The Labradinger is a hybrid dog. His parent breeds are the Labrador Retriever and the English Springer Spaniel. He is a happy, eager-to-please dog. He is most definitely a working dog, a trait he inherits from his parent breeds. He does need a family who is home often. The Labradinger tends to suffer from separation anxiety and should not be left alone for long periods of time. He might be a little tough to train; he can be a a bit headstrong at times. He is best suited for adults, not families with younger children.

Labradinger Breed History

The Labradinger is a relatively young breed. He is considered a designer dog; these hybrid dogs are the result of a trend in the 1980s in which people desired a smaller dog from a certain breed. In order to understand more about the Labradinger, it is a good idea to delve into the origins of his parent breeds. The Labrador Retriever hails from the Newfoundland area of Canada. He can trace his origins to the St. John's dog. It is thought that the St. John's dog was interbred with the Newfoundland dog and also with some local water dogs. The Lab was used as a fisherman's helper; he often retrieved fish that had somehow gotten off a fish hook or out of traps. The Lab found himself in England, and the Malmesbury family bred the dog to be a retriever while hunting. Eventually, the Lab made his way to the United States where he is one of the most popular breeds today. The English Springer Spaniel traces his roots to Europe, particularly Spain. It is thought that the Romans carried the dog to a number of countries. The Spaniel was used prior to the invention of the gun to retrieve small game during hunting. Even after the gun was invented, the English Springer Spaniel remained active on the hunt, flushing small game out for shooters. The English Springer Spaniel was brought to North America around 1913. Within ten years, the breed had become a member of the American Kennel Club.

Labradinger Breed Appearance

The Labradinger may be a variety of color combinations. He will usually have a thick, wavy coat. Depending on the dominant parent breed, the Labradinger may be yellow, black, chocolate or a combination of these colors. He may also have some of the spaniel markings. He will have long, floppy ears. He is generally smaller than the Labrador parent breed. Often, he is compared to a small Labrador with longer ears. Agile yet elegant, the Labradinger is an athletic looking breed.

Labradinger Breed Maintenance

The Labradinger may have a longer coat than his Labrador Retriever parent breed, but he is actually more low-maintenance than one may expect. He is more of a minimal shedding dog. He will need to be brushed only once a week. Bathe him only when necessary as his natural oils will help make his coat shiny and healthy-looking. He will need some extra maintenance where his ears are concerned. Use a damp washcloth to wipe his ears once a week. Be sure to look out for odor or redness as these are signs of an infection. Trim his nails every two weeks. A general rule of thumb is if you can hear your dog's nails on the floor, it is time to cut them. Brush your Labradinger's teeth at least three times a week; however, to prevent tooth decay, brush your dog's teeth daily.

Labradinger Temperament

The Labradinger is a friendly, happy dog. He is loyal and loving. However, he is not recommended for families with young children. English Springer Spaniels sometimes (though rarely) have a behavioral problem associated with rage, and this trait can turn up in hybrid offspring as well. He is best suited for older retired people or those who work at home. One way to combat the possibility of behavioral issues is to make sure you socialize the Labradinger as early as possible. This way your puppy learns at an early age what you expect of him and how to act in a variety of settings. The Labradinger is fairly easy to train; however, he can also be headstrong. Perhaps obedience classes or puppy kindergarten might be a good idea for your Labradinger. Overall, the Labradinger is a great dog and a loyal companion.

Labradinger Activity Requirements

The Labradinger is a dog who enjoys moderate activity. He will need daily activity. You may choose to take a brisk walk with the Labradinger, but keep in mind that the breed is highly intelligent. Games that stimulate his mind are great for the Labradinger. He would enjoy a trip to the dog park. He also enjoys games of catch. If you have a fenced-in yard, the Labradinger will enjoy using this space to burn off excess energy. Remember that he is part Labrador Retriever, a dog that loves to work. Sometimes a simple walk with you or a game of fetch is not enough to keep the Labradinger from getting into mischief. Games that involve agility or retrieving are stimulating to his mind as well as physically good for him.

We have two Labradingers from the same litter. They are happy, cheerful dogs with lots of energy and lots of affection. They are outside dogs and relish human companionship during the day. Fairly good watchdogs, and our biggest problem is their strong desire to dig holes to catch prey or to make a cool place to lie.
