The Husky Jack is an energetic combination of a Siberian Husky and a Jack Russell Terrier. These active pups are bold, loyal, and loving. They are medium-sized with an average life span of 11 to 16 years, weight of 30 to 40 pounds, and height of 17 to 19 inches. Their short and smooth coats are combinations or solid versions of white, black, gray, red, sable, and agouti with black, brown, tan, cream or tri-color markings. The Husky Jack is a well-known Husky mix that has likely been bred since the late 1900s. Still, this breed is not stabilized and, therefore, it is not recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) roster of purebreds.

Husky Jack Breed History

The name Husky Jack is a combination of the names of the dog’s two parent breeds: the Siberian Husky and the Jack Russell Terrier. Siberian Huskies were sled dogs in arctic regions of the world and were known for being companions and helpers to the Chukchi people thousands of years ago. Famous as well for a live saving expedition during an diphtheria epidemic in the early 1900’s, the sled pulling Huskies were heroes to all as they delivered serum to the sick through grueling circumstances. Later, they served in the United States Army’s search and rescue teams, and were recognized by the AKC in 1930. Today, the Siberian Husky is one of the most popular arctic breeds. The Husky Jack’s other parent, the Jack Russell Terrier, has a broad genetic makeup and was originally known as the “Fox Terrier”. Jack Russell Terriers were first bred from several small “working” dogs in England during the mid to late 1800s for hunting. The breed eventually migrated to the United States in the 1930s with a wave of immigration. During this time, disagreements between American and English breeders resulted in the evolution of two breed variations: the “English” version, which has longer legs and was renamed the “Parson Jack Russell Terrier” and the “American” version. Nonetheless, Jack Russell Terriers became very popular in North America during the mid-1900s. The breed experienced a renaissance in the 1990s when it starred in long running TV shows like “Frasier” and “Wishbone.” The hybrid combination of the Siberian Husky and the Jack Russell Terrier is relatively new and there is no known date of the Husky Jack’s origin. Still, this breed is likely to have been bred for decades and is loved for its lively personality by many.

Husky Jack Breed Appearance

Husky Jacks are unique looking dogs. They are medium-sized and muscular with erect or half pricked ears. They typically grow to be 17 to 19 inches tall and 30 to 40 pounds. Husky Jacks have arched necks and a sturdy stance, like that of a Jack Russell Terrier. Yet they also have powerful hind and forequarters and oval padded feet, like a Siberian Husky. Their coats are typically short and smooth with a soft undercoat and come in solid or multi-color variations of white, black, gray, red, sable, and agouti with black, brown, tan, cream or tri-color markings. Husky Jacks have brown or blue almond-shaped eyes and a friendly – almost goofy – expression. Overall, these dogs exude energy with their agile and bouncy gait.

Husky Jack Breed Maintenance

Husky Jacks are not hypoallergenic dogs and thus not suitable for owners with allergies. Their smooth and short coats do not require much grooming. Husky Jacks do, however, shed quite a bit – especially twice a year during seasonal changes. Owners can reduce shedding and keep their Husky Jack’s coat neat and shiny with weekly brushing sessions. This breed also needs to be bathed monthly and have its ears checked regularly for wax build up. Additionally, Husky Jacks should have their nails clipped or ground 1 to 2 times a month to prevent painful overgrowth or nail splitting. Like all breeds, Husky Jacks should have their teeth brushed daily.

Husky Jacks can suffer from a range of health problems. Secure pet health insurance today to avoid high veterinary care costs. Our pet insurance tool lets you compare plans from leading companies like Figo and Spot. Find the “pawfect” plan for your pet in just a few clicks!

Husky Jack Temperament

Husky Jacks are high energy pups. They love being active and social. This breed is friendly with most other dogs, but is known to assert its dominance in groups. As such, it is best to supervise Husky Jacks around new furry friends. Luckily, Husky Jacks also value their independence and enjoy playing by themselves or in the company of their favorite chew toy. These pups are also very intelligent and mischievous by nature. As a result, they may be stubborn and more difficult to train than some other breeds. Owners can combat this to some extent with obedience training and socialization from an early age. Also note that, given their bold temperament, Husky Jacks may not be the best companion for new owners, young kids, and cats. Still, this spirited animal can be very loving and loyal toward its family members and will never miss a chance to give and receive a little love.

Husky Jack Activity Requirements

Husky Jacks have an above average energy level and need quite a bit of exercise. They love long runs, hikes, and walks and should get between 45 and 90 minutes of such exercise a day. They may even enjoy a trip to the dog park. As such, Husky Jacks do best when they have access to a yard in a rural or suburban area. Still, because they are medium-sized, Husky Jacks can acclimate to urban or apartment living if they get enough outdoor time. Husky Jacks also love toys and can entertain themselves for significant periods of time if they have something to chew on. Nonetheless, it’s important to note that spending quality time bonding with family is also an important part of this pup’s day.

Our Melly is very independent and shows usually little affection (may also be due to her living in a difficult environment as a puppy - we adopted her) but excitement usually strikes on long walks on grass fields with many opportunities to hunt for field mice or playing with her squeaky toys right after dinner. She is able to play with them in her own but prefers us to at least sit with her for it. Outside of long walks and food time, she loves sleeping and spending time together on the sofa. No cuddling however, that’s not her style.

Our boy, Axle, is very friendly and affectionate. He loves his human family and is very loyal to us. He is michevious as he knows how to get out of his kennel when we are at work some days. He is very smart. He knows how to sit, jump, shake, lay down, go to bed, and stay. He also lets us know he needs to go potty by barking once. He doesn’t bark unless he needs to go potty or if someone is approaching our house. He isn’t very energetic like I thought he would be, especially being 7 months, but he does have energy and loves to play fetch. Overall, he is a very sweet, loving, loyal, and fun pup.

She was given to us when she was only 3 weeks old because her mom died. We had to give her puppy milk replacer and teach her Bite inhibition. She knows how to sit and wait when being fed and sleeps and play by herself at times. She likes to lick and sniff everything. Very lovable pup.

Gabriel is a fun loving addition to our family and companion to our other precious puppy, his 9 mo old Chiweenie brother Isaac. They play well together and enjoy family time together, such as zooming around the house chasing one another and playing tug o war with their toys and with mommy and daddy. I can tell we’re going to have many special, happy adventures with them as they continue to grow. There is never a dull moment in our household since our Gabriel joined the family unit. Isaac loves his new brother, they love playing and sleeping together.

Beautiful dog and greet pet to have. Needs a lot of attention, so make sure you play with them. Skin a bit sensitive, but bathing in gentle dog shampoo and making sure they drink enough water helps. Like a child to me...lol.
