Siberian Husky
The Pyrenees Husky is a hybrid dog. His parent breeds are the majestic Great Pyrenees and the  intuitive Husky. He is a medium to large sized dog. He is the descendant of powerful working dogs, so expect toughness from this gentle pup. He will fit in with an active family,  especially if your family enjoys long hikes. He makes a great rescue dog and therapy dog. He is highly intelligent, and quite affectionate as well. However, they can be somewhat stubborn. They like to figure things out on their own, and this willfulness can make them difficult to deal with from time to time. However, patient persistence is key.

Pyrenees Husky Breed History

The Pyrenees Husky is a hybrid dog that is rather rare, so very little is known about the history of this particular breed. However, we can study the parent breeds in order to understand more about the hybrid breed. The Great Pyrenees is an ancient breed. It hails from the Pyrenees Mountains between France and Spain. The ancestors of the breed are thought to have arrived in the area around 3000 BC. He was developed to help shepherds with their herds. In 1675, King Louis XVI declared the Great Pyrenees the Royal Dog of France. The first Great Pyrenees came to North America via Newfoundland. There, he was crossbred with the Newfoundland dog to create the Landseer Newfoundland. World War II almost saw the extinction of the Great Pyrenees. However, several had been shipped to the United States, and those dogs were used to replenish the breed and make it the breed that is known today. The Husky is also an ancient breed. He was imported to Alaska in 1908 for use as a sled dog during the Gold Rush. They were also used  in a 408-mile  dogsled race known as the All-Alaska Sweepstakes. In 1930, Russia closed the Siberian border, so no more Siberian Huskies were imported to the United States. However, those here in the United States were the foundation for the American Husky. In 1930, the American Kennel Club first registered the Siberian Husky.

Pyrenees Husky Breed Appearance

The Pyrenees Husky will be a mixture of both parent breeds. He is a medium  to large sized dog. He will have the thick coat of his parent breeds, but his coloring will vary. He may be white all over, or he may have the black markings of the Husky. These markings may also be gray. His snout is usually long, and his nose is black. His eyes may be blue like the Husky parent breed. They may also be an amber color. The ears may be erect like the Husky parent, or they may be floppy like the Great Pyrenees parent. If this is the case, you will need to take extra care with the ears during grooming. He will likely have long hair and a double coat which is thick and waterproof.

Pyrenees Husky Breed Maintenance

The Pyrenees Husky will require a good deal of maintenance. He will have a thick double coat which will require weekly brushing to prevent matting. He will not only shed throughout the year, but he will also "blow" his coat twice a year. During the spring and fall,  brush him daily to prevent excessive hair on your clothing and furniture. Depending upon the type of ear he inherits, you may also need to pay special attention to his ears. Should he inherit the floppy ears of the Great Pyrenees parent, you will need to clean his ears out weekly using a cotton ball and warm water. Be sure to check for foul odor and redness as this is indicative of an infection. Brush his teeth two or three times a week to prevent tartar build-up and bad breath. However, to prevent tooth decay, brush his teeth daily.  Trim his nails every two or three weeks should they not wear down on their own.

The Pyrenees Husky can suffer from a number of potentially expensive health issues. Secure pet health insurance today to avoid high veterinary care costs. Wag! Wellness lets pet parents compare insurance plans from leading companies like Figo and Spot. Find the “pawfect” plan for your pet in just a few clicks!

Pyrenees Husky Temperament

The Pyrenees Husky is a highly intelligent and affectionate dog. However, he is a worker at heart, and he must have proper activity in order not to become destructive. While the Great Pyrenees is more docile, the Husky can become destructive when bored. The hybrid's tendencies will depend on the more dominant parent breed. He will be somewhat difficult to train, but persistence is key. The Pyrenees Husky can be rebellious at times. He is not suited for an inexperienced dog owner. Some experts recommend obedience training for the breed. Be aware that he may wander. Another tip - the Pyrenees Husky can get out of their collars and can easily break tie chains. You will need to plan for this should you decide to acquire a Pyrenees Husky.

Pyrenees Husky Activity Requirements

The Pyrenees husky is a fairly active dog. He is also very curious, and, when left to his own devices, he may dig or jump over fences under six feet in height to get out and explore. To keep him from experiencing boredom, take him for hikes, long jogs around the neighborhood, and, if you have the proper outdoor area, allow him to spend some time outdoors. Again, remember that he proves to be a bit of an escape artist, so only put him in a fenced-in area he is not able to climb out of or dig out of. Trips to the dog park should only come after some obedience training. He has a tendency to wander, but an older (more mature) Pyrenees Husky will be more likely to settle down and enjoy the dog park. Although he is built for the outdoors, he is happiest inside with his family.

I love my girl. She was very difficult to train, as she is extremely single-minded, and went through a period around month 6 where she got mouthy and a bit destructive. However, with consistent training and patience she has really settled down, is a true sweetheart and loves playing with all people and animals she meets on our walks. I take her out for at least two 30-45 minute walks each day, and groom her frequently. She has an incredibly unique personality, as she loves running free and independently, but also enjoys just hanging out with me. When she's drowsy, sometimes she'll pick herself up and flop down closer to me, even if she wasn't that far away. She can also be a bit sassy and talks back to me once in a while, but that's part of her charm :)

We have had Luna for a week now, she is very timid with anything new, places or people, at first. She is a fast learner, but definitely had the husky sass. I plan on taking her to an obedience class to hopefully help with her training. And so far, we go on 3-4 short walks a day to help with her high activity level. She is crazy and has earned her full name. Luna Tic.

Castiel (Cas for short) is an extremely smart and extremely sweet puppy. He learns rapidly and can be scheming and sneaky but he's very intuitive and eager to please us as well so it's a great combination. He has some anxieties -- doesn't like car rides and vomits, doesn't like to feel stuck (he got stuck under our she'd once and made himself pass out from stress before we could get him dug out). He trains rapidly, loves his belly scratched, and prefers people food to dog food. He likes to chew and loves to play with his kids. He is very loving and just the best dog for us! Can't wait til he is a full grown dog. He is half husky and half pyrenees and is mostly black with white paws, white belly, and a white stripe on his nose. He's absolutely beautiful

Ace is one of a litter of 11 Great Pyrskies as we call them. His Dad was a pure bred Siberian Husky and momma is a pure bred Great Pyrenees. 4 of the litter have the Great Pyr fur type, the rest have the husky type. We found half the puppies have one blue and one brown eye, with the rest mostly blue eyes and two with brown eyes. 2 puppies look almost entirely Great Pyrenees, one has blue eye/brown eye combo though. Many have the extra dew claws. At 8 weeks all still have floppy ears, but about half look like they will develop standing ears eventually. They are talkers, growlers, barkers and very playful at this point. They love all people they have ever met, and a few of them have livered noses with pink as well as black on them, so the information up above about possible nose color is inaccurate - there can be some pink too.

Charlee (Char for short) is a loveable brat. She is right in that I'm a toddler stage so she is very destructive, but we found that usually just means she wants to go on a walk or play rough. She also demands attention at all times, escpecially if there is someone walking by the house, so we always know if we have a visitor, or someone breaking in. She loves to play at all times and will even grab the brush and run away with it just to play instead of getting her fur brushed. All in all, I love my pup and am proud I got her.

She started off as a total nightmare as I've only ever owned labs and initially was just taking care of her for a friend, but through time spent together along with research and many (failed) attempts to keep her entertained she eventually saw me as the alpha of the pack, calmed down and is definitely one of the most intelligent and loving dogs I've ever felt. For first time husky owners, please do your research and do not get one if you do not have the time for it. Other than that you will absolutely fall in love with their personality and talkative nature.

So far he has been a chewer, I mean literally everything if fair game. He is social, and brave, as well as curious. Duke has so far greeted my horses, jumped into an alpine lake, chewed his way through several cords, sandals, and socks : ). He is vocal and is affectionate. Definitely has an independent sense of what he will and won't, but he's coming around. I also have a 7 yr old Bull Mastiff and Duke loves to try and get a rise out of her. All in all, a wonderful, intelligent dog.

he is a super fast learner and he's so calm affectionate and caring. he has a little separation anxiety and I don't know if that's because he is a ASPAC rescue dog from local shelter, or if that's just who he is. I'm trying to teach him not to bark or get upset when I leave. he is stubborn at commands that he knows which can be frustrating at time. definitely a husky trait. but he listens very very well when I am out and about with him i.e in stores and such. Great with other dogs too. He is very controllable and brilliant. just stubborn. I love him! he is the perfect dog. I don't know how he ended up in a shelter.

Tizzy was the best dog I have ever had. I have had 2 purebred huskies, a Rottweiler, Labs through out my life but he was the best. We stumbled across him at a pet store one day looking at the husky puppies. I fell in love with him instantly. I was heart broken when we had to say goodbye due to progressive bone cancer. with in a few days he went from his playful energetic self to not being able to walk. I don't even want another dog unless it's the same breed and looks like him. I wish I could attach a pic. He looked like a husky with the ears, snout and blue eyes. But he had long thick straight white fur.

Honey is the sweetest, active and most vocal dog we’ve ever had. She’s so affectionate and sweet. She’s very good with our cats, she loves them and loves my parents dog ( boxer/pit ). She’s extremely friendly with people and animals, but she gets jealous lol. She is a chewer though! We have to keep everything put up! She destroys shoes, Xbox controllers and whatever she can get a hold of! She doesn’t bark or howl but she’ll a-roo all day lol..she try’s to talk in grumbles all day long like she’s trying to have a conversation lol, she keeps us entertained. Easiest dog I’ve ever potty trained. She’s very intelligent but stubborn lol.

We had started training with Charlie at about 16 weeks being weary of the stubbornness of the breed. He caught on quite quickly but will respond at his own pace. Initially he seemed very independent, but has become very attached to me, sitting on the couch with me, following me around. I feel like he will never be an off leash dog due to his wandering nature. Loves treats not so big on his kibble. He is an amazing dog, smart, affectionate but not needy, we couldn't be happier.

Mika was a rescue from 1500 miles away. We saw her on Petfinder.com and fell in love with her. Her training went well and she's becomming the big lover of the house. She cannot get enough play with anyone........big dogs......little dogs.....cats.....humans. She has a strong prey instinct and will go after squirrels, rabbits, birds......but she just watches deer (to see if they want to play). She moved from Texas in October 2019 to Washington state. Her while coat is turing darker. Is that a winter coat growth?

I don’t think I can find the words to describe the companionship, loyalty, and love from such an amazing friend. She’s been my best friend and my princess for 13years. She’s loving and playful, but can be stubborn and mischievous. Yet she’s always been an old soul. As much as she loves to explore and play, she’s content cuddling on the couch or in bed on her terms of course and once she’s had enough (or gets to hot) she retires to one of her beds. She loves being outside weather it’s hot or cold. She loves the snow but hates thunder storms. She was so good with my niece(12) and nephew(13) when they were born right up until now (they are the same age). She’s always been very protective, and when she has a feeling about a person weather good or bad, I listen to her instinct as she’s never been wrong. She takes a little to warm up to new people but once she does, she’s all love and cuddles. She can also be pushy at times and when she wants something she will let you know, she’s also a talker. Usually it’s low grumbly sounds almost as if she’s purring, but she can be right out vocal and tell you exactly what’s what. But all in all amazing companions and the best best friend anyone could ask for.

First off I have never had a more loveable dog, she is absolutely the best companion you could ask for and highly intelligent. She's a very playful and hyper dog but very friendly and well behaved even as a puppy she didn't tear anything up. She is very vocal and likes to talk, good about letting you know if she needs something. She does need quite a lot of love and attention lol. As far as trainable she was extremely easy to train and is a very fast learner, however that husky stubbornness still likes to come out from time to time. Overall I love my baby and I couldn't have asked for a better dog if you want the most loveable pup that acts like a little person this breed is it. Lol
