The Pomimo is a lively active little dog who makes an excellent family pet. They are great with children of all ages and very affectionate. The Pomimo is a hybrid breed and is a mix between a purebred Pomeranian and a purebred American Eskimo. They are also known as an Eskiranian and an Eskipom. Although small in size they make good watchdogs and will bark at strangers. But once they get to know people they are friendly dogs who also get on well with other dogs. They need a lot of exercise and will love going on jaunts around the neighborhood or for a run on the beach. This breed can have the longer coat of the Pomeranian or the shorter, thicker coat from the American Eskimo side and do tend to shed quite a bit. They come in a range of colors which can include orange, red, cream, white, black, blue, brown, sable and tan. They can have combinations of these colors and also come in brindle.

Pomimo Breed History

The Pomimo is a designer breed and is a mix between a purebred Pomeranian and a purebred American Eskimo. The American Eskimo originated in Germany and is a member of the Spitz family. His ancestry includes the white German Spitz, the white Keeshound, the white Pomeranian and the Volpino Italiano (white Italian Spitz). They were bred as farm dogs and initially referred to in Germany as the “Deutch Spitz,” but because of anti-German prejudice following World War 1 they were renamed “American Eskimos”. He’s a Nordic dog breed and sometimes dubbed “the dog beautiful” because of his good looks and sweet expression. In the 19th Century they performed with traveling circuses in the United States where they grew in popularity as a breed. One was famous for walking a tightrope with the Barnum and Bailey Circus. The  American Kennel Club recognized the breed in the Non-Sporting Group in 1995. The Pomeranian is the smallest member of the Spitz family of dogs. These tiny little fox-faced dogs with big personalities are descended from large sled dog breeds which weighed around 30 pounds. Queen Victoria owned a small Pomeranian and during her lifetime, the size of the breed decreased by half. She is said to have loved them so much that when she lay dying she asked that her favorite Pom named Turi stay with her. Pomeranians get their name from the province of Pomerania - the area is credited with the breeding which led to the original Pomeranian type of dog. Among the closest relatives are the Norwegian Elkhound, the Schipperke, the German Spitz, the American Eskimo and the Samoyed. The first Pom was entered into the American Kennel Club stud book in 1888 and the club officially recognized the breed in 1900. Two of the three dogs that survived the sinking of the Titanic were Poms - both escaping with their owners in lifeboats.

Pomimo Breed Appearance

Pomimo dogs are small hybrid breeds and are a cross between an American Eskimo and a Pomeranian. They are small elegant little dogs weighing up to 16 pounds with a height of up to 12 inches. Some have the longer coat from the Pomeranian parent breed while others take after the American Eskimo with a shorter, thicker coat. Common colors include orange, red, cream, white, black, blue, brown, sable and tan or brindle. Although small they are compact dogs with a sturdy body. They have fox-like faces with bright expressive brown eyes and ears that stand erect. Their tails curve back over the body.

Pomimo Breed Maintenance

Pomimos shed quite a bit and need moderate grooming to keep looking good. If they have a longer coat brushing may be needed twice a week but the shorter-haired variety should be fine with weekly brushing to keep the coat healthy. You won’t need to bath your dog very often and only ever with a dog shampoo. Try to brush your pet’s teeth daily or several times a week to prevent any dental issues. Check the ears for mats or dirt and wipe them gently with damp cotton wool if needed. The nails should be checked and trimmed when needed.

Pomeranians and American Eskimos often suffer from cataracts, patellar luxation, and hypothyroidism. Secure pet health insurance today to avoid high veterinary care costs. Pomimo Temperament

Pomimos are cheerful, affectionate pets who are excellent with children of all ages. They are very playful around children but it is always a good idea to supervise when the children are very small to prevent any rough handling of the dog. They won’t like being left alone for too long and are prone to barking if neglected. They also get on well with other dogs especially if they are socialized as pups. The Pomimo is quite territorial and will bark at strangers so are good watchdogs. But once introduced they are very friendly to everyone and will love to have as much attention as possible. They are energetic little dogs and will need physical and mental stimulation to prevent any destructive behavior like chewing or digging. They can be a little stubborn when it comes to training but plenty of positive reinforcement with a confident trainer will see results.

Pomimo Activity Requirements

These little dogs are full of energy and need regular outdoor activity to burn it off. They will love going for walks on the mountain or to the beach and will love playing games in a fenced in yard. They will enjoy ball games or chasing a frisbee or playing with the children. They can become very destructive if they don’t get enough exercise so will suit an active family. They will do well in an apartment or a house with a garden where they can run around. This breed doesn’t tolerate the heat so be careful not to exercise him in very hot weather.

Caragh is a true gift, she make everyone smile that she meets. we have been told by her vet and staff how sweet she is for being a puppy and has had some of bad luck braking her leg at 2 months old (a week after I brought her home). Everyone always said if you don't want her they would take her in a hot minute.

Tito is our little bundle of energy. He loves to cuddle, lay his head on my shoulder and be carried around. He is shy around human strangers, but friendly with other dogs. He survived Parvo, we were fortunate to see the early warning signs two days after bringing him home. A week at the vet, they saved his life and we are forever grateful. Tito follows me everywhere, room to room observing. Yes they are great “guard” dogs indeed, slowly training and with reassurance he is learning. We love his companionship, and he nurtures us just the same.

My ninja is a great doggo. He’s sweet and loves cuddles but is very playful. Especially around bed time when we make the bed he likes to play the blanket game. When we put the blankets on the bed he runs under them and lays down so it’s covering him. Then crawls back out and does it again for the next blanket. He loves children and people but barks when he hears noises to tell us. It only took a few days to potty train him. He’s an amazing doggo.

Sophie is always obedient, even when she doesn't want to. She's now completely deaf, so all interaction is with hand signals. On occasion, she will turn her head, so she can't see our commands. Happy, friendly, content, just a great addition to our family.

He loves to run around and play with my children. He is already potty trained and is learning new tricks and how to sit and stay. Best little fur ball decision we made!

We adopted bronco when he was 11 months old. He had been returned to the shelter because he was a chewer. But with some attention and the fact that there’s almost always someone in our house he never gets lonely. We got our cat almost a year ago when he was just weaned. He took that kitten under his wing and they are best buddies now. He also enjoys playing with our five-year-old. He is however much bigger than most Pomimos, he weighs about 20 lbs.

He is easily trained but does have his ditzy moments! I’m not sure if other Pomimo’s can jump but Fluff can leap over baby gates and he is only 10 lbs.

I love my Nittany Girl. She was the perfect addition to me. She’s quite stubborn being that she’s 10 months and still isn’t fully potty trained. She was very dominant at first until I had to make her submit to me. She listens when she wants, but overall I wouldn’t trade her cute self for the world. She is truly my twin in dog form. We’re the best of friends and I wouldn’t want to be woken up by anything else than her pouncing on me in the mornings.

Buddy is quite possibly the best dog in the whole world. He is kind, loving, and smart. He does bark at strangers but will love them just as quickly. Unfortunately he is aggressive towards other dogs even away from home. He was found as a stray and my family brought him home at age 5. If I could clone the handsome little guy, I would and I would give one to every family in the world. He has changed our lives for the better and made me a better person. He truly is the best boy.

Answer

Question - My pet
Question

How do I stop my 8 month old Pomeranian American Eskimo puppy to stop biting

Answer
I'm sorry to hear your pup is biting. How we address this depends on the type of biting. If they are nipping when playing, we should say a firm 'No' and re-direct to e.g. a tug toy. Do ensure they're getting plenty of physical stimulation and have an outlet for their energy. However, if they bite when e.g. being anxious, territorial or resource guarding, this is a different kettle of fish. This sort of behaviour needs to be nipped in the bud and I would encourage you to seek the advice of a behaviouralist ASAP. Best of luck!
