Labrakita

Labrador Retriever
Akita

Labrakita hybrids are bred from a combination of the Akita Inu and Labrador Retriever. This is a large breed that is known for being a great family dog but is not patient enough to tolerate small children. They make excellent guard dogs because they are protective and do not trust strangers but they will need to be trained well so they do not attack guests or other animals. Socialization is important in the Labrakita to get along with other pets. They are a very intelligent breed that learns quickly and should be easy to train but may require a little extra patience at times.

Labrakita Breed History

Your Labrakita’s history will have to be determined by looking at the histories of the parent breeds. The Akita Inu originated in Japan in the 1600s from the Northern Spitz and was used mainly for hunting large game like bear, wild boar, deer, and elk. Some also used them in dog fighting until that sport was outlawed. Some say the breed was named for where it was first found in the Akita prefecture on the island of Honshu. Others believe they came from the snowy mountains and were called Snow Country Dogs before they became known as Akita Inus. In Japan, the Akita has been considered to be a national treasure since 1937 due to the loyalty of an Akita named Haichiko. This loyal dog would meet his owner at the train station after work every day and after the owner died, Haichiko continued to go to the train station every day to wait for him. There is now a statue in that train station in honor of Haichiko. Helen Keller was the first American to have an Akita when she got it as a gift from the Japanese government when she visited the country. The American Kennel Club finally noticed them about 40 years later when they were officially recognized in 1972. The Akita Inu is now the 46th most popular breed of dog in America. The Labrador Retriever originated in Canada when it was known as the St. John’s Water Dog for the capital city of Newfoundland where it was found in the 1800s. The breed later received its modern name after the Labrador Sea, where it was developed. They are excellent water retrievers and hunters, made popular by the second Earl of Malmesbury. They almost became extinct in the late 1800s because of strict laws and taxes in Newfoundland and were reinforced in England in 1903. They are the number one most popular breed of dog in the United States and has been registered with the American Kennel Club since 1917.

Labrakita Breed Appearance

The Labrakita can have either brown, hazel, or amber eyes and a black or brown nose. They have a long muzzle and intelligent expression and often look like they are smiling. Their ears are triangular and set up high on the head but may be floppy, depending on the parents. Their dense coat is short or medium length, straight, and can be black, gray, brown, red, cream, fawn, white, pied, or brindle. They may have a light or white mask and chest. The Labrakita has a large, square head and stocky body with muscular legs and their long tail may curve slightly over the back or curl all the way like the Akita Inu tail.

Labrakita Breed Maintenance

Your Labrakita is a clean dog that grooms herself like a cat but they still need to be brushed often. In fact, it is best to brush them with a pin brush or slicker brush several times a week but only bathe them when absolutely necessary since frequent shampooing can cause dry skin. Their toenails will need to be trimmed about once a month or whenever you can hear them clicking on the floor. Also, be sure to brush their teeth a few times a week to prevent dental problems. It is also recommended that you clean her ears every week and check for wax buildup, irritation, and ear mites.

Labrakitas can suffer from a variety of health issues. Secure pet health insurance today to avoid high veterinary care costs. Wag! Wellness lets pet parents compare insurance plans from leading companies like Figo and Spot. Find the “pawfect” plan for your pet in just a few clicks!

Labrakita Temperament

Your Labrakita should be a good family companion in a household with children but they need to be supervised well with small children. They do like other pets but need to be socialized young and may need to be supervised with cats due to their instinctive prey drive. The Labrakita is a fun-loving pet that needs a lot of play time and does best in a home with a family that has a large yard and lots of time. They need to be introduced to your guests so they will know to be friendly and should be fairly easy to train with patience.

Labrakita Activity Requirements

The Labrakita needs plenty of exercise to stay healthy and happy. These dogs do have the tendency to become overweight and anxious if they do not get enough exercise, so they need to get at least 60 to 90 minutes of vigorous activity every day. Some of their favorite exercises include playing at the dog park or hiking in the woods, swimming and playing at the beach, brisk walks or a run around the neighborhood a couple of times per day, and they are especially happy just to be outside chasing the local wildlife. If they do not get enough exercise, they may develop bad habits like chewing on things and destroying property.

Champ was the sweetest, most lovable dog I've ever known. He was 100 lbs of black and white fluff and wanted to be friends with everyone, unless you tried to come into the house or yard uninvited. Then he would let out this deep, bellowing bark that would make the lizard part of your brain tell you to run. We said goodbye to him last spring after he made it to 15 years old, pretty good for a 100 lb dog. He suffered from epilepsy and would have occasional seizures, but they were few (once every 2-3 years typically) and never lasted long. The Labrakita double-coat is probably the only downside of this breed. Champ would shed constantly and molt twice a year with the hair coming out in huge clumps all over the place. A local dog wash and some furminator shampoo are your friends with a Labrakita.

Archie was 4 month old and weighed 20kg when i rehoused him, he was rehoused due to previous owner not realising how big he would get, Within a day Archie was settled and loving his new home he is now 7 month old and now weighs 32 kg still lots of room to grow and is just an amazing dog, he loves to meet new people and dogs and loves children although smaller children have to supervise him as he likes to give cuddles and may knock them over but means no harm just don’t think he realises how big he is . We have had Archie 12 weeks now and needs a-lot of exercise to keep him calm in the house so has 3 good walks a day ,he loves to wrestle play with dogs and has many friends Archie would love to eat all day but we keep him to his routine this means mealtimes he-does not greed as he is a big puppy and don’t want him to end up greedy. As much as Archie likes to give cuddles he also like to be left to be a dog ,he loves to lie outside in the garden at night before bed and can be outside for hours he just loves the cold .can be bit hard in colder months when heating is on as it to much for him and he will take himself outside. when it snowed.,there was not much but Archie went round the full garden eating it and just loved his walks in the snow. all in all he is just so loving and beautiful natured dog who just wants to know he has a happy home

Zeus is a goofy, sweet, loving 78 lbs boy. He has brought us so much joy. We got him when he was 15 weeks old. We socialized him as a puppy with people and other dogs. He is still anxious around strangers so we need to be careful but overall he is a wonderful pet and a great addition to our family!

Alvin is a fun, loveable boy! He is extremely smart and such a quick learner. We have had Alvin since he has been 6 weeks old and have experienced many different “situations” that you would never expect to be an issue with a dog! 1. Ever since Alvin was a baby, we have had the hardest time finding him a food that he is interested in. Never in my wildest dreams would I ever think that a dog wouldn’t be excited to eat!!! Sometimes he will let his food sit there for days on end. We currently have him on Acana orijin..which from what I understand is a 5 star food...he could care less 🙄 which brings me too my next comment about his food. His vet gives cookies that are really a dental food 🤫 I believe it is called purina proplan veterinary diet formula DH. He absolutely LOVES this food. It’s very good for his teeth so we don’t have a problem adding it to his Acana, however, I have read that this is a vegatarian food so we would rather him have all of the nutritional value of Acan..this would be a nice idea if HE WOULD EAT IT!!! Is this a normal trait of labrikitas? Should we have him on a different food? The next “situation” that we have encountered is he and other male dogs do not get along very well. He doesn’t seem to be the one that initiates the disagreement in most circumstances. We have been socializing him since he has been very yong but seems to get along much better with female dogs. Alvin and his litter brother Simon (which my dad has) do not get along as well. Is this a normal thing with this breed? Along with other little quirks, such as clipping alvins nails(forget it) he is the most amazing dog. He is truly our best friend and there is nothing in this world that we wouldn’t do for him. We want to ensure that he is on the best food for his breed that he will enjoy and we want to make sure that once we have a child he will love the child just as much as we do. He is very happy and excited around children and forgets that he is twice their size!! Any advice or recommendations are greatly appreciated. We love him so much and will do anything and everything in this world to keep him healthy and happy ❤️

Lily does not like smaller dogs and is very protective of HER food. She needs to be brushed constantly and loves to be scratched behind her ears. Lily is a woman’s dog - loves to be with other females. She’s a kisser. Now that she’s older, Lily’s pads are bad - especially on her back paws. She has hip issues and her front joints also bother her. She has a broken tooth, but an excellent appetite!

Miracle is such a snuggle bug! She loves to go wherever we go, and she is fiercely protective. We didn't initially know that she was a labrakita, we were just told lab mix. We did not socialize her as a puppy like we should so she is not good with strangers or other dogs. We have 2 chihuahuas, 4 and 5 lbs and cannot leave them alone with her. Miracle is so smart and so loving. She just has to get to know new people. Once she knows you, shes a 65 lbs lap dog! She loves to snuggle and hates to be alone . We love her dearly, our family would not be complete without her. We did fail her by not socializing her more when she was a puppy. She is absolutely beautiful and so loving with people she knows.

Back is a very handsome, protective, and unwaveringly loyal companion. He is actually very lazy most of the time, but does love to go on hikes, swim, and play with other dogs. He is very friendly with people and dogs, As Long As, I am comfortable, safe, and accepting of the situation. The moment I become uncomfortable or he sees me in any danger, he becomes incredibly (almost overly so) protective. If people try to come inside my home while I am sleeping or outside the house, he will growl lowly and will not let them enter, either by pressing himself against the door or standing in the doorway in defense. He weighs maybe 80-85 lbs, and has a thick black coat that sheds constantly. I have to brush him often (every other day) to keep him from shedding all over my house. His ears lay like a black lab, but his tail is a curlie q like the Akita. I would recommend this dog breed to anyone who has time to properly socialize and train their dog, like any, but he really required me to dedicate my self and life to training him. Without proper training, I could see him being an overly aggressive dog.

Hades is black w/white spots, has beautiful amber eyes,a very thick black coat. As a pup he was going to be thrown away by a family who did not want him, wanting to leave him behind at the dump, luckily my dad saw him and told the family he would take him, though having many dogs,he brought him home, where he became mine, and my husbands furbaby. They missed out on an amazing bundle of joy. He is a very friendly, protective, lazy, glutonous, silly pup! He loves to run around outside with his dog friends, playing tug of war, as well as playing fetch and jumping in the kiddie pool (because of his thick fur, he gets hot easily). He is very loving with kids, and people in our family, he can be protective around others until we let him know its a safe space. He is very sensitive, fat, silly, and lazy! he can sleep for half of the day,but when it comes to meal time, he is a fatty that acts like a bottomless pit. He is also very smart, is easy to train when having the patience. But can be VERY emotional, if disciplined he acts like a child, but huffing sadly, or throwing a tantrum. Overall he is my spoiled furbaby though, we love him dearly and wouldn't trade him for the word.

Unbelievable dog. So incredibly mellow, Very easy to train due to her intellect, Loves people, Other pets, and kids. We call her the "90 Year old puppy" as she is so chill. We also call her "10 second dog" as her responses to commands are at 10 seconds...not immediate. It's fine though. She acknowledges you...and then does the command. Overall...GREAT dog
