The Mini English Cocker dog is a mix between two breeds, the Dachshund and the English Cocker Spaniel. The result is a good-looking dog that is affectionate and loving but has a streak of stubbornness - much like her two parent dogs! They are average in regards to activity level, but are born hunters so may chase smaller animals and birds, or take off on the trial of some interesting smell. The Mini English Cocker Dog can range from small to medium in size, depending on the genetics it inherits from its two different parent breeds. They tend to have a dainty face and pointed muzzle with long floppy ears. Their coat is usually soft and has feathering around the legs and ears. The Mini English Cocker is a dog that loves to be with her humans, they pine if left alone for long stretches of time. These smart, intelligent and loving dogs make good family pets but there is a caviate - they may nip or growl with rough handling.

Mini English Cocker Breed History

Looking at the parent history, the Dachshund originated in Germany where he was used to hunt badgers, foxes and wild boar back in the 16th Century. These dogs varied in size, being bred to match whatever it was they were hunting. Originally known as the Teckel in Germany, the breed was refined by German foresters from the 18th to the 19th centuries. These dogs were fearless hunters, and entered the burrows of prey. Other breeds have contributed to the Dachshunds development, the smooth hair variety from cross breeding with the French Braque and Basset Hounds and the long-coated Dachshund, created from various spaniels and terriers. It is the only dog that is recognised by the American Kennel Club that hunts above and below ground. The breed became popular in the early 1900s but fell on hard times during World War 1 due to the German connection. But they rose to become popular again in the 1950s. Today they rank 6th in popularity out of 155 breeds recognised by the AKC. Spaniels have a long history and can be rated either as land or water spaniels. Known for their hunting and retrieving skills on land and water, they varied in size and weight.  It was only towards the end of the 19th century that breeders began dividing them into specific breeds. All spaniels that were less than 25 pounds were classified as the Cocker Spaniel. But disputes among breeders cause a reclassification to create standard breeds for each spaniel type. American breeders were more interested in a smaller dog and bred accordingly, while the English preferred a bigger dog. In 1936 a special classification was deemed to be the English Cocker Spaniel to separate it from its smaller American cousin. The English Cocker Spaniel had finally found its place in the dog breeding history.

Mini English Cocker Breed Appearance

The Mini English Cocker can vary in its appearance depending on what parent genetics are more dominant. Even puppies in the same litter can vary, some looking more like the English Cocker Spaniel with the soft wavy coat complete with feathering on the ears, tail and legs. Other pups may take after the Dachshund - looking sleeker, longer and with straight or wiry coats. It is purely the luck of the draw as to what the pups will look like but one thing is certain and that it its soulful eyes, small robust body and their affectionate nature are endearing. Short legs with well rounded paws, a rounded head with a slightly pointed muzzle and long floppy ears are the hall mark of the Mini English Cocker dog. A longish tail held at mid height which may be fluffy or smooth, and dark eyes and nose plus a combination of colors (often bi colored) provide plenty of appealing features.

Mini English Cocker Breed Maintenance

The Mini English Cocker is of medium maintenance, requiring brushing twice a week to rid any shedding hair and to prevent matting. They are not great shedders, but a good brushing will keep the coat gleaming and looking its best. Because they have floppy ears, be sure to check to see whether there is any dirt building up and if so, wipe gently with a damp cloth to clear it. Never push anything into the ear canal as it may damage your dogs hearing. Inflammation can start in the warm moist environment in the ear, so it is good to include this maintenance as a regular task. Brushing your dogs teeth will enable good hygiene and prevent doggy breath, and will keep the teeth strong and healthy. As to bathing, they only require it if they have rolled in the mud or something a bit smelly. Use a mild dog shampoo to protect their coats and their skin.

Mini English Cocker Temperament

Cute and adorable, but also clever and intelligent, the Mini English Cocker also has a stubborn streak that can be overcome with patience and kindness. These dogs love being with their family and are definitely indoor dogs. Although they love exploring outdoors, they crave human contact. Early socialising with people and other dogs  will enable them grow to become a well rounded dog with a pleasing personality. Usually they are calm and quiet dogs, which makes them ideal for a family pet. They do have strong hunting instincts  - a gift from their parent breeds - and may be prone to chase anything that runs from them, so the use of a leash is important when out and about. Training and early socialisation will overcome this especially if they are bought up with other pets. They enjoy games that challenge them mentally, and are happy dogs who love nothing more than to snuggle up with you and the family. The Mini English Cocker can be entertaining and funny, or quiet and somber. While they may inherit their ancestors lively couragous nature fearing nothing at all, in general the mixed breed tempers this trait and they are described as a dog with a mellow disposition.

Mini English Cocker Activity Requirements

The Mini English Cocker has moderate exercise needs, making him an ideal dog for apartment living, and the fact that they are not barkers is a bonus. A walk around the neighbourhood, or an hour or two at the dog park will burn off their energy and engage their curious nature. Some days they will just want to remain at your side, enjoying the attention they recieve. Other days they will disappear after an interesting scent, so if you are in an unfenced area a leash is adviseable. They will happily walk or trot beside you on your daily outing, or sit and contemplate life as you sip a latte. At home they are more interested in cuddling up with the family and enjoy as much petting and attention as you can lavish on them.
