The Pyrenees Pit is a large designer dog, a deliberate crossbreed between two loyal and powerful canines, with strong natural guarding instincts, the American Pit Bull Terrier and the Great Pyrenees. While the resulting hybrid is an extremely loyal and protective animal, it is also likely to be rather independent and strong-willed, and training can be difficult. While this is an athletic dog, just an hour a day of moderate to vigorous exercise is usually sufficient to keep this animal fit and happy, and even those that grow the thick, double-layered coat characteristic of the Great Pyrenees should only require grooming a few times a week.

Pyrenees Pit Breed History

The Pyrenees Pit, also known as the Pitenees, is a newer designer dog, an intentional hybrid of the American Pit Bull Terrier, a loyal and powerfully built dog with a strong protective instinct, and the Great Pyrenees, an attentive guardian with the ability to think independently. The Great Pyrenees dog is an extremely old breed of dog, with a mysterious past. While nobody really knows for certain where these large white dogs originally came from, we do know that they have been working alongside the shepherds of the Pyrenees mountains for thousands of years to keep sheep safe from the bears, wolves, and lynx that used to be common in the area. As the larger predators became less common in the area, the dogs became more frequently utilized as guardians of property or jailer's dogs and were so valued that they were dubbed the Royal Dog of France by Dauphin Louis XIV in the 1600s. While the modern Great Pyrenees may live happily as a family pet, just as many are employed as guardians of people or property, and as the larger predators are returning to the Pyrenees mountains, these loyal guardians are seeing a resurgence of popularity in their home territory as well. The American Pit Bull Terrier is, ironically, a breed that is not recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club, although it is recognized by the United Kennel Club in England. The American Staffordshire Terrier, as recognized by the AKC, is such a close match to the American Pit Bull Terrier that some individuals are able to be recognized as American Pit Bull Terriers in England and also as American Staffordshires in the United States, although the breed standard for the Pit Bull allows for a greater range in both size and color than the Staffordshire. This particular crossbreed is still either new or rare enough that it is not listed with the majority of hybrid or designer dog clubs in the United States, and is only registerable with the Dog Registry of America.

Pyrenees Pit Breed Appearance

This crossbreed is typically a large animal that is very slightly longer than it is tall, although Pyrenees Pit dogs are usually quite a bit smaller than their parent breed of Great Pyrenees. They are well-muscled and broad-boned with wide, sturdy heads, and broad, deep muzzles. Those that lean towards the Pit Bull will generally have a stockier build, shorter muzzles, and broader heads than those that more closely resemble the Pyrenees. Their eyes will usually come in shades of dark brown and can be either round or almond-shaped, and they have short somewhat triangular ears that can be carried either low and close to the skull like the Great Pyrenees or carried high in a rose or half-prick configuration like the American Pit Bull. The coat of the Pyrenees Pit can vary quite a bit between individual dogs as the coats of the parent breeds are very different from one another. Some dogs may favor the American Pit Bull heritage, with a short, single-layer coat, while others may inherit the winter ready double-layer coat of the Great Pyrenees, consisting of a soft, thick undercoat covered with a layer of long thick hair that is coarser in texture.

Pyrenees Pit Breed Maintenance

The Pyrenees Pit only needs occasional baths, as the coats of both the Pit Bull and the Pyrenees tend to shed dirt naturally. The brushing requirements for this dog will vary somewhat depending on which coat they inherit. Those that inherit the double coat of the Great Pyrenees, no matter what length it ends up being, should not be brushed daily as this often leads to the ends of the hair breaking off, but they do require combing and brushing every two or three days to avoid the formation of tangles or mats and to remove dead hair from the coat. Those that inherit the short, single layer coat of the Pit Bull will often be able to keep the coat healthy and shiny with weekly grooming sessions employing either a slicker brush or a grooming glove.

Pyrenees Pits often suffer from hip dysplasia. Secure pet health insurance today to avoid high veterinary care costs. Our pet insurance tool lets you compare plans from leading companies like Figo and Spot. Find the “pawfect” plan for your pet in just a few clicks!

Pyrenees Pit Temperament

While this hybrid is typically affectionate and supremely loyal to their family or charges, they may be more aloof or suspicious towards others and they may require more socialization than average in order to be comfortable in diverse situations. While these dogs are typically good with children in their own family, they may inherit a tendency to be overzealous in protecting them from perceived threats. All interactions between these powerful animals and children or other animals should be closely supervised, especially if the animal or child is not well known to the canine. Both of the parent breeds of the Pyrenees Pit were bred to be strong-willed, with the ability to think independently when needed. While these are useful traits when guarding sheep from large predators as Pyrenees are built to do, or for driving bulls to market like the ancestors of the Pit Bull, they can make obedience training much more challenging. The best results can be achieved through early training that focuses on consistency and positive reinforcement.

Pyrenees Pit Activity Requirements

While these dogs are quite large, and often have copious muscles, they don’t require quite as much exercise as many other breeds with similar athleticism. An hour or so a day of moderate to vigorous exercise daily is usually plenty to keep this hybrid healthy and fit. It may be advisable to not exercise your canine during the hottest part of the day on hot days as dogs with short, light-colored coats may be more prone to sunburn and skin cancer, while dogs with the thicker, double-layer coats may be more susceptible to overheating. The Pyrenees Pit requires more room than most apartments can provide, and is happiest when they have a larger home to stretch out in.

Very friendly, likes to be outdoors which will be a challenge in the winter with his shortish coat. Ours has the demeanor and grace of the Pyrenees which we have had in the past. He can really move and is agile on his feet, but only in spurts. He is a resource guarder and vocalizes exactly like our Pyrenees did when other male dogs approach. I am not sure what the pit bull addition is really supposed to accomplish? Not sure what the bite force comparison is between the breeds. But our Pyrenees boys were 120 and 140lbs while Mr. Brendan is probably topping out around 90 ish pounds. Estimated. He is very protective of us and any children without being threatening. He just maintains a presence. He was also very protective of his puppies, while being sweet to people, patrolling the yard in large circles around the property and coming back to lay by them. Likes to roam a bit but never strays far. Always comes when I call, but never lets me catch him :-). He has a very deep, imposing, royal warning vocalization if predators are near. Or like I said if a male dog approaches his dog run. Seems to understand that I do not want him chasing deer. He likes cats and is very gentle with them. We did not train him to do that. He roams MUCH LESS than our full Pyrenees did - male or female. His coat is much easier to wash and dry compared to our Pyrenees. Our ‘neesies’ were a challenge because you don’t want to shave them if possible to avoid it, as their coats never fully recover if you do. But some years we had to. And I had trouble with hot spots on our Pyrenees in summer if we did not shave them. Usually on their necks, which would get drenched from drool and panting after they matured at 3 years of age - also if we didn’t spend HOURS drying them with high powered blow dryers after a shower.

Jagermeister loves our 2 young children and is very protective of them. He watches over our small flock of 6 hens and once in a while has fun chasing them. He never attempts to harm them, just likes to annoy them a bit. Jager gets along well with our cat and does not seem prey-driven, unless he sees a squirrel. For some reason, he just hates squirrels. He quickly learned how to sit, stay, and give a paw, however learning to come when called, walk calmly next to his walker, and stop at the boarders of our fence-less yard has been a challenge. We purchased an e-collar and when we gently buzz/vibrate the collar, he responds very well. We have seldom used the "shock" element of the collar. Overall, Jager is a very well behaved boy for an un-neutered 12 month old. We do intend to neuter him between 18-24 months, but in the meantime, he is enjoying a healthy and loving "childhood" and we are certain will develop into a loyal, protective, and affectionate adult dog. We love our Jager!

Given to us at 2 months, he’s growing fast and is extremely active with lots of naps. He’s such a sweet pup but very mouthy. I’ve got the scratches to prove it. He loves his human dad and goes quiet and into his kennel to sulk when his dad leaves for work. After a while he’ll come out to play with me, his human mom. Being handicapped, I find it challenging to walk him. Like walking a bucking bronco! Lol! And he protests loudly when he feels I’m too slow! Very comical he is and talks back when I tell him no! We love our silly boy😁

She is a highly intelligent dog but not to the point where her curiosity gets the better of her. She loves the snow and cold despite her short hair.Very affectionate and loving coming up to give "hugs" all of the time. She is very protective over children, but her bark is much worse than her bite. She has a scary and very deep bark, which acts as a good deterant for home security. She is incredibly sweet.

Juno runs and jumps without realizing her size. She is intended to be a Nanny dog of a special needs child on 10 acre wooded homestead. She is learning, and is extremely aware of where her boy is all the time. She plops on top of him when he rests on the couch, sits at his feet, or sleeps in front of him, so that if he gets up she can monitor him. She can be alone in a kennel for hours, and when we come home she can enthusiastically jump and scare children. She is very big, muscular, brindle coat, sweet, and goofy. She thinks for herself, solves problems. She can be redirected easily. She treats the children like they are her herd, and she body checks (not bite) them away from what she thinks are dangers: the pond, farm equipment, cliffs, birds she is suspicious of, haha. She is not mean, or aggressive. She herds the livestock back into their pens. She is a giant, sweet, loyal dog. She can eat off the kitchen table with all four feet on the ground now, at 7 months old.

We got him as a puppy rescue. He is very affectionate and loving with our family. He is not very social with people he is not familiar with that come to our house and aggressively barks at them. We are trying to hold him on a leash but he is inconsistent with his aggression. He will approach a stranger on a walk and randomly bark and almost nip at their hands (adults and children alike). The adaption agency had him mislabeled as a puppy and we only found out his bread after dna testing. We spend a lot time walking him and socializing him as a puppy (walks, dog parks, etc.). We have a fenced in yard and he bit our neighbor's son who went too close to our fence. Would only recommend this breed to someone who is willing to take extreme care and time properly training this extremely protective and unpredictable breed.

Rescued from shelter at 4-5 months old, DNA tested for heritage, height 23" and 65 lbs at around 1 year old, calm sweet nature. Willow is a sweet gentle girl who loves everyone she comes in contact with including people and other dogs. She is very calm and gentle with children and seems attracted to them. Obedience training was a bit of a challenge due to somewhat stubborn independent nature, but with professional help she is now the perfect lady when we are out and about around town. She seems to bark a lot outside at night only, not much during the day. She has a tendency to wander off if left unattended without fencing to contain her. She prefers cool weather over warm and seems to enjoy being outside in rain and snow, which can be challenging for us as doggie door allows free access to fenced yard. Her coat is maybe halfway between Pit and Pyr, not short but not long or double either, more like that of a Labrador Retriever really but maybe a bit longer. She has very loose skin especially around the neck area. She was labeled a lab mix by the shelter, but DNA shows no lab at all. The biggest percentage shown was Pit and Pyr, with a small percentage listed only as "breed groups".

Our little girl is an absolute sweetheart. She fits in perfectly with our active lifestyle. Very affectionate with everyone (adult and children) she meets and playful with all dogs. We have only seen one instance when her hackles came up and that was somebody entering a room in our home with a halloween mask on. She went from cuddled up between us on the couch to standing in front of us in a protection mode. As soon as the mask came off, hackles dropped, tail wagged and the game was on. We love her to pieces and she gives it all right back to us.

Overall she is a great loving dog. Learns well when she wants to, other times she is just not having it. With me and my son she will listen and behave, with my roommate she doesn't listen well and will pee in the house around him if I am not home. She has exceptional hearing and will bark as the breed tends too, going back to my roommate he dislikes her barking at noises.

Dewey has been a handful to say the least. I got him at 6wks and by 8wks he was potty trained, could sit, lay down and shake with both paws. He is super intelligent... almost too much so. He knows when he’s being called, whether he listens or not depends on his mood 😅. He loving, protective and happy go lucky most of the time. He doesn’t particularly do well with kids or strangers though. He is very suspicious of strangers and while he loves kids he’s prone to jump all over them and to be too rambunctious for them because he loves them too much. He will protect his family with his life but if you aren’t on his “good guy” list I suggest you keep your distance. I love him a ton and the only real issues I’ve had are in regards to keeping him on our property. He can scale any fence and is up all night barking per usual Great Pyrenees behavior but I knew that he’d be that way when I got him. Luckily, we live in the boonies down in central Alabama. He’s an amazing dog but he requires a very STRONG owner with particular living circumstances to be comfortable. Would not recommend this breed to a novice or inexperienced dog owner.

She's my best friend. She is very lazy at home, but when we leave she is eager to walk and discover things and meet new people (we walk around 4 miles per day in the city). She loves going to the dog park, the beach, and to see the sea lions at the pier and is great with all dogs - big and small - and 99% of the people that she meets. She learns very quickly (sit, shake, etc) but will not move a paw if she doesn't feel like moving which isn't often. She constantly surprises me with her intelligence and her memory of places. She's a very sweet dog and I couldn't be luckier to have adopted her.

She takes more after the Pyrenees side as far as size . 80 lbs at just over 6 1/2 months. Good with people and other dogs. Can get a little over zealous with smaller dogs. Loving personality but also a stubborn streak. Never barks at other dogs or people. Only at us when playing. She is a lot of fun.

She is patient and will share her food and treats with anything. Extremely smart and loving. I couldn't imagine life without her in our family! I know when the kids are out exploring in the woods with her they are as safe as can be and the chickens are safe also ...

My girl is just about 16 weeks old. She is extremely affectionate to those she knows and loves. She is even very playful when being introduced to strangers. (Of myself or my fiancé introduce her) But if someone walks by she does not know, she gets very defensive and territorial! She will let out a low, deep growl and bark. She is extremely nervous of others, but once she goes around them for a bit she is great! She is 27lbs so far, and quite tall!

He's an amazing dog, he is quite the chewer though and he has a lot of separation anxiety already. He loves being in the center of attention, he's full of energy all the time. Loves to cuddle. When my newborn son starts crying he goes over to check on him, it amazes me at even such a young age that he's already a loyal and protective dog.

This guy has been a hand full from the start. Definitely has separation anxiety. Training him to pee outside has been very difficult. We got him at 11 weeks old from a rescue and he was peeing every 15 to 30 minutes on the floor. We had to start limiting the amount of water he was drinking to try and get it under control. We had him neutered when was 13 months old, vet said he’s a healthy dog. He has improved on holding his pee, but the last 2 days he’s peed all over the floor as he walks. He peed on my wife about 30 minutes ago while she was sitting on the couch. He’s also very aggressive, he will run to the bay window and jump and start clawing the window when there’s what he feels is a threat. If you try and remove him from the window he attacks aggressively. Once he calms down he’s fine, but I’ve never seen a dog turn on their owners like he does.. We know his mother was American pit bull, we are guessing the other part is Great Pyrenees as he fits the bill. He has one brown eye and one blue eye. His sister was born deaf. He is so scared of the garbage truck going by that he jumps on you shaking and whimpering. He’s a loving dog when he’s not aggressive, but his stubbornness and peeing are wearing us down. We run him in the backyard every day for at least an hour. He has a lot of energy...

Shehass been a really great puppy. She is incredibly smart. I know everyone says that about their dog but she learned how to sit in 5 minutes and she does it on command every time. The same way with "stay". When I would feed her she would try to take the bowl from my handand jump for it and go for it before I could sit it down so I taught her to sit in literally 5 minutes with training treats and then once she learned that the next time I fed her before I put her bowl down I made her sit and then id say stay and hold her collar and say stay and then put her bowl down and say eat and after 2 days or 6 feedings she would sit then stay and wait until I say eat before eating and she learned that at 9 weeks old. Her favorite thing to do is play and wrestle with our other dog. He is a Chihuahua terrier mix and she's obsessed with him. She learns so fast it's crazy. He likes to run around cause he's fast so after a few minutes she learned to just wait for him to get close and thdn hr would juke and dodge her but after a couple of times she learned which way he would go and now he cant get passed her. Shr also out of nowhere taught herself how to "stalk" him like a lion does. She will get down low and crawl toward him when he's not looking and if he looks at her she'll freeze until he's not looking again and then when she's close enough she'll pounce on him. She figures things out very quickly and teaches herself nethings almost daily. My favorite thing about her though is how vocal she is. She has about 3 different barks but if you look at her and ask "what?" She will talk to you kind of like you see on the videos of huskies talking (if you haven't seen them you should look it up on YouTube just search huskies talking. Its so cute!) Besides normal puppy behavior like putting everything in her mouth and chewing on everything (not furniture or shoes just random things she'll find)she's a wonderful dog. She has a really short soft coat and good her face looks like a perfect mix of both a pit and a Pyrenees. She is growing big so fast! Wouldn't trade her for the world.

W e have had many different dogs all are unique. Compared to other dogs we have owned he is more laid back. Good watchdog, however not aggressive, friendly & affectionate. We have provided him with quite a lot of socialization since we adopted him as a puppy. He is able to go just about anywhere. He has a short black coat and does not tolerate heat well. He is about 75 pounds & extremely strong. Absolute joy to have in our home.

Gilly is a goofball and the love of my life. She is very, very trainable and can pick up tricks in a matter of minutes. Even at 7 months, she has a mostly reliable recall and I feel comfortable going off leash with her in most settings (city and outdoors). She lives with a cat and is very sweet, though frustrated the cat doesn't want to be play friends with her. She does want to chase squirrels, but I'm training her to sit when she sees them and already she is becoming more receptive to that. She is very loyal to me, my roommates, and the many friends (her aunties) that she sees regularly. No destructive behaviors in the house, she really likes to obey and I have been able to leave her home along uncrated since month 4 with absolutely no problems. Her only problem is that she is protective and is very vocal. She isn't aggressive, but she likes to run up to kids (especially if they are running or screaming) and bark at them. When I can be close, then if the kids put their hands out she will sniff and let them pet her so I truly don't think she wants to hurt them...it's more like she is letting them know that they are a kid. It's something we are actively working on, because some parents are okay but others get very frightened. But at 7 months, she is already more obedient than most full grown dogs I know, so I am not worried. She is truly my goofy best friend and the best thing in my life.

I adopted Brody from a nonprofit rescue organization at 10 months old (best estimate). According to his DNA test, he's a Pyrenees/Pit mix with about quarter Lab in there too. He is very smart and very strong willed. He was really mouthy until about 18 months old, and I still occasionally need to get out the bitter apple spray to deter gnawing on furniture, clothes, and slippers. He is a super chewer and food anxious (we use slow-feeder bowl). He's very protective of me as well as the house and yard, and can be reactive around children and other dogs. Obedience training is a work in progress and we're currently taking a leash walking class because he's very strong and loves to pull on walks, especially when a squirrel comes into his sightline. All of this said, he's a sweet dog and has calmed down considerably over the first year. We're able to go to dog parks now so he gets more vigorous exercise to supplement twice daily walks. We typically walk a lot more than indicated here (usually 30-35 miles per week).

Prim & Marco both seem to be SUPER smart! Just a few repetitions with treats & they catch right on with recall the following day; their progress is building very nicely. They tend to be a bit stubborn & strong willed; when trying new activities or offering no reinforcement, they tend to believe their participation is optional! Prim is all white with light eyes, white eyelids & lashes, very pale brown markings, while Marco is black & white like their pit mother. Both have short coats, but much thicker & softer than their pit mom. They are young so there seems to be no limit to their energy! They are crate training each other, as they don't like to be separated. They are very loving & social pups, & have been socialized with many other animals & people.

Joey is a unique dog. She is half Pyrenees and half pit/lab/boxer. She is friendly and affectionate, even with strangers and other dogs. She is completely non-reactive to aggressive dogs, it is remarkable, I have never seen anything like it. She doesn't know she's as big as she is so she tries to be a lap dog. We have to watch her around cats and small dogs as she tries to play with them and it can startle them. She has short fur and a double coat and sheds pretty much all the time. She gets a bath once a month which helps. She LOVES walking, so we walk her about one hour a day plus around the block trips as potty breaks. She loves the cold, and will play in the snow for a long time if we let her. Doesn't care for the heat though and we have to keep her out of prolonged direct sunlight in summer. Strangest thing about her is the fact that she does not bark at ALL, and only whimpers when she wants to go outside. From what I read, this is the opposite of what is normal for her breeds so have to assume this was early training (she was impounded and we adopted her).

Ozzy is definitely one of the best dogs I’ve ever been around. He’s very affectionate and smart. Housebreaking was a breeze. He’s had one accident in the house ever and he was sick at the time. His bark is much worse than his bite, as his bark is very loud and deep. Fortunately, he really only barks if he thinks there is a reason. Usually it is because somebody is at the door or in the yard. He has no problem with other dogs or cats, but he also doesn’t really pay any attention to them. He loves to play with the humans, but pretty much ignores other animals. The only thing that drives me crazy about Ozzy is that if he gets out of the yard, it turns into a game of “catch me” and he absolutely will wear himself out trying to keep from getting caught. Odd, because if he’s in the house or yard, he comes immediately when you call him. He really likes attention and to get petted. He will be happy to go on a 5 mile walk, but seems just as happy to take a two hour nap with you. He doesn’t like being alone, but he doesn’t pester you for affection.

He loves other people and gets along with other dogs as well (not a fan of cats). With that being said, I trust that he understands an uncomfortable situation and will protect me if need be. He is deaf and suffers from Idiopathic Epilepsy. We are about 8 months seizure free!! He is extremely food motivated which makes training easy. He is a very smart boy and has learned about 12 hand signals. Levi is very independent and just wants to play all day long. He is about 90 - 95 pounds right now and sheds like crazy. He absolutely loves having company over and will beg for pets and cuddles. He has been the best <3

I didn't realize Juno was a Pyre-Pit until we got her DNA results since we got her from the shelter but it definitely explains a lot for this 75-lb independent love bug! She may have been used for breeding as she was dumped at the shelter shortly after having a litter. Juno is incredibly sweet towards people and dogs of all sizes, including my 10-yo mainecoone. She is very calm, quiet, and only barks occasionally at neighborhood cats from our window at night. She does have some prey-drive for possums/cats it seems, but knows that our cat is family. She's also very nose-driven and pees territorially which comes from her pyre-side. She is also very independent, she likes to be near me but on walks she definitely does her own thing and loves to explore/sniff/mark. Otherwise she's a very chill low-medium energy dog. Other quirks: rarely barks, does not like to get wet at all, goofy but not super playful (will pick up toys when she's excited but doesn't really fetch or play tug of war), very food-motivated, respectful of space (animals and people), will check on all the rooms before bed.

I adopted Paisley at 1.5 years old from my local shelter after she had been captured, adopted, and then brought back to the shelter (no fault of her own). Needless to say, shelter dogs have issues. She had MAJOR abandonment anxiety and would destroy entire rooms if left alone, was scared of everything (even butterflies), and liked to counter surf/eat EVERYTHING. But from the beginning, she was very docile and has never nipped at anyone even if they deserved it, she was fine with her ears eyes and paws being messed with, and LOVES babies! Now, her abandonment anxiety is almost nonexistent, she warms up to people much easier, and only eats food that is left on the floor. She is very calm and well behaved though she will run off for about an hour each day. She is an absolute cuddle-bug! She has never had reason to attack anyone but does issue a warning growl or bark when an unknown man approaches me or our home, once I acknowledge her warning and/or the person she stops. Overall, she is quickly becoming the best dog I've owned!

Question

I have a 6 month old Great Pyrenees pit bull mix. She’s about 19 inches tall and 34 pounds. She’s been chewing up things outside a lot (rug, wood, some plastic) is she underfed? I feed her three cups a day, 1 1/2 twice a day.

Answer
Unfortunately, every food has a different nutrient profile and calorie content so I cannot answer this question without knowing what diet she is on. Check her body condition score. If low, she needs more calories. Her behaviour, however, is more likely due to boredom.

Answer
I'd be shocked if a breeder sold a 15 week old as a 15 month old, but without a photo it is hard for me to say. Check the teeth; a pup less than 7 months will have all of their baby teeth. A vet check is best and the vet will be able to estimate age.
