Jack Russell Terrier

The cute Papillon and the mischievous Jack Russell Terrier are the parents of this new hybrid breed called the Papijack. Though they may be little, these dogs might not be the best choice for owners who live in apartments, because they can be protective and territorial and may feel the need to bark at every little sound. They might go bouncing off the walls if they do not get enough exercise as well, since they have high activity needs. These dogs have very expressive but fun personalities and love to spend time with their owners. Their coat and appearance are easy to maintain, although they do need lots of exercise.

Papijack Breed History

The Papijack is one of the new designer dog breeds. The name Papijack is used to represent the combination between the two parent breeds; the Papillon and the Jack Russell Terrier. Papillons are one of the oldest breeds and have been around for about 700 years. Their history began in Europe, where the dogs most commonly had dropped ears. Back then, they were called Dwarf Spaniels and could often be seen in Italian Renaissance paintings from between the 13th and 15th centuries. These works of art often showed Papillon dogs sitting with French and Spanish noblewomen. Eventually they were called Continental Toy Spaniels, or simply Toy Spaniels. The name Papillon was given to the erect eared variety of these dogs since the ears with the long silky fur would resemble a butterfly. The drop eared variety was then known as the Phalene. The Jack Russell Terrier was actually given their name in honor of Rev. John Russell, who was a clergyman. These small dogs were primarily used in the mid-1800s for hunting red fox by digging them out of their dens. The body type of these dogs is quite varied, since the breeders prioritized hunting skills over appearance. Eventually, some breed enthusiasts chose to change the Jack Russell Terrier Association of America into the Parson Russell Terrier Association of America. A Russell Terrier would fall into the Parson category if they fit the ideal appearance for showing. Jack Russells would be the dogs who were used for work. Together the Papillon and the Jack Russell Terrier were used to create the Papijack.

Papijack Breed Appearance

Papijacks are the offspring of a Papillon dog and a Jack Russell Terrier and will adopt some physical traits from both of these purebred breeds. The Papillon is known as a small dog with fine bones and little heads that are slightly rounded between the ears. These dogs have well defined stops and short, thin muzzles that taper towards the end. The eyes will be dark, round and medium in size with black rims. This breed has ears that can be either dropped and rounded at the tips or erect and pointy. The ears will have long and fringed fur which give off a sort of butterfly look, hence the name of the breed. The dogs with dropped ears are usually referred to as Phalene Papillon. These dogs have scissor bite teeth and the high set tails, which will also be covered in long silky hair, will rest over the body. This beautiful long hair can also be found on the chest and the back of the legs. The other parent breed is small but has a very athletic appearance. Between the ears the skull is flat and has a slight taper. These dogs have non abrupt stops that are defined. Their dark eyes are non protruding and almond shaped, and the ears, which are v-shaped, face forward. Their teeth will connect with a scissors bite, and the tail is high set. These dogs have coats which come in two types; the smooth and the broken. Jack Russell Terriers have small chests which allow them to fit into the burrows of their prey. The forelegs are straight and long, whereas the hind ends are muscular and strong. Your Papijack can take after either one of the parents. Some are seen that look like the Jack Russell Terrier, with a square appearance and a full muzzle. Others will be more dainty and furry like the Papillon.

Papijack Breed Maintenance

Considering the needs of the parent breeds, these tiny hybrid dogs will have a moderate maintenance level. Looking first at the Papillon, we know that their coat will need to be brushed and combed daily as well as bathed as needed. The Jack Russell Terrier has very easy to groom fur that needs regular brushing and bathing. The rough coat variety will need to be stripped, as well as any dog who wants to participate in shows. Other needs include teeth brushing and nail clipping. Keeping your dog’s teeth and gums healthy is easy, as long as you brush them at least two to three times every week or, even better, every day. Nail clipping will be needed around once or twice a month. This is the average, and if a dog is more or less active than most it will affect how often they will need to be clipped. Ear infections are also a concern for dog owners. However, they can be avoided if the owner cleans and checks the pet’s ears at least once a week.

Papijacks can suffer from a variety of health concerns. Secure pet health insurance today to avoid high veterinary care costs. Wag! Wellness lets pet parents compare insurance plans from leading companies like Figo and Spot. Find the “pawfect” plan for your pet in just a few clicks!

Papijack Temperament

The personalities of these hybrid dogs will usually be somewhere in between those of the parents. The Papillon is a smart and friendly dog that loves playing outside. They are charming and fun to be around, as well as affectionate and gentle. These dogs are obedient and do not usually bark. When properly socialized, they can be a good match for households that have cats. If these dogs are brought up correctly and not taught to be dominant and high strung, they will make great and trusted companions around children too. They are easy to train dogs, aside from housebreaking. It is often said that Jack Russell Terriers have big personalities for such small dogs. These smart dogs catch on to anything and have sassy personalities. They can be mischievous with minds of their own. Because of their impressive smarts, they are usually easy to train and are also very talented in sports and activities. They make wonderful family pets as well. Owners of the Papijack say they are a spritely dog who listens well and has energy to burn.

Papijack Activity Requirements

The activity requirements of designer dogs will depend on those of the parents. In the case of the Papijack, we must first consider the activity level of the Papillon and then later compare it to the Jack Russell Terrier. Papillons will need at least a daily walk along with some play time and just some time to wander around in the yard. If this designer dog takes on some habits from the Jack Russell Terrier, they will need to be well exercised before being left alone in the house, as they can be hard to deal with if they have too much energy bottled inside them. A home with a yard is ideal for this hybrid; make sure you supervise your Papijack when outside as he does love to dig and may find an easy escape route.

Tucker is adopted from a shelter after a tornado in our area. The vet said her was about 1yr old at the time. We believe the other pup in the cage with him was his brother because they looked alike but different colors. They said her was taken home by 2 families and returned but I told my husband her was just quiet and afraid. He was slightly underweight but he quickly adapted. He loves to sleep right next to anyone in the bed. He rarely barks except to protect the house (from people taking a walk down the street). He loves riding in the car and is SUPER SMART. He is the most loving pet that we have either had. We only regret we did not also adopt this brother.

Mea has been a playful rascal since we were lucky enough to find her at a graduation party. She was, by the vet's estimation, no more than a month old; the young girl (who'd been carrying the little fuzzball in a tomato box looking for nice people to give her a home) said Mea had already been in three other places, one of which had locked her in a bathroom all day. Poor little puppy! Well, my mom took her in and loved and trained her. Mea got her name because she was constantly tugging on her "brother and sister" Cavalier King Charles Spaniel's ears... which, needless to say, my mom didn't like too much. Mea loved pouncing on moths, nosing treats out of toilet paper rolls, wagging a stuffed carrot that was bigger than she was...such a feisty pup! When my parents passed away seven years ago, months apart, I inherited Mea. She went through a bout of depression lasting half a year. Gradually, though, she regained her energy. I think she was cheered by being exposed to new things like challenging Australian Shepherds to races at the dog park (she on the tiny dog side, at 8 lbs., always tied or beat them). She's still my constant companion, with healthy heart and lungs, clear eyes and ears, and a good grrrr for any remote control car or mail delivery who threatens her domicile.

this is the most wonderful dog. flyer has such an even temperament its amazing, hes high energy but has an off switch. this is by far the smartest dog I've ever seen, he can pick up anything you want to teach him and hes loyal as the day is long. hes very willing to please and always wants to make you happy. hes so fast and love to run outside, and he can jump like I've never seen to catch a ball mid air. this breed is very sensitive to punishment and he will be immediately apologetic, crawling across the floor and wiggling his way into your lap...and heart! (its impossible to stay mad) He's been apart of our family for a very long time and we can't think of life without him.

Lady is so smart that you sometimes wonder if she's human. She can understand full sentences, and even just the beginning of a sentence to know what's going on. You can see it in her eyes how much she enjoys learning new tricks and using her intelligent brain. The way she looks at you is almost human-like. She has always been very energetic and she lives for long walks. People are always surprised by the fact that she is 7 years old, since she acts like a young dog. She has a very gentle personality (that's why she's called Lady), and she is very patient and nice to kids of all ages. Lady loves it when people come home to us. She shows that by wagging her tail like there's no tomorrow and by being very charming and affectionate to the guests. She is very good at reading emotions, and knowing what is going to happen next without being told. Although she is mostly a wonderful dog, she is not perfect. She has a strong temperament, and quickly becomes angry when seeing a big dog or when you trim her nails. She growls at you when you trim her nails, but she couldn't hurt anyone. She doesn't want to do that since she is otherwise such a friendly dog. She can often figure out solutions to things she doesn't like to do, which means that you always have to think a step further when you take care of her. When you learn to deal with her temperament and overly-intelligent mind, you fall in love with her and realize that she is perfect. I love Lady more than anything, and she is my best friend. I become emotional just by thinking about how much she means to me.

My sweet Mimi, she ended up clinging to that name. I rescued my sweet dog from the shelter and she's such a sweet girl. I was concerned at first because I did not hear her bark once, until my little sister ran towards my car when she realized I got a companion for our home haha. Sometimes she can be hard to train because I think she is still getting used to everyone at my home. My favorite part of my dad now has become my days coming back home to her. As soon as she hears my keys jingle and the door open, you can hear her claws clicking on the tile floor and running towards me to sniff my shoes. The moment she realizes its me, she wags her tail and runs in circles and jumps straight up on my legs, haha it's to most refreshing and comforting thing. She loves sleeping on the beds and I even spoiled her by letting her keep one of my blankets for her doggy bed since it smells like me, haha. Mimi has been such a shift in my household, especially since my father has been sick. Mimi has brightened up everyone's day and has also strengthened our mental health and emotions when dealing with any obstacle at home. Mimi is friendly and social and does great with kids and senior adults. However, she's not a fan of any female dogs. Hopefully she gets used to my voice and this environment. I finally discovered what type of small mix she is and a Papijack is exactly it !! They are the best !

Our beloved Jack passed away yesterday. He was just shy of 17 and we had him since he was 6 weeks old. He was the best dog ever. When he was younger he was a mischievous ball of energy, little bull headed, very playful, very smart. This breed definitely requires a lot of attention so if you don’t have time to devote to them choose a different dog because it isn’t fair to them. His energy level decreased around 12 years then he became more of a lap dog very loving and a bit clingy. He loved cuddling under the covers at night and always wanted to be near you. He did not like being alone. The only health issues we ever had with him (until his final months) were skin allergies usually in fall. He was a blessing and we miss him so much but cherish every moment we had with him.
