The Miniature Pinschelkhound is a rare hybrid dog resulting from cross breeding the Miniature Pinscher with the Norwegian Elkhound. Size and height can vary considerable depending on the genetic input of each parent, so they can be a small to medium dog in height. Proud and courageous, this new breed makes an ideal companion dog and is protective of their family. They can be quite stubborn or headstrong so it is important that the owner is the pack leader, not the Miniature Pinschelkhound! These dogs make for good guard dogs as they are alert and will warn you immediately about intruders. They are agile and respond well to training, as long as training is interesting and you provide positive response to their efforts and a reward or two. Generally, they are affectionate and kind with children and other pets if they have be socialised well as puppies.

Miniature Pinschelkhound Breed History

Let’s examine the parent dog breeds to see what characteristics may influence your Miniature Pinschelkhound. Starting with the Miniature Pinscher, it dates back several hundred years where it was used extensively in Germany to rid vermin from homes and stables. While it looks like a Doberman, it was not developed from it. The Miniature Pinscher (Min Pin) is a separate breed and is much older than the Doberman. In 1895 breeders formed the Pinscher Klub where the first written standard for the breed was drawn up. The Stuttgart Dog Show in 1900 saw the first of the Min Pin on display causing the breed popularity to soar. Thereafter WW I breeders worked diligently to improve the breed and it was in 1919 that the first Min Pins were imported into the United States. This small dog gained popularity as people loved their elegant looks and unlimited energy. The Miniature Pinscher Club of America was formed in 1929 and the breed gained recognition by the American Kennel Club. The rather glamorous Norwegian Elkhounds heritage can be traced back over a thousand years or more, and history notes that the Vikings used them to hunt and as guard dogs. Truly an ancient and noble breed, they are entwined in the Norwegian culture. These dogs are suited to the rugged lands with their impressive thick coat and wolf like face. Brave beyond belief, these dogs were used to hunt large game such as bear and moose. They would track the animal and corner them, holding them at bay until the hunter caught up. These dogs first appeared in dog shows in 1877, and afterwards breeders created a breed standard. Today, the Norwegian Elkhound excels in dog sports including agility, obedience, herding, guarding as well as search and rescue. But mostly they make a wonderful family companions.

Miniature Pinschelkhound Breed Appearance

The appearance of the Miniature Pinschelkhound can vary in looks and size considerably, depending on the strength of the parent genetics. They often take after one parent more than the other. They may have the dense thick coat and wolf like face of the Nowegian Elkhound, or they many look elegant and athletic, exhibiting the black and tan color combination and short coat of the Miniature Pinscher. The face is often very expressive, with large round eyes, pricked up ears, and a long pointed muzzle with teeth meeting in a scissors bite. A well proportioned body supported by strong legs is a feature, as is the tail that can be fluffy and curled over the back, or it may be straight and held high. The Miniature Pinschelkhound can often look like a small Norwegian Elkhound or a large Miniature Pinscher. But whatever the size, the grace and beauty of this dog is hard to ignore.

Miniature Pinschelkhound Breed Maintenance

The maintenance of your Miniature Pinschelkhound may vary depending on the coat the dog inherits. If the coat is short and close like the Miniature Pinscher parents, then it will only require a weekly brush, an occasional bath and it will be ready to go. However, if it inherits the dense thick coat from the parent Norwegian Elkhound, then it will require frequent brushing, often requiring attention on a daily basis to prevent matting. Regardless of the type of coat, always use a special dog preparation for bathing; a mild dog shampoo is advisable. Other areas to check are the ears to ensure they are clean, the eye area, and the toe nails to see if they need a quick clip. Brushing of your dogs teeth is an important part of your pet maintenance, it will keep the teeth healthy and the oral hygiene standards high.

Miniature Pinschelkhound Temperament

While temperament does vary between dogs of the same breed, the Miniature Pinschelkhound is generally a proud dog, loyal yet spirited, and can be an independent thinker - meaning they can be a bit stubborn. But on the other side they are affectionate, devoted and protective of their human family. While these dogs are highly intelligent, they can be a bit headstrong and need a firm hand in training. They can be barkers which may be able to be trained out of them, but keep that in mind if you are an apartment dweller.This dog does respond best to an owner who is the pack leader, one who is fair, but firm. Letting this dog be the boss is detrimental to the dog and the relationship it will have with the family. The Miniature Pinschelkhound is a dog with a sense of humor, they love to play, and they love to cuddle. These dogs are also very empathetic - they know if you are sad and will respond by cuddling close and putting their head on your lap to comfort you. Attractive in appearance and nature, these dogs can challenge the inexperienced owner but are well worth the effort for a pet that has a ton of character and who will fit right in with the family

Miniature Pinschelkhound Activity Requirements

The Miniature Pinschelkhound does require daily exercise in the form of a walk or free play. They will happily lope alongside you as you run, or join you on a walk around the town. This will help to socialise your dog and allow him to grow into a well rounded dog with good manners. If they have inherited the dense coat of the Norwegian Elkhound, they may find hot temperatures hard to bear. Make sure you don't over exercise them during the full heat of the day. The miniature Pinschelkhound will love a yard (and beyond) to explore, and can be quite an escape artist so ensure that your fencing is very secure. These dogs love games but do have an independent streak so you may not always get the ball back and will have to chase them for it!
