The Labrasenji hybrid is a combination of a Basenji and a Labrador Retriever. Because the Basenji is a smaller sized dog and the Labrador Retriever is large, your Labrasenji can range in size from medium to large size. They have short, straight, dense fur that comes in several colors such as red, black, brown, and sable. Your Labrasenji can be a bit stubborn to train so you may need to spend some extra time working on this or you could try obedience classes. They like other pets and children but should be watched with younger children because they can be a bit rowdy when they play.

Labrasenji Breed History

Because your Labrasenji has not been around long, you have to refer to the histories of the parents to determine your Labrasenji’s characteristics. The Basenji originated in Central Africa in the ancient times but there are also records of similar dogs in Egypt during that time and were companions to the Pharaohs. The name, Basenji, means “bush thing” in the local Lingala language from the Congo. The Basenji yodels instead of barking and this is one of the characteristics that made it so popular when it was brought to the United States. They were originally brought over to hunt small game but Americans discovered what great companions they were and they became popular as family pets and were even placed in shows. It was eventually discovered that they were sighthounds rather than scenthounds and started competing in trials. The Basenji Club of America was started in 1942 and the breed was then accepted into the American Kennel Club the following year where they are the 88th most popular breed of dog. The Labrador Retriever is the number one most popular breed of dog in the United States and has been a member of the American Kennel Club since 1917. They were originally known as the Saint John’s Dog of Newfoundland, Canada back in the 1700s but were renamed after the Labrador Sea, where they were developed. These beautiful and friendly dogs liked to help the local fishermen pull in their catch from the sea and would retrieve any fish that got out of the net. The Earl of Malmesbury was one of the first owners of a Labrador Retriever and discovered how good they were at retrieving ducks and geese when he took his dog hunting with him. Soon, they were brought to the United States where they became known as the most lovable family pet in America.

Labrasenji Breed Appearance

The Labrasenji is a medium to large sized dog that can range from 30 to 70 pounds and stands about 22 inches tall when full grown. They have a short, thick coat that is usually bicolored black, brown, red, cream, fawn, pied, brindle, or any combination of these. Their large eyes can be brown, hazel, or amber and their nose is either brown or black. Because the Basenji is a lighter and smaller dog and the Labrador Retriever is heavy and more solid, the Labrasenji body type can vary quite a bit but they usually have a rectangular head, long legs, pointed ears, and a long, curved tail.

Labrasenji Breed Maintenance

The Labrasenji is easy to care for and you should only need to brush them with a rubber curry or slicker brush once or twice a week. They may need to be bathed if they get especially dirty but not too often as it can dry out your dog’s skin. Their ears should be cleaned regularly with a moist cotton ball to prevent ear infections and watch for signs of irritation or redness. Brush your dog’s teeth once or twice a week with a special dog toothpaste to prevent tooth decay. Also, clip their toenails about once every six to eight weeks or when needed.

Labrasenjis often suffer from elbow dysplasia, cataracts, and other health conditions. Secure pet health insurance today to avoid high veterinary care costs. Our pet insurance tool lets you compare plans from leading companies like Figo and Spot. Find the “pawfect” plan for your pet in just a few clicks!

Labrasenji Temperament

The Basenji is more catlike than dog and is an affectionate and lovable pet like the Labrador Retriever, so your Labrasenji will be a wonderful family companion for anyone. They can be stubborn though, so training them may take some extra patience. If you are firm and use positive reinforcement, your Labrasenji should be able to learn what you want to teach them. The Basenji does not bark, but yodels, so your Labrasenji may be a barker or a yodeler. Although they enjoy playing with children and other pets, they do best with older children and need to be supervised with children under five.

Labrasenji Activity Requirements

Both the Basenji and the Labrador Retriever are good hunters and love to chase rabbits and squirrels so be sure to put your dog on a leash when she is not in a fenced yard or enclosure. Your Labrasenji needs between 60 and 90 minutes of vigorous activity every day to stay healthy and happy. When your dog does not get the required exercise daily, they can become bored and may develop behavioral issues. They enjoy taking a brisk walk, running or jogging, hiking, swimming, playing with other dogs at the dog park, and are great at agility and obedience training.

I adopted Jazzy from a shelter 14 years ago. She has been amazing every single day. Her and I connected instantly. I was going there specifically for her so maybe she felt that. She has been a wonderful companion for all these years. High energy when she was young but only when it was time to go outside. Indoors she was always calm and only play when prompted. That never stopped her from putting her favorite rope in your hands and ask to play tug of war though lol. As she ages her health never really waivers. Regular vet visits are good but honestly we haven't gone a ton. We've gone a few times in the last few years but nothing really major. These days Jazzy loves to just eat, sleep, cuddle, and watch TV. She has been amazing. If you're thinking about a Labrasenji you will have the best friend you could ever imagine. Great dog for any environment (at least in my experience), and full of affection, and very obedient.

Our boy Indie is high energy and VERY snuggly. He thinks he’s a lap dog and he loves walks, backyard games, and playing with our young kids - ages 3y and 1y. He chases our cat, but is never aggressive and has never harmed. They are slowly calming down around each other. Both are rescues, and we had the cat first. Our labrasenji is a sweet one and we are so happy he joined our family.

Blessed to have rescued him from the animal shelter. He was due to be euthanized soon because he was one of the four dogs that remained un-adopted during the "clear the shelter" day. We adopted him at 6 months old. He seemed very afraid and nervous at first so we visited with him while I was deciding on whether or not to adopt him just to see if he would be compatible with our Family. We decided to take a chance. While we waiting for him to be neutered we began preparing for his arrival. It took Duke quite awhile to come out of his shell and stop being nervous of his new surroundings. As the days grew the more he, Duke, grew more and more fond of my youngest Son, Jaxx-Aiden♥... Since then, they have both become inseparable companions! That I absolutely love!!! It seems to me that we adopted our Duke at the most perfect time! We are so happy and feel extremely blessed to have our new Family member with Us!!! He has been such a good boy and has become so loving and obedient. He was a perfect fit for our Family♥♥♥... .

He's my best friend and an amazing watch dog. Lots of energy but never destructive. Loves to wrestle and bite. He is a barker and a yodeler, so he is fun to talk to. Hates being brushed with a passion!

We got her at 16-20 weeks and we've had her about 11 years. She is terrible on a leash, but is fantastic off-leash and responds well to vocal input from me. I call her my "velcro dog" because she stays with me 100% and is always near me.

I would recommend a Labrasenji dog, because they are high-energy, playful dogs who are also very affectionate. They are also good with kids, except when very excited can be a little rough when playing. This is the perfect dog for you if you love swimming, running, and hiking because this breed of dogs love it too. They will even run next to you while you are riding on a bike.

Kernel is super smart. He Loves going to doggy daycare playing with other dogs. He's stubborn and sighs when he can't have his way. Super friendly and never meets a stranger. I signed us up for leash training so pray for me
