Pit Pei

Hybrid dogs are the combination between two purebred breeds. The history of the Pit Pei begins with the creation of the Shar-Pei and the American Pitbull Terrier. The origin of the Shar-Pei is sort of a mystery. Pictures of these dogs were found on ancient pottery which suggests that the breed could have existed since around 206 B.C. They are thought to be descendants of the Chow Chow since both breeds have distinct purple tongues. The name of the breed translates to sandy coat. These dogs were quite multipurpose and were often used by the Chinese on farms, for tracking, hunting, herding, protecting stock, as ratters and as guard dogs around the house and members of the family. Unfortunately these dogs also have a history in dog fighting, which they were skilled at since their coat and skin made it hard for the opponent dogs to grab. The population of the Shar-Pei decreased throughout the Communist Revolution but was saved by a businessman from Hong Kong named Matgo Law. He got a few of the dogs and featured them in an American magazine to help spread awareness about the breed, and it has been a very popular dog choice since then. American Pitbull Terriers were developed in England, where they were known as Staffordshire Bull Terriers. These dogs were a cross between several types of Terrier dogs and English Bulldogs. It is unknown for sure the exact type of Terrier dogs used to create this breed, although the Black and Tan Terrier, the Fox Terrier and the White English Terrier are thought to be among the mix. These dogs were originally used by butchers and hunters to manage bulls and to hold game. They also have a darker past which involved blood sports such as bear and bull baiting. However, once these practices were banned in England during the 1800s, this breed was used in dog fighting. They made their way to the United States partway through the 1800s, which is where they got their current name, among others. Thankfully, today they lead a much kinder life then their ancestors did.
