Pomapoo Breed History

The Pomapoo has little information available about her beginnings, therefore we need to look at the parent dog history to evaluate their characteristics. The Poodle is an ancient breed that originated in Germany where it is believed they were used to retrieve water fowl from the water for the hunter. The Poodle clip was designed by hunters to help the dog to swim more efficiently. They would leave large patches of hair on the leg joints to protect them from the extreme cold and sharp reeds. It was in France where they discovered the Poodle was highly intelligent and could be trained to perform, which saw Poodles star in many circus shows. There are three sizes of Poodle - the Standard Poodle who was a the hunters retriever,  the Miniature Poodle who was ideal for sniffing out truffles, and then there was the Toy Poodle who was a true companion. The smaller Poodles became popular in royal households in the 18th century. Poodles excel at agility, competitive obedience, learning tricks and retrieving. The Pomeranian originated in a region called Pomerania which is now known as Germany and Poland. This fluffy dog was developed from the ancient Spitz breeds, which is where they got their beautiful coats. They were much larger then than they are today, weighing up to 30 pounds compared to the seven pounds we see today. These elegant dogs were working dogs then; they used to herd the shepherds flocks of sheep. But as they became known they gained popularity which included many famous owners such as Marie Antoinette, Emile Zola, Mozart and Queen Victoria. It was in 1888 when Queen Victoria began breeding and showing the Pomeranian, and it was she who started breeding them down in size which made them extremely popular in England. The American Kennel Club recognised them in 1888. The Pom's talents include agility and performing tricks as well as being quite capable as a watch dog.

Pomapoo Breed Appearance

Attractive, soft and fluffy describes the Pomapoo. Their appearance can vary depending on the parent dog genetic influence but the well proportioned body, short elegant legs, small paws and dainty demeanor will be evident in your Pomapoo. They will have either a wedge shaped head like the Pom or a long narrow muzzle like the Poodle. Tails can be carried high over their back or straight. The coat can vary as well, ranging from wavy, curly or straight, and can be either short or medium in length. If you Pomapoo inherits the Poodle coat it may be hypoallergenic, which is ideal for asthma sufferers. Bright alert dark eyes and a black button nose only adds to her appeal. Whether they have the upright ears or floppy soft poodle ears, it really doesn't matter, as it is all part of a very cute attractive small dog.

Pomapoo Breed Maintenance

Grooming requirements depend on the type of coat that your Pomapoo inherits. But regardless of type, they will require a good brushing every second day to prevent tangles and to remove the shedding hair. Luckily they are not heavy shedders, so maintenance is quite easy- the brushing needed is not extensive. Her coat will benefit from a professional trim every three months, it will also help to keep the long hair from affecting her eyes. Their eyes can weep a bit so just gently wipe clean each day to prevent staining. Bathe only when needed, and use a gentle dog shampoo to protect the natural oils in her skin. They can have dental problems, so regular brushing and checking is important for oral health. That only leaves the nails to be clipped if needed, and your Pomapoo will be ready to wow all that see her.

Pomapoo Temperament

The Pomapoo is a delightful small dog who exhibits a happy outlook on life and a willingness to please. Devoted to the owner and family, they are true companion dogs who need to be with their people most of the time. While they are usually outgoing and welcome new people, some Pomapoo's may have the Pomeranian tendency to be a bit wary of strangers and be a reserved. Early socialisation is important to bring out the best in this little dog. Mixing with other dogs and people when young will produce a dog that is confident and relaxed. They are intelligent dogs who will respond well to training, especially if it is backed with positive reinforcement and treats. Quick to learn, they pick up new tricks quickly and love to show off what they have learned. Rarely aggressive, they make ideal family pets. They adore children and will interact happily with them for hours. These dogs are house dogs, they are not happy being left outside and will develop behavioral problems like barking and digging if left alone. They want to be inside with you, preferably on your lap. The Pomapoo can adapt to a house and yard as long as you share it with them. These small dogs love water, and will happily jump in and out of a pool all day long if one is available. They adapt to most weather and are generally a well rounded happy dog that is a pleasure to own. Cute, fluffy and a bundle of fun, the Pomapoo is a good pick for families and singles alike.

Pomapoo Activity Requirements

The Pomapoo is a laid back sort of dog, they will happily follow you around, resting closely to you when you are stationary. They adapt well to apartment living as these small dogs don't need a lot of room. But they will still benefit from a daily walk. This is important for socialising and mental stimulation. If you make training fun and provide positive reinforcement, this little dog will be eager to please and will need fewer repetitions to learn a new trick. They love to play with toys, fetch the ball  or just have a wrestle and tug of war. Children will adore this moving soft toy who is only to happy to play with them as well as become partners in mischief and crime! Like all dogs they are best with a strong leader who keeps them in line and who they can respect.

We got Molly at 9 weeks and she has grown into a beautiful girl very spoilt and can be a bit disobedient at times if it doesnt suit her. Very loving and really loves being pampered. Loves her morning walks and gets plenty exercise and loves her cuddly bed. She naps in the morning but is pretty active rest of the day always wants to be involved with what we are doing? Loves the garden too. Sleeps I’m her own bed all night.

My pomapoo is very playful and has never been aggressive with any human. She does well with kids ages 3+ but is not as gentle with babies. I believe it is a jealousy trait, she wants the attention. She stays by my side and sleeps with me at night, once punished for chewing something, she doesn't do it again. I work 5 days a week 8 - 10 hours a day and do not crate her when I am away. She was ok to train, but can be very stubborn at times.

I’m loving it. He’s so sweet, and he’s become attached me so he follows me everywhere and I don’t have a problem with that. He learned quickly his tricks and he was potty trained in less than a month. He has routine he likes to keep up with for his potty breaks. He loves my little nephews and gets along with my other dogs and cats! Great dog ♥️

My poma-poo is very temperamental! I thought it was normal. She isn't very friendly and hardly likes anyone but me. She was separated from her litter really early so I think that has a lot to do with it. She loves me a lot though, she follows me every where I go. She has a lot of separation anxiety and jealousy when I'm around other dogs, babies, or my boyfriend. I am hoping to find her something that will help her calm down when I leave for work. We had to move around a lot since I've had since I was 16. So I believe that has caused some stress to her. She has maintained really good health besides her anxiety attacks she has from time to time. But she is the cutest and very very loyal.

Dog poops constantly. I mean straight up bricks. Cute dog but not sure what to do with the poop. The neighbors do not like all the landmines. City ordinance outlawed poop bags so have been using Chinese takeout boxes. Fortunately Dookie Monster loves Chinese food so we have ample supply of takeout boxes for his ample supply of poops.

Adopted him at age 11. Wonderful ray of sunshine. My cat (16 years old) adores him. He's helped me out of dark times--loss of my last dog at age 14 and loss of my husband due to heart attack. Ninja has saved me.
