This little dog is one that everyone loves the minute they see her. Small, fluffy and adorable, the Papi-poo is like a living, moving soft toy. They are ideal for families, seniors or singles and provide the affection and devotion of a true companion. These small dogs have a big personality; they are gentle, intelligent, lively and even a bit mischievous but they can get away with it with their beguiling expression. They are the result of crossing the Papillon with a Poodle which has produced a dog that has loads of energy, is easy and willing to be trained,  and is relatively easy to care for although that lovely fluffy coat does require regular maintenance. They love to explore their home, often traipsing along with you wherever you go. Apartment living is just fine with this pooch, or a house with a yard to explore will be just as eagerly accepted.  With their bright shiny eyes and soft medium length coat, they are truly hard to resist - and they know it.

Papi-poo Breed History

The Papi-poo is known as a designer or hybrid dog, the result of a cross between a Papillon and the Poodle. To discover the characteristics that make up this dog, we have to look to the parent breeds. The Papillon is an old breed, and dates back as far as the 1500s when they were popular with noble women throughout Europe. They were prized as companion dogs and possibly watchdogs for their mistresses, and enjoyed the pomp and affection they received. The name is French and was given to the breed when during the 17th century their appearance changed from having floppy ears to upright ears. Apparently, the nobility decided that they looked like a butterfly, hence the name change. The ears weren't the only change; their solid color slowly changed into a white with patches. The Papillon has remained a popular small dog throughout the years, and some can be highly strung and nervous, and they become very attached to their owners. The Poodle is also an ancient breed coming originally from Germany. They were used as working dogs and retrieved water fowl for their owners. Their unique coat helped to protected them from the water. The French embraced the Poodle when it arrived in the 15th Century, and they refined the breed into the three types we know today. The Standard Poodle is the water fowl retriever, the Miniature is used to find truffles, and the Toy Poodle was and still is the pampered companion. The circus people of the day discovered how highly intelligent the dog was, and trained them to perform to crowds of adoring people. These people are also responsible for the Poodles outrageous haircut which the French people loved and refined. The Poodle was recognised in American in 1886 and while some think of the breed as being aloof and wary, to their families the Poodle is a comedian, a friend, and affectionate family member.

Papi-poo Breed Appearance

The Papi-poo has a well proportioned body with short but strong legs. The head is often rounded and their ears are set wide apart and can be either long and floppy or pricked up giving them an alert appearance. While puppies can vary in appearance even within the same litter, generally this small dog looks like an appealing soft toy that has come to life. With soft feathering around their medium length muzzle and hairy eyebrows, they definitely have that appeal value. Soft wavy hair and tail, bright expressieve eyes, and a deep black small nose adds to her charm. They come in a variety of colors, often a combination of one or more tones. Small paws, lots of hair and a ton of energy and enthusiasm describes the Papi-poo's character and appearance.

Papi-poo Breed Maintenance

While the Papi-poo is not a heavy shedder, they do require brushing most days just to keep the hair looking good and to prevent tangling. They will also require  a dog groomer to provide a good trim every couple of months, especially in the summer months. They don't need constant bathing, a good guide is only when it is needed, using a mild dog shampoo to protect the natural oils in the skin. Other maintenance issues are their teeth; they will need these brushed at least twice a week to maintain oral health. It is best to start training for this when they are a young puppy, making a game out of it while they get used to the process. Finally an ear and eye check, plus a gentle nail clip will keep your Papi-poo looking smart.

Papi-poo Temperament

The Papi-poo is a gentle, funny, lively and devoted dog but they can be sensitive to tone of voice or develop separation anxiety if left alone for too long. On meeting new people, they can be a bit wary and will alert you to strangers coming onto the property by barking loudly. They are a smart little dog who enjoys pleasing so will take well to training as long as they are dealt with gently but firmly, and recive lots of praise and rewards. This breed is an ideal family dog as they love children but keep in mind that as a puppy they will be very small and can be hurt easily by boisterous youngsters. Teach your children that the dog is not a toy and to be gentle with her. The reward for this effort will result in a well socialised confident dog who will repay the family with affection and devotion. The Papi-poo also will get along with other household pets and other dogs. They consider themselves part of your family, and will want to be in on all the family outings and gatherings. The Papi-poo doesn't just like company, she needs a lot of involvement so if you are in a job that means she is left alone a lot of the time, then this dog is not for you. They are a dog who wants to be by your side, in your lap or on the end of a leash while they take you for a walk. Adaptable to apartment living or a house with a yard, these little dogs are a true companion.

Papi-poo Activity Requirements

The Papi-poo is a dog with a lot of energy although she will wear most of that off around the house by following you around or playing with the children. Although small, she will benefit from a daily walk just to get her out there socialising with other dogs and people. It is better for her health as well. A walk around the neighborhood or some free time to run and play with her buddies at the pet park is always welcomed, and although she is small, she will try to keep up with the larger dogs. They love learning tricks, and are a people pleaser so they enjoy a bit of training as long as it is positive and rewarding. The Papi-poo will join in any game, loves water play and demands to be the centre of attention. Then later they will curl up on your lap, exhausted but happy.

Lilah is the most amazing dog, shes a snuggle bug and loves to be held ever since she was a puppy! shes very smart! picking up anything i teach her in days....and using it to get treats and snuggles. i taught her to beg and now she uses it all the time for her own advantage to steal our hearts, and snacks. this dog love affection, kisses and snuggles, she really cant get enough. this dog has amazing instincts, she is so smart for herself and will do anything to survive. you have to be careful coz she will roll in anything...and i mean anything, to cover up her scent. she is great in the winter and loves the snow, he loves to dig big holes in the snow and play. she loves a good game of fetch and swimming. I wouldn't recommend them around small children, they flail and scream too much for my girls liking. very adaptable to her environments and willing to and try new things. she as a very tough streak and will bark at larger dogs, i find she not very social to other dogs, and will just keep to herself and us on our walks. but that suits me just fine she loves human company. my baby girl is very vocal (i taught her how to speak) and now shes always talking, and communicating with us. i know what every bark means it can be rather handy you never have to guess what she wants with her she will come out and tell you...very loudly.

Buffy is highly intelligent and the sweetest dog you can imagine. She often stands upright on her hind legs and walks around. She announces any visitor by barking, but is friendly with them. and is the "nicest" dog we have had.

Penny is the best dog I've ever had. I've had many other breeds from Chihuahuas to Great Danes. She has he best personality and is just the happiest girl ever. Little hard to house train but typical for smaller dogs. She is 6 months and weighs in at 6 lbs, the runt of the litter!

He is very anxious and I dont know how old he is. I got him from a lady who said she rescued him and didn't have money to care for him anymore. He has been with me three years and it took two years to get him to trust us. He finally will go in the car willingly and sometimes will sit in my lap though he doesn't like to be held. He is hard to train. Something bad happened to him and they said he came from a puppy mill. Vet thinks he's around 8 years.
