He may come in a variety of colors, depending on the dominant parent breed. He is happy in an apartment or a home with or without a yard. He does not require much in the way of exercise. He is also quite easy to train. He is better suited for families with older children. The Pekalier does tend to get along well with other dogs, but early socialization is recommended in order to teach your Pekalier exactly what behavior you expect from him.

Pekalier Breed History

The Pekalier is a fairly rare hybrid dog. In order to understand his origins, we can look at the history of his parent breeds in order to understand more about the Pekalier. The Pekingese is a dog of great legend. The Chinese tell a tale of a lion who fell in love with a marmoset monkey. The lion asked Buddha to make him smaller so that he could marry his love while allowing him to retain the bravery of the lion's personality. Buddha agreed, and the pair produced a line of dogs known as the Fu Lin dogs. These dogs would become imperial favorites. In fact, during the Opium Wars of the 1800s, British soldiers happened upon the Pekingese in the imperial palace as they stormed the building. Taking the dogs as a war prize, the soldiers introduced the dogs to the British royalty, who developed a fondness for the breed just as Chinese royalty had. While we do not know exactly how the breed was brought to the United States, we do know that the first Pekingese was registered with the American Kennel Club by 1910. The breed remains rather popular today. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was also a favorite of English nobility. Mary, Queen of Scots had her Cavalier King Charles walk with her as she went to her death by execution in the 1600s. King Charles II, for whom the breed was named, had at least two or three of the dogs with him at all times, even when he went to the House of Parliament. After Charles II's death, the dog's popularity fell off. However, in the 1920s, American Roswell Eldridge began searching England for dogs resembling the Cavalier King Charles. In 1928, after five years of searching and offering twenty-five pounds to the person who would give him the best male and female pair, a woman named Mostyn Walker claimed the prize and gave her pair to Eldridge's family (he had died only a month before). The Cavalier was finally imported to the United States in the 1940s, and in 1995, the first Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was registered with the American Kennel Club.

Pekalier Breed Appearance

The Pekalier is considered very small. At maturity he will weigh no more than eighteen pounds. He will have short, sturdy legs. He will usually have straight, silky fur. He may have feathering around his legs, tail, and ears. His ears will be long and floppy. His exact coloring will be dependent upon the dominant parent breed; however, generally, one can expect him to be black and brown, brown and white, or black and white. He may be a light tan color with a white chest and belly. He may have a blaze on his face as well. His hair may be wavy, much like the Cavalier King Charles parent breed.

Pekalier Breed Maintenance

The Pekalier will require a moderate amount of maintenance. His hair will likely be long and silky. He will need daily brushing to keep his fur looking clean and healthy. Brush his teeth two or three times a week to prevent the build up of tartar. Frequent brushing prevents bad breath as well. The ears of the Pekalier deserve special attention. Using a washcloth soaked in warm water, wipe out his ears weekly. Look for any redness or bad odor as this is indicative of infection. Trim his nails every two to three weeks. A good rule of thumb is to listen as he walks on a tile floor. If you can hear his nails clicking on the floor, it is time to cut them.

Pekalier Temperament

The Pekalier is a sweet, smart, and affectionate little dog. However, it must be noted that the Pekalier is not recommended for those families with small children. This is not because the Pekalier dislikes children, but because of his small size. Many younger children do not understand that tight hugs can injure the Pekalier, and the Pekalier may become upset when small children pull his hair. This may cause him to nip at a small child. However, the Pekalier is good with other dogs. He may also be good with other types of pets if he is accustomed to them from a younger age. He is fairly easy to train. Use positive rewards  to reinforce good behavior.

Pekalier Activity Requirements

The Pekalier is not an overly active dog. He will need only a minimum of daily exercise to remain happy and healthy. A short walk with you once or twice daily will suffice. However, both you and the Pekalier will enjoy trips to the dog park. Remember that the Pekalier may be brachycephalic. This means he must never be allowed to become overheated or overexerted. Keep water close by while exercising. The Pekalier will also enjoy play time in a fenced-in area. With a dog as small as the Pekalier, it is important to give him multiple, short bursts of activity in order to keep him healthy. He is not prone to separation anxiety, but taking him along for short walks around the neighborhood will keep him active and healthy for many years to come.

He is a very playful but also a coward. He's afraid of height, water, thunderstorm. He eats a lot and loves food so much. He's very aggressive when it comes to food and bath. Other than that he's a very sweet, sensitive, protective and lovely little bro. He loves following people around.

He is the greatest dog of all time. Sleeps like mad but ready to go when it's time for his walks. He will not go potty in the yard he needs to be on a walk. He is a true snuggle bug and couch potato. I have been in love for one year!

He’s a rescue therefore is super attached to me, he never leaves my side when I’m home & is waiting at the door/window as soon as I pull in the driveway. He’s always affectionate and ready to play. He loves his naps though. Very protective of anyone that gets to close, he has to check them out first even anyone just walking by the house causes him to bark & howl. He does cry and whine if he doesn’t get his way but is always loving and super sweet. He definitely loves attention & constantly requires it. Also loves to eat, always searching for treats and snacks. Couldn’t ask for a better dog!!! Completely in love!

Stella is the most wonderful dog ever. She is super smart, so easy to train & loves learning new tricks. She rings a bell when she needs to potty or just wants to go outside, she can sit, lay down, speak, shake, give a high five, roll over & beg. She is very loyal & loving. She loves to travel with us. We couldn’t have asked for a better addition to our family.

He is one of the most wonderful things in my life. He express a lot of love, happines, gratitude and beautiful peace. Even when he's not a guardian. He is so brave and has no fears if he feels attacked. And on the other hand can be a lovely friend with others including cats and small dogs. Never surrender and totally grateful of having him.
