Miniature Schnauzer

Zwergschnauzer

The Miniature Schnauzer is the smallest and most popular of the Schnauzers.  Originally developed in Germany in the 1800s as a ratting and small farm dog, the Miniature Schnauzer has gained considerable popularity as a companion dog.  The Miniature Schnauzer is said to have derived from the crossbreeding of smaller Standard Schnauzers with Affenpinschers and Poodles to develop a smaller Schnauzer. An affectionate, vocal canine, this breed will make a great addition to a family who likes to keep busy. Moderately intense exercise is a must to keep this pup content; socialization is necessary, as is keeping small animals out of his reach. A natural hunter, inquisitive and spritely, the Miniature Schnauzer is ready for action at all times.

Miniature Schnauzer Breed History

Bred in Germany in the mid-1800s, this breed was brought to the United States in 1924 and officially recognized by the American Kennel Club only two years later in 1926.

The Miniature Schnauzer's popularity took off after WWI, and the breed had even risen to the third most popular breed in the United States at one point.

In America, the Miniature Schnauzer was once recognized as the Wirehaired Pinscher, and still remains in the small Terrier group, despite being closely related to the Standard Schnauzer of the utility group.

The German word schnauzer means "small beard", a fitting description for the Mini's majestic mane. The Schnauzer has also changed coat colors over the two centuries of its history. Once considered a dog of colorful variety, the Miniature Schnauzer now comes in black, black and silver, and salt and pepper.

Miniature Schnauzer Breed Appearance

The Miniature Schnauzer is a double-coated breed featuring an all-black coat or two toned black and silver or salt and pepper. Longer hair grows along the face, neck, ears, chest, and tail, giving this breed a distinguished appearance.

Face and head

The Miniature Schnauzer has small dark oval-shaped eyes set deeply, and ears set high on the head, which can be cropped or uncropped. The head is rectangular-shaped and strong with a muzzle in proportion to the head.

The muzzle has a blunt ending, and thick whiskers adorn the Miniature Schnauzer’s face.

Legs, tail, and gait

The Miniature Schnauzer’s forelegs are straight and parallel as viewed from all angles and end in short round feet with catlike toes and thick black pads.

The hind legs are well-muscled with slanting thighs that are set below the level of the shoulders.  The tail is set high and carried erect. A lot of Minis have docked tails, but while this is a common practice, it's also inhumane and painful for dogs.

Miniature Schnauzer Breed Maintenance

Brushing

Maintaining a Miniature Schnauzer’s coat is slightly more work than other breeds and requires brushing two to three times a week. The undercoat does its job to capture the loose hair and dander, making this breed less likely to trigger pet allergies in people.

Professional grooming

Pamper your Mini every 6 to 8 weeks with a professional grooming sesh to keep them looking (and smelling!) their best. Prefur in-home grooming? Book a Grooming service through the Wag! app instead!

Ear and dental care

While grooming, the Miniature Schnauzer’s ears should be checked and cleared of debris.  Ear cleaning will help keep the Miniature Schnauzer health as well as prevent “doggy” odors from developing.

After checking his ears, brush through the long hair of his arms and chest to prevent or work out any matting.  As with other breeds, brushing the Miniature Schnauzer’s teeth will keep them healthy and free of dental disease.

Ideal living arrangements

The Miniature Schnauzer is an all-weather dog and tolerates both hot or cold climates.  This breed also does well in an apartment or with urban living though the Miniature Schnauzer does require moderately intense exercise.

Feeding

When it comes to feeding the Miniature Schnauzer, this is a relatively small dog who needs between ½ and 1 cup of dry food divided into two meals daily. The ideal amount of food for your Mini will depend on their age, activity levels, and overall health.

Miniature Schnauzer Temperament

The Miniature Schnauzer may have been intended as a ratting dog, but this breed is now recognized as a wonderful family companion. This breed is affectionate with the family and good with children.

While they can be suspicious of strangers and excessively vocal, they're super outgoing with their friends and family.

The Miniature Schnauzer is good with other dogs, but they often forget their size and will play rough with larger dogs. Though this breed is far from delicate, you'll want to minimize any ruffhousing for obedience and socialization purposes.

Your Mini should steer clear of small animals and pets, like rats and gerbils. No amount of socialization will overcome this breed’s instinct to kill small animals. That said, the Miniature Schnauzer is a smart breed and can be easy to train with patience and consistency since they're eager to please.

Regular exercise is important for this energetic breed — but don't furget about mental stimulation too! These intelligent doggos will thrive with a variety of physically and mentally enriching activities to keep them on their paws.

I've had my mini schnauzer since I was 12 years old and my family and I absolutely love her. She is 14 years old now so her sight and hearing has gone but she still gets excited when she's sniffing around and finds us. My great grandparents used to show schnauzers then judged when they retired from showing, but having my Scarlett made me love the breed and I don't think I will ever have another breed as my family companion.

Our schnauzer recently had to be put down. He had gone blind and suffered from diabetes and cushings. He lived a long life and was the very best dog when he was well! Smartest dog there ever was. Very vocal. Leary of strangers. Food driven. But my oldest sons very best friend. When he passed, we knew we could never replace him and opted to adopt a mixed breed dog from the local shelter. Our heart always will love the miniature schnauzer! 💙

Mini Schnauzers are super loving and cuddly. They like to go on walks and meet new people. Some can be a little hesitant towards others but mainly super friendly.

The mini schnauzers have been pleasant dogs but don't seem to be overly affectionate. They are never hostile or aggressive to both myself, or other dogs or humans that we encounter along the way. They seem to stick to themselves but do love to be out and about and stick to a pretty quick pace when on walks. The males seem to mark their territory a lot!

They are very smart, yet cute dogs! In my experience, they have a lot of energy that they need to get out, and they sometimes like to voice it with barking or playing a game of chase. They are great dogs though and very easy to walk.

They are very vocal and get protective over their owners. Most I have been around are sweet but they are definitely territorial over their owners and their space. One that I have had the most experience with barks at every person and dog they see outside.

The miniature schnauzer I walked was a three year old male who was learning how to walk properly on a leash and to sit on command. He was a sweet dog who loves to jump when he got excited seeing people and other dogs and would stand on his hind legs. He loved to stop and smell almost very single plant we walked by and mark his territory frequently. He didn’t bark once even when other dogs would bark at him through fences and such. He also had a fast pace on the walk from beginning to end and didn’t seem to be tired by the thirty minutes we spent walking around his neighborhood.

While I own two miniature schnauzers myself, I have also walked several through Wag. They are typically vocal, usually barking when you first arrive. They are brave, so will run right up to you to inspect you rather than hiding or showing fear. They are quick to warm up and very affectionate overall. They do tend to enjoy observing or interacting with small animals (such as squirrels). They are very bright, and so learn quickly.

Grayson and I became buddies on our walks around his neighborhood. He was shy every time I arrived, and tried to hide. But once I pulled out his leash, his eagerness to walk overcame his timidity. He was an eager walker, ignoring the other dogs around him, doing his best to mark all his territory as quickly as possible. Watching him interact with his owner, I could see that he was a loving pet and enjoyed spending many cozy evenings at her side. One day we stopped by her work, and when I dropped his leash he ran full-blast for his owner, not even tempted to sniff after a mouse in the bushes nearby. He seemed to be an intelligent, patient dog with a good relationship with his owner.

My experiences with miniature Schnauzers have been fabulous! Such lively yet well composed little buds, it didn't take long to gain their trust when I arrived! They were more than eager to get going on a walk and followed directions very well. They also had no issues interacting with other dogs and people. He seemed moderately athletic and we kept a good pace! I did detect a touch of stubbornness when it came time to turn around and go back home, I think it's safe to say these little buds like their exercise time!

As a seasoned walker for a Miniature Schnauzer, I walked one from the time he was less than six months old to about 3 years old. Extremely loving and affectionate, this little guy stole my heart. He was the runt of the litter and only grew to be about half the size of his brother. Because of this, he not only continually looks like a puppy, but acts like one too. A common misconception seen through him is that even though he is extremely dog friendly, he forgets he is a much smaller dog. When playing rough with a larger dog, he acts as though he is an even match. Because of this, the walker has to be careful to not let the Miniature Schnauzer harm himself without realizing it. He loves to be the center of attention and will always insert himself in the center of a conversation or playdate. He always wants to be out and active and moving, making a great pet for a family. Furthermore into that, he is great with kids and other pets. He has never gotten into a fight and welcomes anyone and anything to come say hi to him. I mostly do not let any dogs meet anything when I do not know him personally, but this dog breed is generally easy to trust around other animals, people and kids. I don’t ever find him afraid of strangers or new places, as I have hardly ever even heard him bark. The Mini Schnauzer will want to be moving constantly, therefore an easily accessible yard would be ideal for this breed. Ideally not made for an apartment type complex, in my opinion. They are vocal and active, making for a less than ideal neighbor. With is quality, I have found him not easily trained. However, I will chock this up to the owner’s fault, he doesn’t listen to any commands. I believe the owner does not use consistency or patience with the dog, as he does whatever he pleases when on a walk. I have tried recently to train him to be better about running in the street, chasing small animals, ect. However, I think it is to late. It is ideal to train the puppy how to act so it is natural behavior later on in life. This dog is intelligent and could easily be trained, there is just a lot of time and effort required to do so.

The Miniature Schnauzer I walked was a tiny little girl. She was an adult but was less than 10 pounds and looked like a puppy. When I first came to the house she was with her owner and she barked at me. She was not aggressive, just very excited. She was full of energy the whole time we hung out. She was not overly affectionate, but still friendly. When passing other people, she didn't really pay any attention to them. She really loved walking and walked at a steady quick pace. She never showed any signs of being tired at all. When we got back to the apartment, she wasn't too keen on me leaving her all alone. I credit this to her being playful, but also to the breed in general being very smart and energetic. They are more suited to a place with room to run and play.

She was my first walk and she was the sweetest and most patient dog! It took me forever to find her leash and although she was excited she just sat there patiently and waited until I was ready. Then she gave me loads of kisses and we went on our way. She was very easy to walk and wasn’t the fastest walker. She liked to stop and sniff around a lot and since there was a lot of grass around she stopped all the time. She wasn’t fond of other dogs. She seemed very independent and kind. She didn’t need a lot of exercise to get her tired and she was content with her 30 minutes walking around the neighborhood. After the walk she was panting so much and she got her treats and she laid right down back on her bed and went to sleep even before I had left! Very easy walker and sweet little girl.

I currently own a Miniature Schnauzer. I have had her since she was 3 months old and she is currently almost 8 years old. As a puppy, she was very playful. Since she is older now she is not quite as playful, and has become a bit more mellow, but still gets very excited and energetic whenever someone comes home or when we go on walks. She is very smart and was very easy to train. She is and has always been a jumper. And she jumps high. She jumps on anyone and everyone to enters our home. It’s her way of saying hello and greeting them. She loves people and is always excited when someone comes home or when people come over. As a puppy she liked to run around the yard and play with toys. She gets very excited when we go on walks. She is a puller, so we use a harness. When I say excited, I do mean EXCITED. As soon as she even sees me pick up her leash she starts full on wailing with excitement and this goes on a good 5 minutes into the walk. She doesn’t walk, she runs back and forth, and all over the place. She likes to look for bunnies and goes crazy when she sees one. She has caught a few because she is very fast. She is a runner. If she can get out the door she will BOLT and she is very fast so it is hard to get her back. She’s a bit of a nervous nelly. She doesn’t like car rides and will cry the whole way. She doesn’t like going out in the snow or rain. Doesn’t like to get wet, doesn’t like baths, but she will tolerate them. We groom her frequently because her fur gets ratty and stinky fairly quickly, even though she isn’t much of an outdoorsy dog. She is very loyal to her family. Overall, she is a very excitable and energetic dog, but is also very loyal and loving. She gets very said whenever we leave the house and as mentioned earlier, is always very excited when we come home. She was very easy to train and is very smart. She gets along well with people and other dogs, but is protective of her family and her home. She will bark at people and dogs who walk by our house during the day.

The schnauzer I walk is very sweet, but also extremely shy. Whenever I first come into the apartment he will hide under the bed and it takes some persuasion to convince him to come back out so we can go on a walk. Talking in a calm voice and bribing them with treats can help them to come out so you can show that you'd like to be friends. Once you establish a relationship, they are very sweet and well-behaved. They are generally very easy to walk, but do like to bark at times. They don't walk too fast, but enjoy a leisurely pace and taking the time to smell everything along the way. They are gentle companion and in my experience are pleasantly mild mannered.

The mini schnauzer I walked was cautious around me. They can be aloof and hesitant around strangers at first, but do warm up. They have an unusually high prey drive that can not be trained, so caution is required around smaller pets and animals. They have a lot of energy and spunky personalities. They display a lot of moxie. They are very funny looking, often called "the old man of dogs". They come in full size and mini size which is better suited if you live in a shoebox, also known as a NYC apartment. They love to chase stuff and eat stuff off the ground. At least, this particular dog did. It just wanted to do what it wanted to do, and it wasnt asking for my permission. Overall, they have interesting personalities but not the best breed out there by any means.

The Miniature Schnauzers that I have walked have not been the warmest dogs, but have not been mean by any sense of the word. The mini schnauzers have what I would call a more blasé attitude towards both the walk and the walker, however, by the end of the walks they are much more affectionate and do love getting their tummies rubbed. They can be quite stubborn. In my experience they have refused to walk away from their house and walk in the rain, but I believe that is more specific to the certain dog. One thing I have noticed that they have in common is that they prefer ad slower walking pace with lots of chances for sniffs. They play well with other dogs and rarely have behavior issues.

Snoopy is my third miniature schnauzer and its hard for me to imagine myself with any other breed. They are smart, affectionate, humorously naughty. As I once read in a mini schnauzer book, they will follow the rules when youre around but dont expect them too when youre not. This is more a sign of intelligence than outright disobedience. They can be vocal when they get on a roll, but this is one facet compared to multiple, wonderful facets. I just love them.

Mario is our third mini schnauzer and I cannot imagine living in a house without one. He has been our hardest one to train, but he is a good alert dog. If hears absolutely anything, he'll bark until you go check it out and then go get him to prove that everything is okay. Mario loves his window he looks out all the time and his car rides. He and his sister constantly want bones and cuddles and love to watch movies and play boardgames with us. He is very set in his ways and will always get the last bark when you tell him to be quiet and stop barking but you can't help but to laugh at him and his little baby barks, hoping that you didn't hear him but he still got the last word in your argument.

I love my dog, Smokey. I've had him since he was a puppy and old enough to come home. As a puppy, he was incredibly playful, but also very laid back. After he was neutered, he was put on a steroid medication, and now has weird lumps on his side, and the front of his chest. It still worries me, a lot actually, even after taking him to the vet and being reassured it's nothing to worry about. Now that he is getting older, Smokey has contracted gingivitis and needs his front teeth pulled. He likes to be lazy and sleep most of the day, or at least until my little sister and I get home from school. He is a little harder to provoke now, but will still be playful more or less. He likes to chase his hedgehog and turtle down the hallway, bring it back to us, and then run away with it before we can get to it. Smokey is very much my little fat boy, and will do anything for a treat as well. My favorite trick is getting him to dance in a circle on his hind legs. All in all, I wouldn't have traded Smokey for the world. I got him when I was 10 years old, and he has been a truly great k9 companion.

I love this breed because they the right size & weight for me to handle. The trainability is good but they love the competition & confirmation side. I have been involved in Dog Shows in South Australia for over 10 yrs & I love the atmosphere of the competition. Having so many Overseas Judges in Adelaide in 1 venue is such a privilege. Very happy to attend another Dog Show in Adelaide,SA(Australia) in the near future. Looking forward to the Royal Adelaide Show in September.

My husband and I love this breed. We have looked into the breed prior to adopting. The trainability is extremely well, given his age he has already been 50% potty trained. He does have bursts of energy and followed by naps. His personality is slowly coming out and it is full of live. We can definitely sense his intelligence.

Mel, unfortunately passed away September 2019, was the family dog for 15 years. She was very loyal, loved spending time with us, very good watchdog, didn't get along very well with other dogs, but she had the most amazing and cute dog eyes, they were deep and affectionate. She was always healthy, had puppies when she was 3 years old, lived a full life. She had two benign tumors that did not affect her health at all. She unfortunately had a stroke, went blind and deaf so we had to put her down.

Rasta is happy and loves seeing new things, though he doesn’t like strangers unless they prove that they mean no harm. He’s extremely protective and he truly believes that he is bigger than he really is. He gets along well with other dogs.

Wilma is currently 2 years old and is a miniature schnauzer. Going along with her breed, she is a friendly dog but will bark at all strangers until she gets used to them. Generally Wilma barks at people if they get too close. Otherwise, she is reasonably healthy for a schnauzer with the exception of a few health cautions. Wilma loves interacting with other people and dogs if they treat her well. She can be good with kids and would make a great family pet if handled correctly. Overall, Wilma is a very lively dog with lots of energy. Miniature schnauzer are recommended for quiet house holds with a calm setting. In conclusion, Wilma is a very nice dog.

Question - My pet
Question

I need some advice on walking my 41/2 mth old mini schnauzer, We cannot walk more then 3 steps without her stubbornly refusing to move as she mostly wants to sniff but sometimes a noise will be the cause or someone walking across the other side of the road, sometimes for no reason at all. Occasionally she will walk for a short burst and he will walk directly behind another dogs behind ! It's driving me nuts I know it's important to allow for sniffing, but walks are so unpleasantly slow. I would like to get a bit of distance done with her!
