Pomchi

Pomeranian
Chihuahua
Chi-Pom, Pomachi, Chiapom, Chiranian
Eager to please, lively and good natured, the Pomchi is an affectionate and loyal small dog. With natural good looks, a happy outlook on life, and an inquisitive nature, these little balls of energy and fluff are endearing. While they adore children and get along with them well, they are tiny as puppies and can be easily hurt in rough play, so always supervise children when playing with the Pomchi. It is important to note that they will not tolerate having their tail pulled or ears twisted, and dislike their food being taken away or interfered with. They demand and expect respect or may bite to drive home that point. Confident and willing to please, they take to training well as long as it is fun. These little powerhouses make good watchdogs, alerting everyone when a stranger is on their turf. Cute, adorable and slightly stubborn at times, the Pomchi is an ideal companion who will entertain you for hours.

Pomchi Breed History

The Pomchi is a recent designer breed of dog and has no known history. So we are left to analyse the parent dogs to trace their lineage. There is a disagreement as to where the Chihuahua originated - some say it was brought to Mexico by Spanish traders that hailed from China. Others state that they are a descendant of an ancient South American dog found in the 19th century which was called the Techichi. Either group could be right! During the 1850s the short hair Chihuahua was first discovered in the Mexican State of Chihuahua, where they got their name. These small dogs were brought to America during the 1800s and were registered with the American Kennel Club in 1904. The long haired Chihuahua is thought to have been a result of breeding the short hair with the Pomeranian or the Papillon. They are a confident dog, brave beyond their size, and have an alert nature much like a terrier. The Pomeranian was developed as a companion dog and originated in the province of Pomerania for which they were named. Originally a lot bigger in size (around 30 pounds) they were used for herding sheep, but become popular as a companion dog. Famous people such as Newton, Michelangelo, and Mozart enjoyed the company of the Pomeranian.  A Princess from Pomerania married an English Prince during the 18th century and brought her two Poms with her. The rich became enamoured with the Pom, especially Queen Victoria who began to breed them to be smaller, at around 12 pounds. After her death, other breeders further reduced their size and increased the color. America saw its first Pomeranian in the 1880s. Outgoing, sociable and engaging, the Pomeranian set about winning the hearts of everyone it met.

Pomchi Breed Appearance

The Pomchi is the result of crossing a Pomeranian with a Chihuahua. Small in size, the body is well proportioned and is slightly longer than it is in height. The round head has a delicate face with an elegant pointed muzzle and a dainty black nose. Teeth often meet in a scissors bite. The eyes are large and round, and the ears are erect with slight feathering on the edges. The legs are short, strong and slender, ending in small rounded paws. The coat may vary in texture and can be either single or double, depending on what parents genes have the most influence, and it can vary from short or long in length. But it should be soft, full and shiny. Elegant and regale, the Pomchi is blessed with good looks and a lovely nature.

Pomchi Breed Maintenance

The Pomchi has a long or dense hair  and is an average shedder, so that beautiful coat will require daily brushing to prevent matting. Your pet may need to visit a professional groomer to get the coat trimmed to keep it in good shape. This only needs to be done every two or three months at the most. Grooming is an ideal time to check your dog over for any cuts or abrasions, and to check the ears to ensure there  is no inflammation caused by dirt or foreign objects such as seeds. Wipe the ears out gently with a damp cloth taking care to avoid the delicate inner ear. The use of a mild dog shampoo when bathing your dog will help to prevent any allergic reaction and will maintain the natural protective skin oils. Train your dog to enjoy having his teeth brushed as these small dogs are prone to teeth problems. Start with small sessions to get them used to it, and increase from there. Making it fun with lots of praise and attention will make it easier. Lastly a slight trim of their nails is all that is needed and then they are ready to go.

Pomchi Temperament

The Pomchi is blessed with an affectionate and devoted personality that endears him to his family. But before you get to thinking that they are a mellow dog who will do anything you say, think again. This small dog can be quite stubborn and assertive and will try to rule the household if he can get away with it. They need firm rules and positive training to understand that you are the pack leader, not them. These dogs respond well to training as they are very intelligent, but training has to be fun or their attention will wander. The Pomchi likes to cuddle and enjoys all the attention you can give him. They are a house dog, and love company rather than being left alone. If they are left for several hours on their own they may develop separation anxiety and bad habits can creep into their personality. These dogs can become very vocal if left alone; this will not make you popular amongst the neighbors so if you are away a lot of the day, this little cutie is not for you. The Pomchi adapts well to apartments (as long as you have trained them to stop barking after one bark) or they will enjoy a secure yard to explore. But what really makes them happy is to be with you, helping you in all that you do and playing the clown to make you laugh.

Pomchi Activity Requirements

The Pomchi is a fairly active dog, and while he will get most of his exercise following you around the house, he will still need a daily walk. They should be trained and socialised from 12 weeks of age to ensure they develop into a well rounded dog. Walks and play time in the dog park are ways to ensure they get used to meeting other dogs and people. The Pomchi loves to play games and will respond well to challenging tasks which exercises their inquisitive nature. They are ideal for apartment living, or in a house with a yard will provide the space for them to explore. These active little dogs are quick learners and respond best to kind but firm instruction, and as long as it is fun they will be keen to please.

Very good dog. He is very timid around new people but as soon as he warms up to you he begs for attention. He wants to have a human with him at all times and always wants attention. He can be very high maintenance because of this. He prefers adults but loves to play with kids too. He has never bitten anyone but can be intimidating. He barks at literally everything outside, leafs, squirrels, wind, people walking, everything. His bark is very annoying and loud but you get used to it very quickly. He potty trained very fast, but is not good with learning tricks as his attention span is not long. Overall very good dog and very friendly once he warms up to you.

Our Pomchi is sweet, but super stubborn. It takes her a bit to stop barking as well, but she's a great alarm. She is extremely intelligent and memorizes the house routine quickly. She loves her morning and evening walks with her sister a Chihuahua Rat Terrier Mix. She can be bossy with sister, but never aggressive.

He is very very active and very friendly. Has a happy comical personality and boundless energy. Always wants to be wherever I am. Knows how to bark but rarely does it. Loves other dogs. Likes to nip and chew at my ankles and hands and clothes but hoping he outgrows it when he is done teething. He is a joyful, sweet, intelligent dog. Learned to sit the second day I had him and shake paws the first week. Doesn't like pottytraining, lol.

From the moment he was brought to me I kept him by my side. He was so small that 3 steps to the backyard was a mountain. He learned quickly how to go outside as long as someone put him at the bottom of the steps. Tug-o-war became an all time fav from his puppy days. The older he's gotten the closer we've become. He loves everyone he meets, rarely barks, and is my shadow. He likes his dog tv channel while I'm away at work, then it's out to the yard for ball toss when I get home. Pint sized and never ending ball of energy is what he is. He's more like toddler full of jumping beans than a dog.

Sophie is very affectionate. She follows me around everywhere and gets very sad when I leave for school. She loves to play catch. Her favorite part of the day is probably when she eats her food and gets to see me. She loves to cuddle and sleep with me at night. Sometimes she has a hard time learning when she has done something wrong, but if I were to try hard enough she would learn pretty quickly. I have learned that she is very motivated to learn when you have treats. She learned to sit in about 2 days. Overall, she is an amazing addition to the family.

I've read so many comments on how their pomchis are yappy but pepto hardly barks at anything except when he misses me. The best dog I've ever had. I call him my little shadow because everything I do he's right beside me in the process. The sweetest thing, kisses are always a must with him too!

Greatest dog I have ever had. He is very affectionate and follows me everywhere. He gets separation anxiety if I leave him alone so he come to work with me too :) He does bark but only when someone is around outside my house or other dogs are barking. He will also bark if he wants someone to pet him. Give them lots of socialization with other people or they may become biters. Trained easy, loves his kennel but gets to sleep with me on occasion -which is a treat for him. He can be a bit stubborn at times. Overall you cant beat this breed for a loving companion!

When she was about 4 months, she bite a lot but she stopped it over 1 years. She likes outside rather than yard and house. She also barks a lot 'till now. I want you to advice if you have a Pomchi, you should brush him/her a lot so you can prevent from shedding. My Pomchibdoesn't like bath time😅. She likes people more than dogs. So, I can call her friendly puppy but she's stubborn since my parents spoil her a lot.
