The King Wheaten is a small dog with a king-size heart and playful disposition.  Borrowing the energy and soft coated waves of the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier and the size and devotion of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, this hybrid is a well-balanced, family-oriented dog.  The King Wheaten is also an excellent alarm barker.  Though documentation on the King Wheaten is limited, the parent breeds both share origins in the British and Irish Isles.  The King Wheaten's coat is soft and considering its size and love of a good lap, this affectionate dog is a pleasure to snuggle and pat.

King Wheaten Breed History

The King Wheaten is a crossbred hybrid at the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier.  The hybrid is not as well known as other purposefully crossbred mixes, and detailed accounts of the purposeful breeding of the two parents are not documented.  There are no set standards for the King Wheaten and dogs may vary.  Currently, only the Dog Registry of America and the International Designer Canine Registry recognize the hybrid, which also goes by the name Cavalier Wheaten.  Owners can review the respective histories of the parent breeds for additional insights. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a toy Spaniel with a royal history.  By the 16th Century, Spaniels were divided into two groups, the toy companions, and the field dogs.  Royal families favored the toy Spaniel in both England and France.  King Charles I and Charles the II were extremely fond of the companion dog, which draws its name from those royal relationships.  However, the breed's popularity fell after the death of Charles II and favored the flat-faced Pug.  Crossbreeding with Pugs resulted in the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel taking a different form to include a round head and short muzzle.  It was not until the 20th Century that breeders began restoring the former look of this breed and thankfully, some English breeders had maintained the original dogs.  The American Kennel Club accepted the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel as a breed in 1992.  This breed's late entry into the club is not accounted for by a lack of popularity but a desire to maintain the highest standard of breeding and fear that demand might adversely affect those high standards. The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is, as its name implies, of the Terrier family and first developed in Ireland.Originally bred as working dogs, their tails were docked to indicate the breed was tax-exempt.  As farm dogs, the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier was an excellent vermin hunter, and its size made it possible for the breed to assist in guarding the property against human or animal intruders.  The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier first arrived in the United States in Boston in 1946 and the American Kennel Club recognized the breed three decades later in 1973.

King Wheaten Breed Appearance

Despite the height and weight of the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier parent, the King Wheaten is a small dog and usually no taller than 16 inches at adulthood.  Its single coat is soft and silky with a slight wave to it.  The head is round with large, soulful eyes and tapered muzzle.  The muzzle is longer and thinner than the Cavalier King Charles parent.  The nose is medium and colors may range from light to dark.  The King Wheaten's ears are large and hang down with heavy feathering.  The body of the hybrid is well-boned and sturdy but not too heavy and the King Wheaten's tail is level with the body with a moderate feather, if not docked.

King Wheaten Breed Maintenance

The King Wheaten has an abundance of hair and requires brushing up to four times a week.  Brushing will help remove any loose or dead hair from the coat.  The King Wheaten does not shed much and may lean toward being a hypoallergenic dog.  Pin brushes and combs are effective on the soft waves and you should pay particular attention to the ears and legs, where the hair grows longer.  Brushing the coat will help remove dirt and will keep the King Wheaten looking its best.  This hybrid is prone to allergic dermatitis, so only bathe the King Wheaten when necessary and always use a hypoallergenic dog shampoo.  Both parent breeds may suffer from poor dentition, which may lead to tooth disease.  It is recommended to brush the King Wheaten's teeth at least three times a week.  Typically, the King Wheaten does not drool or have a doggy odor but keeping its coat, ears, and mouth clean will prevent odor.

King Wheaten Temperament

The King Wheaten is an energic, playful dog that loves the company of its family and retains puppy-like exuberance well into adulthood.  This hybrid is affectionate toward children but given its small size and high energy, it is better suited to older children.  The King Wheaten is not aloof with strangers and when properly socialized, shows affection toward new people.  However, the hybrid will bark to alert the family of an approaching stranger.  If socialized early, the King Wheaten lives in harmony with cats and other dogs but the Terrier qualities may turn the neighbor's cat into an enemy.  They have plenty of energy and enjoy jumping.  The King Wheaten's intelligence and eagerness to please also makes this hybrid easy to train.

King Wheaten Activity Requirements

The King Wheaten is an active dog with moderate levels of energy that loves to run and jump.  Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers are known for their exuberance and love for jumping in place but the mellow lap dog energies of the Cavalier King Charles will provide a good balance in the hybrid.  The King Wheaten does not have a high tolerance for weather extremes and prefers a temperate climate for its exercise needs.  However, given the size of this dog, most do very well with indoor exercise.  A backyard is ideal but if the King Wheaten can get all of its exercise needs met, apartment living is possible.
