Presa Canario
The Presa Bulldog is a strong, and well built hybrid breed that was created from the combination of the Perro de Presa Canario and the English Bulldog. As can be imagined, a Mastiff breed and a Bulldog mixture is bound to make a very sturdy and intimidating hybrid. The Presa Bulldog is indeed an impressive figure that tends to be attentive, self confident, and obedient with a strong suspicion towards strangers. Thanks to the loving, playful nature of the Bulldog, however, he isn't all gunpowder and lead but, there is no doubt that the Presa Bulldog requires an owner who is willing to put the time into training and raising the dog correctly. This way, no unwanted personality traits rise to the surface and become a serious problem. The Presa Bulldog, with his work dog background and throaty bark, is perfect for those who are looking for a strong and dependable guard dog. He will not hesitate to protect his family, as the Presa Canario breed has a very strong bond and loyalty to those who raise him. While this loyalty is a fantastic trait, it can become an issue if left to develop unchecked; this is due to the fact that both parent breeds have a tendency towards an aggression that was necessary for the jobs they were created for. Early socialization and training are key to keeping these tendencies at bay and this large dog docile and calm.

Presa Bulldog Breed History

While the Presa Bulldog hasn't had a lot of time to develop an origin story yet (due to coming about in the early 2000's), his parent breeds certainly have. In order to learn more about what makes this hybrid special and why he may have been created, we need to take a look at the Bulldog and the Perro de Presa Canario individually. Their history and creation stories will give us a sneak peak into what people may have been looking for when they decided to combine the two in order to get the Presa Bulldog. Let's start with the Perro de Presa Canario.  It is thought that this breed's history dates clear back to the 15th and 16th centuries, and that they may have descended from the mastiff-type breeds that were brought over to the Canary islands by the Spanish explorers. Most likely, the dogs that were included in the making of the Presa Canario were Iberian Presa (Mastiff type) along with Bulldog breeds. One of the final breeds to be added into the Presa Canario mix was the Bardino Majorero, which is a type of sheepdog, who contributed to the intelligence and courage of the breed. With combinations such as these, the Presa Canario was created to work as a guardian of family farms against stray or wild dogs, as well as a wrangler for livestock.  As can be imagined, that type of power and intimidation wasn't going to be set to live peacefully on the farm. People began to play the Presa Canario in dog-fighting events which inevitably caused the population of these dogs to decrease significantly over just a few years. It wasn't until the fights were prohibited and the Presa Canario was once again designated to only farm work, that they began to make a comeback. In the 1970's people began to take more interest in the Presa Canario as the idea of a strong, confident, loyal, and calm breed was very appealing as a guard dog for family homes. The breed has been popular ever since and was accepted into the American Kennel Club in 1996. The Bulldog is another breed that has been around for a very long time, at the very least 500 years. While you may picture the small dogs that we know today running around along the old-time streets of little villages in England, the earlier Bulldogs were actually very tall with a habit of being extremely ferocious. Such ferocity and height were necessary for the Bulldog to accomplish the task he was created for; bull baiting. This sport was not only for entertainment among the people, but also had a very important purpose. The Bulldog would grab the bull by the nose in order to hold him in place for situations such as castration or breeding. As can be imagined, such a job was not for a weak dog, so the Bulldog was strong, fierce, and fearless. While the Bulldog's appearance remained unchanged for many years, it was eventually altered due to a different form of entertainment that arose; dog shows. As the popularity of dog showing grew, the Bulldog shrunk. He was bred and rebred until the traits of short legs,  a massive head, and a thick, stocky body were obtained. Along with his appearance, the Bulldog's personality was altered as well. Gone was the intense ferocity and fearlessness of the past, now Bulldogs were kind and courageous with a laid-back yet dignified nature. Eventually, the Bulldog made his way to the United States where the American Kennel Club accepted him as an official breed in 1886. He was a successful show dog and loyal family companion then and remains that way to this very day.

Presa Bulldog Breed Appearance

The Presa Bulldog, being a hybrid breed, is going to combine the physical traits from both the Presa Canario and the Bulldog. Because of this, his appearance can vary greatly even within the same litter; from fur color to body structure. More often than not the Presa Bulldog is going to be a large dog with a massive head, rectangle body with squared shoulders, medium to short legs, and large, intelligent eyes. His ears are folded and loose, just like both parent breeds, and his skin will be slightly wrinkled around the face. In summary, the Presa Bulldog will usually have the body type of the Presa Canario, with a face that more closely resembles traits of the Bulldog. His coloring can vary greatly and his fur is short, thus making the Presa Bulldog a breed that prefers warmer climates.

Presa Bulldog Breed Maintenance

The Presa Bulldog is a very low maintenance hybrid due to their short coat and non-existent doggy odor. While he does tend to shed quite often, especially around the season changes, brushing at least once a week will be enough to keep the shedding to a minimum and the coat looking healthy. Bathe your Presa Bulldog whenever he gets especially dirty, but other than that, there is no need for frequent bathing. Because this breed has folded over ears, and loose skin around his face, these are areas that will need a bit more attention than everywhere else. Clean the ears often and always thoroughly dry them after bathing or swimming to keep away any potential ear irritations or infections that could come about from leftover moisture. Wipe the face down if you notice the wrinkles getting dirty from food, but otherwise, this area should remain clean for the most part. Lastly, trim your dog's nails every few weeks or so to keep them at a healthy length and prevent any excessive scratching that may occur when the dog jumps up.

Presa Bulldog Temperament

This particular hybrid breed is definitely not for the faint of heart. He is large, determined, strong-willed, and tends to have a low tolerance around children and other pets. While these are a few traits that need to be considered carefully before purchasing the Presa Bulldog, there are also a lot of very good traits that make up this breed as well. He is a well-responsive, loyal, affectionate, intelligent, easy-going, and playful dog who loves his family more than anything; making him the perfect fit for those who want an easy to train guard dog. A lot of these traits are thanks to the Bulldog, who's more clownish personality off-sets the more serious side of the Presa Canario. With both of these sturdy and strong breeds put together, there is no doubt that the Presa Bulldog is one that will require a lot of attention and training right from the start. Homes with small children and other animals will want to think carefully about purchasing this breed; however, with early socialization and the chance to grow up around children or other animals, the Presa Bulldog will have a better adaptability around them. Overall, although he may not be a good fit for the beginner dog owner, with the right person, the Presa Bulldog is an excellent companion who will love you forever, guard you with his life, and enjoy all kind of different activities; from a light jog to a comfy nap.

Presa Bulldog Activity Requirements

Due to the fact that the Bulldog is a low energy breed while the Presa Canario is a more active breed, the Presa Bulldog is going to be somewhere in the middle. A couple hours of physical activity a day will be plenty to keep this breed healthy and happy. On top of this, it is important to remember that as he is rather intelligent and possesses a work dog background, the Presa Bulldog is going to need a good amount of mental stimulation as well to tire him out. This can be accomplished through training and challenging toys that cause him to think  in order to solve the toy; whether it's for treats or a smaller toy hidden inside. While the Presa Bulldog is very easy-going and actually adapts quite well to living in smaller environments (such as an apartment or townhouse), he is a larger breed; so, activities such as a short jog, long walk, or playing around in the yard with you is going to be very important in keeping his body healthy and fit.

King has been the greatest addition and although I’ve loved my fur babies before he has been a great dog. Easily trained, great with the kids (I have 3 boys) and great family protector. Really as he is still young very much a big baby, loves other dogs and people when I say it’s okay, he loves getting the attention at the park as he’s a very beautiful boy! But loves being active and out with the family. He doesn’t shed much and stays super soft. Overall good health as well - he’s still young but so far no issues! Teething been fun as they def need help with good Chew toys and bones to soothe but he is such a great dog!!!

what is very funny is that I wrote certain names of races on free paper (sutout moloss with smooth hair) well before their existence what was the case for the presa bulldog this writing dates before the year 2000 circa 1995 by searching on the bull & terrier red nose that I knew the 1st red nose with 1 size of 53 at the withers so to also say that the bull & terrier even rednose possessed 1 sizes already important and included many other names (s ) and other recognized nicknames, ➕ for 1 bureaucratic reason, anyway the mastiff especially with smooth hair and all the lines of the bull & terrier like the red nose are my favorites

We got king when he was just 8 weeks old die to his mom dying at birth, as mom was English bulldog and dad was pure 180lb presa canario. King was the runt a beautiful brindle and good temperament. Training was quick - very intelligent socialized a lot early and we have 3 boys and a cat. He is very loyal to the family and has amazing guarding instincts. Can be very protective and we are cautious with strangers around the home. Grooming is easy however with the bulldog mix he is sensitive to certain foods and is prone to allergies, close Attention to his paws and ears. If trained early these dogs are amazing! He is by far one of my favorite breeds now due to our need for a protector and guarded of our home with our boys. Also his medium energy allows for great family activities and also chill time inside. He is exceptional dog.
