King Schnauzer Breed History

The appearance of the King Schnauzer is unclear and the hybrid was most likely first bred in the United States by crossbreeding a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Miniature Schnauzer.  The Miniature Schnauzer is the preferred Schnauzer size because it helps maintain the smaller size.   The hybrid may go by other names, often adding a Mini or Miniature to the name and interchanging the King with Cavalier.  In the United States, the American Canine Hybrid Club and the Dog Registry of America recognize the King Schnauzer whereas the Designer Dogs Kennel Club and the International Designer Canine Registry recognize the hybrid as well. Owners interested in learning the history of their King Schnauzer can review the histories of the parent breeds. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a companion in the toy group of Spaniels.  By the mid-1600s, the breed was well established in royal courts in England, France, and Italy.  The toy Spaniel was a particular favorite of King Charles the I and Charles the II, the grandson and great-grandson of Queen Mary of Scots.  The House of Stuart lent the name of both Charles the I and Charles the II to the dog.  The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was usurped by the Pugs as a court favorite in the following centuries and many Cavaliers were crossbred with the Pug to produce similar desired features.  A group of breeders in the 1900s set out to restore the Cavalier King Charles to its 17th Century looks and created a strict breed standard that is highly valued and guarded to this day. The Miniature Schnauzer is a German Terrier and a close relative to the Standard Schnauzer.  The miniature variety is a deviation from the standard and was originally bred as a small farm dog for vermin hunting.  The Miniature Schnauzer was first recorded in the late 1800s and continued to gain momentum as a separate breed until WWI, when dog breeding slowed in Europe and Germany.  However, after WW1, Miniature Schnauzers took off and the American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1926.

King Schnauzer Breed Appearance

The King Schnauzer is a small dog, standing no taller than 14 inches and weighing less than 20 pounds.  The head is in proportion to the body, and the ears are medium-sized with a flap.  The muzzle is medium in length, broad, and has a black nose with a scissor bite.  The King Schnauzer has straight legs and is more sturdy than the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the tail curves upward.  The coat most often resembles the Schnauzer in coloring and texture.  However, particolored coats will be softer.

King Schnauzer Breed Maintenance

The King Schnauzer is easy to groom and should be brushed two to three times a week to prevent any matting or knots.  Though the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is not considered a hypoallergenic breed, the King Schnauzer has hypoallergenic qualities and does not shed much.  Regular grooming will help remove any dead or loose hair as well as keep the coat clean.  The King Schnauzer has sensitive skin and should only have a bath when necessary.  Otherwise, water and shampoos may strip the natural oils from the skin and cause irritation.  The long hair on the ears and around the face also need special attention.  This hybrid is not known to drool and does not have dog odor.

King Schnauzer Temperament

The King Schnauzer has high energy and is very playful.  They are excellent family dogs and are very affectionate with children.  Their sturdy, agile bodies make them a good match for children of all ages, though older kids are ideal playmates.  The King Schnauzer has a cheerful personality and is curious but will raise the alarm on strangers and bark.  If they are socialized with other dogs and pets at early ages they will not have any problems in the home.  Their high energy levels and intelligence means they need daily mental and physical activity but this hybrid can be somewhat stubborn or independent-minded, which makes training a little more challenging.

King Schnauzer Activity Requirements

King Schanuzers, despite their small size, have high energy needs.  They need daily exercise and while they can get a lot of exercise indoors, a daily walk to two or a visit to the dog park is required to keep this hybrid in good physical and mental condition.  Walks outside will also help keep the King Schnauzer's mind stimulated and satisfied, which will help prevent destructive behaviors.  The King Schanuzer can adapt to any climate but temperate environments are ideal and a backyard for exercise is perfect.  As such, these dogs can adapt to apartment living but are far better in homes with yards and extra space to play.

He is very cuddly and is always cold. He can get a little temperamental and easily overwhelmed with strangers, though.

Buster is great dog, very friendly loves people. Stubborn and suspicious of anything new in the house. he has had some health issues, pancreatitis and a double cruciate ligament surgery. he loves treats but we do have to keep his weight in check as he is prone to getting tubby.

Animal Expert Question Icon
Question - Nutrition
Question

Is there a proper daily ratio between dry and wet food? Too much wet and we get very loose stools. Too much dry and we worry they are not getting enough nutrients. He poops every time he eats. She poops only once, sometimes twice a day. Our two King Schnauzers are 15 months old.

Answer
If you are feeding a complete dry diet, you can feed exclusively dry food. There is no issue whatsoever with this. Some add wet to increase moisture and palatability but this is not necessary. 1-2 poos a day is normal. Consider starting a sensitivity diet and some probiotics for the dog who poos frequently.
