You won’t find a more lovable hybrid out there. Well adapted Mini Foxie Doxies brim with energy and affection. On the flip side, they can be a bit territorial and protective of people and belongings. Nonetheless, dog owners often fall in love with this breed’s opinionated character. Mini Foxie Doxies live up to 14 years, weigh between 7 and 16 pounds, and grow to be between 8 and 11 inches tall. They look like a Dachshund, but with longer legs and less exaggerated features. It is believed Mini Foxie Doxies have been bred for about a century; however, they are not yet recognized by the American Kennel Club roster of purebred dogs.

Mini Foxie Doxie Breed History

The Mini Foxillon get its name from its parent breeds: the Toy Fox Terrier and the Dachshund or “Doxie”. With ancestors like the Chihuahua and the Toy Manchester Terrier, the Toy Fox Terrier was once a perky circus dog, entertaining many with his energy and agility. Originally bred as a hunter of vermin, this talented and courageous canine excelled at his trade. He was first registered with the United Kennel Club in 1936. Still using his innate talents today, the Toy Fox Terrier loves to compete and is a pro in Earth Dog trials where he hunts and digs as he has always loved to do. He is now on the roster of the American Kennel Club; he was accepted to the list in 2003.  The other parent, the Dachshund, originated in Germany and dates back to the 15th century. This breed was developed to be a fearless badger and small vermin hunter. In fact, the name Dachshund means “badger dog” in German. There are several Dachshund varieties; the “smooth-haired” variety came first and was a result of breeding several hunting dogs including the Pinscher and Basset Hound. The “wire-haired” and “long-haired” Dachshund came later by mixing in Spaniels and other Terrier breeds. Beginning in the 1800s, Dachshunds started being bred as a companion dog throughout Europe because of their loyalty and amusing personalities. Their popularity eventually became widespread across Europe and North America and breeders began to create “miniature” versions that weighed under 11 pounds. Dachshunds were recognized by the AKC in 1895, but suffered a dip in popularity because of their association with Germany during World War I and II. They rebounded, however, and are now one of the most popular family dogs in the United States and Europe, especially the United Kingdom. The Mini Foxie Doxie is not recognized by the AKC, but it is fairly established and thought to have originated in the early 1900s when both parent breeds were present and popular in the United States. They were likely bred for their spunky personalities, adorable faces, and convenient size. Still, Mini Foxie Doxies can vary widely in temperament and appearance and breeders should be thoroughly researched if you are considering purchasing a puppy from them.

Mini Foxie Doxie Breed Appearance

Mini Foxie Doxies look like a taller Dachshund with less exaggerated features. They typically weigh between 10 and 20 pounds and grow to be between 8 and 11 inches tall. If the Toy Fox Terrier is bred with a Miniature Dachshund as opposed to a Standard Dachshund, the result will look similar but be smaller in height and weight. Mini Foxie Doxies are known for their sweet, puppy-like faces; they have round, curious eyes and a daintily tapered muzzle that ends in a black, brown or occasionally Isabella nose. This breed comes in many color combinations and patterns. Some of the most common colors include black, white, tan, brown, cream, red, and blue. Some may even take on sable, brindle, or dapple patters. A Mini Foxie Doxie’s coat can also vary widely depending if it is a result of a smooth, long-haired, or wire-haired Dachshund parent. The smooth haired is the most popular and results in a fine, short, and straight coat.

Mini Foxie Doxie Breed Maintenance

Mini Foxie Doxies are not a hypoallergenic breed and thus are not suitable for pet owners with allergies. Their coats shed moderately and vary in length and texture depending on whether the Dachshund parent is smooth, long-haired, or wire-haired. Mini Foxie Doxies with longer coats may require grooming with a shedding blade or slicker brush. This breed also requires a monthly bath in which the ears and eyes should be cleaned meticulously. They should also have their nails clipped once or twice a month. Like all breeds, Mini Foxie Doxies should also have their teeth cleaned daily to avoid plaque buildup and other dental diseases.

Mini Foxie Doxie Temperament

Mini Foxie Doxies are known as loyal and affectionate family companions. They are alert, intelligent, and playful animals that require quite a bit of attention. They enjoy learning tricks, playing games such as fetch with their owners and messing around with chew toys of all kinds. Terriers are known to be protective and vocal dogs and the Mini Foxie Doxie is no exception – he will guard his people and belongings vigorously. Owners may want to introduce their Mini Foxie Doxie to strangers and other dogs cautiously. If Mini Foxie Doxies are not socialized properly or neglected, then they can become aggressive or destructive. Additionally, these dogs can be stubborn, difficult to train, and may require obedience school. Nonetheless, a well-adapted and well-trained Mini Foxie Doxie will be the happiest and most affectionate pet a dog owner could have. Overall, these spunky pets thrive in environments where they receive diligent training, socialization, and affection from their owners.

Mini Foxie Doxie Activity Requirements

The Mini Foxie Doxie is an athletic breed that requires moderate exercise amounting to 30 to 45 minutes of daily activity. They may enjoy a moderate walk or trip to the dog park (depending on the temperament). They are fast and agile runners with a very high tendency to wander and go after small animals, so owners should not leave Mini Foxie Doxies unattended when outside or in unfenced areas. These pups also love toys, particularly balls, and are happy to play indoors with their owners. Otherwise, Mini Foxie Doxies do well in all types of climates and environments. Given their size, they are particularly suited for urban and/or apartment living so long as they get enough attention from their owners. In fact, Mini Foxie Doxies are happiest when they get a healthy dose of daily snuggling in addition to exercise.

She is adorable and people always think she's a puppy, even though she's 2 years old. She does not like letting anyone in the house and barks and tries to bite their legs. With her family, she is loving and affectionate. If we are having company, we meet them outside with her and that seems to help with the territorial behavior.
