Pit Peis are a new designer dog breed that was created from a Shar-Pei and an American Pitbull Terrier. These parent breeds are both different and similar at the same time. They can both be stubborn and need experienced owners, but they have different appearances on the outside. Because of this, we can determine some qualities that the Pit Pei is bound to develop, while others can factors can be hard to predict. These dogs have thick coats, which means that they prefer colder temperatures and should not be exercised too much in the warm weather. Since they are a medium sized breed, they will do best living in large homes with a yard. However, they can adapt to apartment life as long as they receive the required amount of daily exercise.

Pit Pei Breed History

Hybrid dogs are the combination between two purebred breeds. The history of the Pit Pei begins with the creation of the Shar-Pei and the American Pitbull Terrier. The origin of the Shar-Pei is sort of a mystery. Pictures of these dogs were found on ancient pottery which suggests that the breed could have existed since around 206 B.C. They are thought to be descendants of the Chow Chow since both breeds have distinct purple tongues. The name of the breed translates to sandy coat. These dogs were quite multipurpose and were often used by the Chinese on farms, for tracking, hunting, herding, protecting stock, as ratters and as guard dogs around the house and members of the family. Unfortunately these dogs also have a history in dog fighting, which they were skilled at since their coat and skin made it hard for the opponent dogs to grab. The population of the Shar-Pei decreased throughout the Communist Revolution but was saved by a businessman from Hong Kong named Matgo Law. He got a few of the dogs and featured them in an American magazine to help spread awareness about the breed, and it has been a very popular dog choice since then. American Pitbull Terriers were developed in England, where they were known as Staffordshire Bull Terriers. These dogs were a cross between several types of Terrier dogs and English Bulldogs. It is unknown for sure the exact type of Terrier dogs used to create this breed, although the Black and Tan Terrier, the Fox Terrier and the White English Terrier are thought to be among the mix. These dogs were originally used by butchers and hunters to manage bulls and to hold game. They also have a darker past which involved blood sports such as bear and bull baiting. However, once these practices were banned in England during the 1800s, this breed was used in dog fighting. They made their way to the United States partway through the 1800s, which is where they got their current name, among others. Thankfully, today they lead a much kinder life then their ancestors did.

Pit Pei Breed Appearance

Since Pit Peis are hybrid breeds, they do not have specific physical standards. These dogs can look like a mix between the Shar-Pei and the American Pitbull Terrier, or they could look like one more than the other. The coat of a Shar-Pei is extremely harsh, with fur that is never wavy or soft. Instead, the Shar Pei’s fur is described as short, smooth and stiff, and must be a solid color. The American Pitbull Terrier has a differently textured coat that can have patterns. The overall result of mixing these breeds will be a medium sized dog with a medium length coat and small paws. The eyes will be dark like the snout, which are characteristics adopted from the Shar-Pei parent. The American Pitbull Terrier can also be seen in these dogs in their stocky frame and strong jawline. It is possible that some dogs from this hybrid breed will look different from others.

Pit Pei Breed Maintenance

Since this designer breed usually adopts the short and fine hair of the American Pitbull Terrier, they won’t have very high maintenance grooming needs and will only need weekly coat care. During the shedding seasons, you may want to up the brushing frequency to help control the shedding. They will need to have the folds of their skin cleaned thoroughly while being bathed. In fact, the folds should be checked daily for moisture build up or dirt accumulation. Other needs for these dogs include brushing their teeth, clipping their nails and cleaning their ears. Your pet’s teeth need to be cleaned and maintained, just like yours, and should be brushed at least two the three times per week. Their nails need to be trimmed regularly as well. Depending on how fast your dog’s nails grow, they will need to be clipped around once every month or two. Your dog’s ears will need to be wiped clean weekly in order to prevent the development of ear infections.

Pit Pei Temperament

Shar-Pei and American Pitbull Terrier mixes take on personality traits from both of the parent breeds. Because of the two breeds used to make the Pit Pei, these dogs could be noisy and like to bark, and therefore might not be the perfect match for owners who live in apartments. Both the Shar-Pei and the American Pitbull Terrier are known to be stubborn, which means that the Pit Pei should be paired with a strong owner who has some previous dog experience. These dogs respond best to positive reinforcement. Since both the American Pitbull Terrier and the Shar-Pei were originally bred as fighting dogs, the offspring of these breeds who are not brought up properly may be aggressive towards other dogs. Both parent breeds are not usually a good match for children, so we can expect similar behaviour from the Pit Pei. Shar-Peis are quite independent and often choose to bond with one person, whereas the American Pitbull Terrier is more affectionate to all of it’s people.

Pit Pei Activity Requirements

The designer Pit Pei dog has parents that gain weight easily. Because of this, the owners of these dogs should be cautious to not overfeed their pet. Ensuring that they receive enough physical exercise will also keep them from becoming obese. These dogs enjoy all forms of exercise but especially like to accompany their owners on walks. However, you will need to be mindful of their thick coat when exercising them in the hot weather. They will need frequent breaks and lots of water to keep them from overheating. These dogs are only suited to living in apartments if they get enough exercise, as they prefer to live in open houses with a yard.

She enjoys running and tug of war with toys.
Very easily trained when consistency is applied. Gets along well with my small dog. Barks at anything all day. Very stubborn. Always wants food. Definitely needs fed throughout day in portions. Stomachache occurs with some dog food. Had to go expensive. Awesome with kids and other fur babies. No signs of aggressive behavior.

he had a low immune system as a puppy. He ended up with mites which is a pitbull problem. He has various different allergies. He's stubborn and doesn't like to be told what to do and will do the opposite. But I babied him from a very small age and that seems to have made him a docile yet stubborn dog...similar to a Frenchie or a bulldog. As a small puppy he tried to get feisty with me while playing on a blanket, because of the way he was moving it caused static. When he attempted to bite me, it shocked him. He seems to think I have the power of electricity in my fingers so even that he's older he takes me seriously. He was a big scaredy-cat and still is. As a puppy he was scared of makeup brushes, the hamper, plastic bags, lemons, toys made out of soft squeaky rubber, lighters, persimmons, anything that opens and closes like a vegetable steamer and strainer or hands, pretty much anything he doesn't understand. He's not as bad now but he still has his moments. I have a queen-size bed that I share with my boyfriend and my Daryl and we haven't slept comfortably since he reached his maximum height and weight. He loves all of us dearly. We have an Australian Cattle Dog that nipped at him to show him who was boss when he was a puppy. Now he towers over him but respects him. He tries to sit on my lap every day. He's a 60 lb giant but he doesn't understand how big he is. He's the softest dog I've ever owned. He never had any chewing problems as a puppy or digging problems. He barks when the doorbell rings and when people pass by on skateboards but aside from that he's the coolest dog ever

My best friend. Super loud and begs all the time. Loves people and cats, not so much a dog dog besides buddy. Loves to bark but she’s the sweetest baby, loves loads of kisses, loves to cuddle with me under the blanket.

Duke is sure a lover instead of a fighter. He likes to snuggle more than anything but a good game of tug of war is a close second.

Ginger was a fantastic dog. She loved to snuggle. She was very protective of the yard and would fence fight even if she knew you. She had a calming nature wabout her and would snuggle you to sleep if you were stressed. She would help you sleep at night if you didn't feel well. She could be stubborn at times and definitely needed a strong leader in the house. But if I allowed you in our house she accepted that you were always allowed in. She had high prey drive and absolutely hated cats. She would chase anything out of the yard. She was an amazing dog. As a senior, she was able to bounce back from multiple surgeries easily. She shed seasonly and needed a good brushing at that time.
