The Jackweiler dog is a new designer breed that was bred from a Jack Russell Terrier and a Rottweiler. They are loyal and intelligent dogs who will have varying looks and personalities. These dogs are not suited for apartment life and, depending on the coat, should not be exercised a lot in the warm weather. They have an average lifespan of about 8 to 16 years and are usually very healthy pets. This breed does not have any special maintenance requirements, and should get along well with other pets as long as they get properly socialized when they are young.

Jackweiler Breed History

The Jackweiler is one of many new hybrid dogs that have been recently gaining popularity. Not much is known about the origin of these breeds, and therefore we must consider the history of the parent dogs. This particular breed is made from a Jack Russell Terrier and Rottweiler. The history of the Jack Russell Terrier begins during the 1800s in Devonshire, England. The breed was created by a man named Jack Russell, who was a student at Oxford University. One day while on campus he came across a small terrier dog, which he fell in love with and adopted. The ancestry of this dog is thought to be a mix of Black-and-Tan Terrier and a Fox Terrier. Jack Russell then chose to breed his dog to make a new dog type that would be small enough in size to enter fox dens but could also keep up with his hunting hounds. This eventually created the Jack Russell Terrier, which is thought to be a mix of Fox Terriers and Beagles. The look of these dogs could vary, since Russell valued the fearless but non-killer temperament of his dogs over appearance. Mr. Russell eventually passed away, but this new breed of dog lived on. They quickly gained popularity among sportsmen, who may have crossed them with Dachshunds, Corgis and other Terrier types, which also led to a variety of sizes and looks. Because of this large variety, the breed was not accepted into the American Kennel Club until 1997. Rottweilers as a breed do not have a very defined history, but are thought to have descended from drover dogs. These dogs were used many centuries ago to move livestock with the Romans. They would also accompany the Romans on their quest to conquer Europe by managing the large stocks needed to carry goods as well as protect the soldiers at night. A site with ancient Roman baths was ordered to be replaced with a Christian church by a local ruler in 700 A.D. An excavation took place and that is where some tiles from the old baths were discovered.  The site was named “das Rote Wil”, or “the red tiles”. The name was later changed to Rottweil, and was a place that was commonly occupied by cattlemen and butchers. These new settlers would bring along their dogs, which is why they were called Butcher’s dogs or Rottweiler Metzgerhund. The breed’s numbers faced a decrease in the mid-1800s throughout the industrial revolution due to a dying need for cattle dogs. These dogs then gained popularity as a police dog during the beginning of the 20th century.

Jackweiler Breed Appearance

The physical appearance of these dogs will vary among individuals, since some dogs may take on different characteristics from each breed. They could develop some traits from the Jack Russell Terrier, which is a little but very athletic dog. They have flat skulls and tapering ears that fold forward and are v-shaped, with a stop that is not abrupt but still defined. They have almond shaped eyes that will be dark in color, and a scissors bite. Their chests are small and the forelegs are long and straight. Their muscular hind ends are strong and finish with a high set tail. The Rottweiler is a big and powerful pup that has strong bodies and large heads. Overall they are a bit longer in length than height and have even toplines. Their ears will be triangularly shaped and pendant, and the nose, lips and inside of the mouth will be black in color. The deep-set eyes will be dark brown and almond shaped. They as well have scissor bite teeth but tails that are usually docked.

Jackweiler Breed Maintenance

Maintenance needs will be specific to each dog’s coat type. If the fur is similar to that of either type of Jack Russell Terrier, the fur will need to be brushed weekly. If brushed regularly, they will not need to be bathed very often. The broken coat type will need to be stripped about two times per year. Rottweilers as well will need weekly brushing that will need to increase in frequency during shedding season, which takes place twice a year. Overall maintenance includes teeth brushing, which should be performed every day or at least two or three times per week. Your dog’s nails will need to be trimmed about every month or two, but could be earlier or later depending on how quickly they wear down naturally. You should clean out your dog’s ears weekly in order to prevent ear infections. Do this once a week using a damp cotton ball, and monitor for any signs of existing infection.

Jackweiler Temperament

The exact temperament as well can be altered depending on which parent the offspring is more like. When you meet a Jack Russell Terrier, you will definitely notice their enthusiastic nature. They are sharp and very smart, but also quite sassy and mischievous. This, however, does not stop them from becoming great pets who excel in competitions. They are easily trainable and great family pets too. Alternatively, the Rottweiler is a calmer and very loyal dog breed. Although they are often portrayed as vicious and dangerous, this is incorrect as they will only act this way if taught to. These dogs are fearless and will protect their family, making them excellent guard and watch dogs. They are kind to strangers but may take some times to warm up to them. This breed can be a bit more of a challenge to train. All dog breeds should be sufficiently socialized and introduced to new people, pets and surroundings as a puppy in order to raise a calm and respectful pet.

Jackweiler Activity Requirements

Activity needs for this designer dog will be somewhere in between those of the Jack Russell Terrier and Rottweiler. Jack Russell Terriers are very energetic and will definitely need a big yard that is safely fenced in. These dogs have an immense amount of energy considering their size, and if they do not get exercised enough, they could become destructive. Remember to exercise your dog’s mind as well as body. Rottweilers can be prone to heat stroke, so do not over exercise your Jackweiler in the hot months if they possess the dark coat of this parent.

The most loyal and protective dog I’ve ever had. Lexi is a rescue and can be skittish and seem a bit aggressive with barking but just needs some time to warm up to new people. She’s very territorial of her home which we are slowly working on! Best dog ever

Lulu is really energetic and super friendly. She is good, if a little boisterous, when playing with other dogs and is great with children. She can get a bit over excited when people come to the house, jumping up and barking, but gets the message if we're firm with her. She is a beautiful dog and we love her to bits!

He has been very smart since young, and was initially friendly. Unfortunately, due to corona we could not properly socialize him and are doing our best as he becomes protective at times he hears noise from other family members we don't interact with at home. Otherwise, he wants to be with us, have fun and most importantly he loves food and is very food motivated.
