socialisation while young is essential to bring out the best characteristics in your Highland Maltie. They are very agile dogs and enjoy participating in competitive agility or obedience training which will keep them mentally stimulated. These dogs are less active than most, they are quite happy with a short daily walk or a game or two, but the thing they love most is snuggling up on your lap. Their luxurious coat is non shedding and may suit people who suffer allergies. They are both attractive in appearance with their white fluffy coat, dark eyes and pricked ears with an expression on their face that is a mix of mischief and devotion.

Highland Maltie Breed History

By reading the history of the parent dogs, we can see the traits that your Highland Maltie may have inherited. The Maltese has a fascinating history dating back at least two millennia. They are mentioned in the early cultures of the Greeks, Romans and Egyptians as prized dogs in ancient times. While his exact origin is unknown, some argued from the Isle of Malta, others Italy, while others claimed Asia as its birth place. But one thing is sure - this little dog flourished and enjoyed great popularity. In the  16th century it arrived in England to claim the hearts of royalty such as Queen Elizabeth 1, Mary Queen of Scots, and Queen Victoria. During the 17th and 18th centuries, attempts were made to breed them to be the size of a squirrel - this proved disastrous for the breed who were nearly destroyed. Dedicated breeders saved the breed by developing the Maltese as we know it today. The Maltese arrived in the United states of America in the late 1800s and has since slowly gained a foot hold in peoples hearts. The West Highland White Terrier originated in Scotland, and was used extensively to hunt foxes, badgers and to dig out and kill vermin such as rats. While there is limited data as to the Westie's exact history, they can be traced back to the 17th century. A local tale describes how the West Highland White Terrier gained its famous white coat. According to lore, Colonel Malcolm of Poltalloch was out hunting for foxes with his favourite wheaten colored Cairn dogs. During the excitement of the hunt, he accidentally shot and killed one of his dogs, believing it to be a fox. He was devastated and vowed it would never happen again and began breeding only white dogs and so the Westie was born. These loveable dogs even went by the name of the Poltalloch Terrier for some time, but in 1906 they were officially recognised by the Kennel Club of England as the West Highland White Terrier.

Highland Maltie Breed Appearance

Elegant, noble, and distinguished are some of the words used to describe the Highland Maltie. With its pure white coat and compact body, short legs and erect carriage, this is one dog that can capture hearts at will. They are slightly longer than they are tall, and their head is in proportion to their body giving an overall balanced appearance. The face features dark expressive eyes, fluffy eyebrows, and often feathering around its muzzle. The nose is black, and the ears are held erect and can often tip over at the top giving them a quizzical appearance. The tail is of average length, slightly fluffy and often curled up. The coat is silky and long but does not drag on the ground. Their paws are small and often fluffy with firm rounded black pads.

Highland Maltie Breed Maintenance

While the Highland Maltie has a low shedding coat that can be hypoallergenic, they do need regular brushing to keep their lovely white coat from becoming matted. Daily brushing with a strong bristle brush is recommended. This is a good time to check your pet for any injuries or sores on the body or feet, check the ears for infection, and just check their eyes to ensure their long eyebrows are not irritating the eyes. Bathe as needed, using a gentle dog shampoo that will help maintain the coats natural oils which will make grooming a lot easier. If your Highland Maltie has a yard to run in, he may need bathing more than an indoor dog, as they love to dig and explore. Training your dog while they are a puppy to get used to having their teeth brushed is a good practise. Most dogs enjoy the gentle attention of their grooming time.

Highland Maltie Temperament

The Highland Maltie gets its nature from a combination of traits for the parent dogs, the West Highland White Terrier, and the Maltese. This makes for a dog that has plenty of character. They are bold, almost fearless, and full of their own importance but loveable and funny at the same time. These dogs will not instigate a fight but will not back down if provoked. They do need to be socialised if you have other pets, as their natural instinct is to chase small animals. If you have small children, you need to supervise the play as the Highland Maltie can get a bit nippy if they are hurt or have their tail pulled. Teach your children to be kind and gentle with these little dogs. These fiesty little dogs can be a bit stubborn at times, mostly because they can think for themselves so the trick is to get them to think it is to their advantage to do what you ask and you will have no trouble. They can be a bit sensitive, so train using kind methods, plenty of praise and lots of small rewards and most of all - use a kindly tone. They are very intelligent dogs who will excell at learning tricks and love to be the center of attention. While not a hyperactive type of dog, they are busy bodies and require a daily walk. They can be yappy at times but can be trained to bark once to alert you then to stop. Digging is also part of their nature if they get bored - so keep them entertained and they will be fine.

Highland Maltie Activity Requirements

The Highland Maltie is not an overly active dog, but they are a busy dog. They will follow you about nosing around to find out what you are up to. They do enjoy a yard if you have one but it is not vital for these dogs. What is vital is a daily walk or play time at the pet park to burn off some energy and meet up with other dogs to run and tussle. A daily walk around the neighbourhood will be fine, and as your hybrid grows older he will enjoy games with the family and will play to win! These dogs make ideal apartment dogs as long as you train them not to bark excessively. They are companion dogs who love to be part of the family and they will be loyal and devoted friends.

Sophie was a rescue. She is believed to be a Maltese mix. We believe Highland Maltie mix. She is a very submissive dog but protective of me! She is not much of a barker. She growls or barks once if she sees large men approaching then she "guards" me! She is very well behaved during grooming. She loves to "dance" for treats. She is 14 pounds. I am very blessed to have found her.

Gizmo is a great companion. He is very smart and has lots of attitude. He loves to cuddle but he also loves to be out in the yard digging around or finding sticks to chew. Gizmo got parvo right after I got him at 3 months old. He was very sick but is a little fighter and made it through after 11 days at the Vet!

We adopted Henry from a rescue organization right in the middle of COVID lock-downs. He is the love of our lives! He's so cute, playful and affectionate. He can entertain himself for long stretches of time by throwing his own toys and fetching them for himself! He has brought our family so much joy. The only downsides to this pooch are the frequent grooming needs, as well as his reddish-brown "eye boogers," which I've learned are called tear stains. Oh, and he's still pretty young, so we have to be careful not to leave anything out, or he will chew it up. We love our Highland Maltie!

As a rescue from a full-time kennel life, socialization has been key, especially to noise. However, I must say this is easily the most affectionate dog I have had. I’m super happy with this breed and my husband’s allergies are too. If you want to come home to a super cute face and warm eyes, this is your breed.
