The Mini King Schnauzer is a hybrid breed of the purebred Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Miniature Schnauzer.  Both parent breeds are loving and devoted, and the resulting hybrid, though sometimes strong-willed, is an excellent companion.  The Mini King Schnauzer is recognized by four dog registries and competitive organizations and is a popular hybrid choice.  Hybrid names are not standardized, but most registries recognize the mix as the Mini King Schnauzer, but the hybrid may also go by the Mini Cavalier Schnauzer.

Mini King Schnauzer Breed History

The Mini King Schnauzer is a recent hybridization between the Miniature Schnauzer and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel so this dog does not have a detailed history nor does this mix have set standards.  Owners wishing to understand better the possible origins of their Mini King Schnauzer can review the parent breeds for their histories and character traits. The Miniature Schnauzer is a German Terrier with a sweet disposition but a serious "old man" look.  The breed developed in the 19th Century as a smaller version of the Standard Schnauzer whose role was that of ratter and vermin control on German farms.  Several smaller dogs were used to reduce the size of the Miniature Schnauzer including the Pomeranian, the Affenpinscher, and Miniature Pinscher.  However, the exact lineage of the Miniature Schnauzer is not absolutely known because detailed records were not kept.  The Miniature Schnauzer enjoyed early popularity, but the breed slowed down during World War I and II.  Following the Second World War, popularity increased significantly, and the Miniature Schnauzer enjoys a top twenty ranking in the American Kennel Club.  The AKC first recognized the Miniature Schnauzer in 1926. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a long history as a favorite Toy Spaniel companion in European courts, particularly in the English court.  During the 17th Century, the breed became the recognized favorites of the House of Stuart and both King Charles I and the Charles the II kept the dogs.  Unfortunately, by the 18th Century trade routes from China introduced Pugs and the flat-faced canines usurped the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel at court.  Cavaliers were crossbred with Pugs for their desired round head and prominent eyes, and the Cavalier as he was through the 16th Century almost faded.  Fortunately, fanciers in the 20th Century worked diligently to search for specimens, as well as restore the original Cavalier standards.  Today, the Cavalier standards are highly regarded.

Mini King Schnauzer Breed Appearance

The Mini King Schnauzer is a small dog not weighing more than 20 pounds.  The head is in proportion with the body and medium-sized ears have a flap.  Most Mini King Schnauzer have Schnauzer-like faces with beards and moustaches.  Their build is stock and square in appearance, and their coats range from soft and wavy to wiry depending on which parent breed they most resemble.  They may have Schnauzer appearances with Cavalier coat markings of white and red masks, and the Mini King Schnauzer's tail is medium in length with no great plumage or thick brush.

Mini King Schnauzer Breed Maintenance

The Mini King Schnauzer may have some hypoallergenic qualities thanks to the Miniature Schnauzer parent, and will not shed much.  Despite how little they shed, the Mini King Schnauzer needs frequent grooming with a bristle or pin brush to keep its coat looking and smelling its best.  The Mini King Schnauzer may develop skin allergies, but grooming will help remove potential allergens as well as distribute natural oils on the skin.  Brush your Mini King Schnauzer a few times per week and pay close attention to the long hair around the face and legs.  Professional grooming to cut he hair is suggested if owners don't feel comfortable using clippers.  Check the Mini King Schnauzer's ears for build-up or debris while grooming.  The long hair around the ears may trap dirt and moisture inside the ears.

Mini King Schnauzer Temperament

The Mini King Schnauzer is a curious and alert hybrid that is also an excellent alarm barker.  They are devoted and loving toward their families but may vary in solitary tolerance depending on which parent breed the Mini King Cavalier most resembles.  Mini King Schnauzer also differ in their tolerance of other dogs and small pets.  Owners should socialize their dogs early and often to help them adjust to living with other pets.  The Mini King Schnauzer can be independent-minded but is always eager to please, so training is not difficult.  They have enough energy and stoutness to be an excellent playmate for children and this hybrid is affectionate towards kids.  While they may raise the alarm on a stranger, their natural curiosity and affectionate hearts allow them to warm up to strangers.

Mini King Schnauzer Activity Requirements

The Mini King Schnauzer is an active dog with medium energy and a sharp mind that also needs daily exercise.  A house with a secure yard is preferable since this hybrid does need daily outdoor activities.  However, on-the-leash walks and off-the-leash playtime at secured dog parks may be a good substitute for no yards.  The Mini King Schnauzer can adapt well to apartment living as long as it gets its daily exercise.  Their high intelligence and vermin hunting lineage demand daily mental stimulation or the Mini King Schnauzer may develop destructive behaviors.

I got a mini king schnauzer for my grandparents for their 53rd wedding anniversary. They absolutely adore her. She is very active but also loves to sleep. The number one issue they run into with her is her high-shrill bark. This bark is triggered by anything outside that moves. She loves to play with other dogs, and has so much affection toward everyone she meets!

I adopted my Female Mini King Schnauzer at 9 weeks old so that my 3 1/2 year old Male Minature Schnauzer would have a playmate. I've had her a week and it's going very well so far. She is picking up on housebreaking very quickly.

I lost both my husband and my beloved cocker spaniel within weeks of each other. I decided I wanted a Cavalier, but I found a Mini King. She is a perfect companion, very affectionate and quick to learn voice and hand commands.
