Mini Foxy Rat Terrier Breed History

Designer dogs are part of a fairly new trend that began a few decades ago. There is often not much documented on these dogs, and because of this we have to turn to the information that is available on the parent breeds in order to make an accurate guess on what the babies will look and act like. The Mini Foxy Rat Terrier is the result of breeding between an American Rat Terrier and a Mini Fox Terrier. The first parent breed was actually named by Teddy Roosevelt and originates from Great Britain. The first of the American Rat Terriers were made in 1820 by crossing a Smooth Fox Terrier and a Manchester Terrier. It was in the 1890s that the breed first made an appearance in the United States, when the only available color combinations were black and tan. Eventually, the American breeders mixed these dogs again with Smooth Fox Terriers, Beagles and Whippets. The new breeds that were introduced brought new traits and colors to the dog. The Beagle added hunting and trailing skills, made the dogs bulkier and gave access to the red color gene. The blue and brindle colors were available thanks to the Whippet, along with an increased speed and agility. Mini Fox Terriers have been found in Australia since the 1800s. The ancestors of these dogs are the Smooth Fox Terrier and the Manchester Terrier, which were both brought to Australia by early settlers, although they were originally from England. The Whippet, English Toy Terrier and Italian Greyhound were added to the ancestry, which gave these dogs their fast and light characteristics.

Mini Foxy Rat Terrier Breed Appearance

To determine what your Mini Foxy Rat Terrier puppy will look like, you must take a look at the parents. American Rat Terriers are strong and muscled dogs that have deep chests and solid necks. The legs are powerful and the shoulders are strong. Although the bodies are small and compact, they are thick and solid. These dogs will have ears that are tipped or upright and will become erect when the dog is on alert. The tails will either be long or short naturally, although some long tails get docked. Miniature Fox Terriers are small and agile dogs with sweet faces. They have noble heads with erect ears that either fold slightly at the tips or stand straight up. They have oval shaped feet that are very distinctive and articulate. The tails of this breed as well can be left natural or docked, although some dogs are born with natural bobtails.

Mini Foxy Rat Terrier Breed Maintenance

Coat care for hybrid dogs will depend on which parent they inherit their coats from. In the case of the Mini Foxy Rat Terrier, the coat care should be fairly easy and very straight forward. They will only need to be brushed occasionally using a brush and a comb, and do not require regular baths unless they are dirty. Clean your Mini Foxy Rat Terrier’s ears weekly using a damp cloth. This will reduce the risk of unwanted ear infections. Your dog’s teeth will need to be maintained as well to avoid tooth decay and gum disease. Brush their teeth every day if you can, or at least two or three times per week. Lastly, your pet will require monthly nail trimming. Although the exact frequency will vary between dogs since some have more active lifestyles and wear down their nails more often, once or twice per month should be enough for most breeds.

Mini Foxy Rat Terrier Temperament

For the appearance of these dogs, we looked at the characteristics of both parents, and the same will go for personality. American Rat Terriers are smart and alert and also very loving. They love to learn and yearn to please their owners, which makes them easy to train. This breed is lively and feisty, and are great pets for active owners. This friendly dog is well behaved around kids, especially if they are raised with them. They are also known to be good with strangers, for the most part, but still make great watchdogs. The loyal and fearless Mini Fox Terrier may seem sweet and quiet at first, which they are, but at the first sign of danger they become the perfect protective watchdog. They are well suited to households with children, as long as the young ones understand how to treat a dog. Other pets are no problem for the Mini Fox Terrier, although small pets like rodents and reptiles should beware, as these dogs were bred for hunting.

Mini Foxy Rat Terrier Activity Requirements

The Mini Foxy Rat Terrier will enjoy similar activities to those of the parents. Most of these hybrid dogs will enjoy swimming, running and playing constantly with their owners. They will love to play inside and outside the house and should be given mind games in order to keep them occupied and exercise all senses. A dog with moderate exercise needs, 30 to 40 minutes per day may suffice. Chances are though, if the opportunity rises, this dog will be ready to go outside and explore every chance he gets.
