Pom-A-Pug

The Pom-A-Pug is a hybrid mix of the Pomeranian and the Pug with little to no historical information available on the hybrid itself. We'll get some history, however, from what we know about the parent breeds.  The Pomeranian descends from larger Spitz-type dogs from Iceland which were used for sledding tasks.  Though it may be difficult to imagine, the early Pomeranian was a larger dog, weighing about 30 pounds, being utilized in sheep-herding activities.  There is no approximate date of origination but the larger Pomeranian breed can be traced back to the Prussian region of Pomerania (now Germany and Poland) where it was valued as a shepherding dog.  It didn't become known until about 1870 when the Kennel Club (England) recognized it.  In 1888, during a trip to France, Queen Victoria of England fell in love with a Pomeranian named Marco, a larger version of the Pomeranian.  Queen Victoria wanted the breed to be smaller and, accordingly, she is credited with breeding methods which reduced the size of the Pomeranian to that which we see today.  It remains a very popular breed in England and the United States.  It received American Kennel Club recognition in 1888.  The Pug parent breed hails from China and is said to have been developed in China at least 2,400 years ago, prior to the 6th century.  The Pug, also known as the Chinese Pug, sporting distinctive stocky bodies and prominent eyes, were quite favored by monks as well as royalty in Europe and China for companionship purposes.  The Pug breed made its way to England, where, in the 19th century, Queen Victoria took an active interest in the breed.  She is credited with getting the Kennel Club (England) established in 1873.  The Pug was recognized by the American Kennel Club 1885.  The Pom-A-Pug hybrid itself is recognized by the following organizations:  American Canine Hybrid Club, Designer Breed Registry, Designer Dogs Kennel Club, Dog Registry of America, Inc. and the International Designer Canine Registry.
