The Rat-Cha is a crossbreed between the purebred American Rat Terrier and Chihuahua.  This designer dog has high energy and is very loving toward their family.  The Rat-Cha, also called the Rat-Chi, is frisky and can be overprotective of their people.  Owners can prevent aggressive or undesirable protective traits by early socialization with people, places, and other dogs.  This cute and perky Rat Terrier Chihuahua mix tends to bond with a single person in the family and will spend much of their time on that person's lap.

Rat-Cha Breed History

The Rat-Cha is a popular designer breed due to the high popularity of both parent breeds.  Despite the pup's popularity, detailed accounts of their breeding programs and history are not available.  This is most likely due to the recent hybridization of both parent breeds and the number of variations that can be present in the Rat Terrier Chihuahua mix offspring.  Pet parents who wish to understand the histories and potential traits of their Rat Terrier Chihuahua mix can review those of both parents for insight.

The American Rat Terrier is an American breed long in the making.  The breeding program included several other well-established breeds, such as the Manchester Terrier, Bull Terrier, Old English White Terrier, and the Fox Terrier.  The purpose of the breed programs was to produce a small Terrier type that was a tenacious ratting dog, and that could get in tight places.  Despite their late recognition by the American Kennel Club in 2013, the American Rat Terrier has been long bred in the United States.  A Rat Terrier appeared alongside Shirley Temple in The Little Colonel and was the Terrier of choice of President Theodore Roosevelt, who wanted a rat dog to handle the White House rat problem.  The Rat Terrier varied in the United States depending on the region they were from as well.  In the south, the Rat Terrier was crossbred with the Beagle to produce a pack-minded ratting dog while the Greyhound and Whippet breeds were used in the midwest to give the Rat Terrier fleet abilities against the fast jackrabbits.

The Chihuahua is also a dog of the Americas but from Mexico.  Accounts of the Chihuahua, known then as Techichi, reach back as far as the 9th Century in the Mesoamerican region where the little dogs were bred as both vermin hunters and companions.  The Techichi was so well loved that they were often buried alongside their masters at death.  The Techichi faded into obscurity during the Spanish invasion of the Aztec State, but the small, resilient dog maintained themselves in the region and were rediscovered living in the Mexican state of Chihuahua during the mid-1800s, where the breed gained their new name.  Shortly after their rediscovery, the Chihuahua made their way north to the United States by the late 1800s and the American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1904.  Interest in the Chihuahua grew fast, and by the 1960s, the Chihuahua was considered one of the most popular dogs in the country.  Today, the Chihuahua still enjoys a high popularity ranking in the American Kennel Club.

Rat-Cha Breed Appearance

The Rat-Cha may vary widely in appearance not because the parents are so widely different, but because there is variation in the parent breeds standards.  However, this hybrid is sure to be small with a soft, sleek coat.  Some Rat-Chas have longer hair, depending on their parentage as both parent breeds may exhibit longer hair.  Their head is small and round with large, triangle-tipped ears that stand up.  The eyes are dark, round, and prominent but do not bulge out as much as the Chihuahua parent's eyes.  Both parent breeds suffer from dental issues, and this tiny-mouthed pup may have missing teeth or poor dentition, such as an underbite, both of which are not desirable traits.  The body is compact and long, with thin legs and a wiry short to medium-length tail.

Rat-Cha Breed Maintenance

The Rat-Cha is an easy dog to maintain and has minimal grooming needs.  They are moderate shedding dogs, and weekly brushing will help remove any excess loose or dead hair.  They are not a hypoallergenic dog, but weekly grooming will help keep the allergens down.  The Rat-Cha is not known to have a doggy odor so any fouls smells may point to a health concern, such as ear infection or dental issues.  This little dynamo is prone to developing dental problems, many of which may be prevented by keeping their teeth clean.  Owners can help their dogs maintain healthy mouths by brushing their teeth frequently and providing them with hard, rubberized chew toys.

American Rat Terriers and Chihuahuas often suffer from patellar luxation, hip dysplasia, and eye conditions. Secure pet health insurance today to avoid high veterinary care costs. Rat-Cha Temperament

The Rat-Cha is an affectionate companion that typically bonds with one person within the family.  They require early socialization to reduce aggressiveness toward strangers and are not well suited for young children.  They have high energy but prefer activities on their own terms rather than being forced to play.  Often, this snuggler is perfectly content on their owner's lap.  They do not have a pack mentality and prefer to be single dogs living under one roof.  However, with socialization, they can learn to live in harmony with other dogs.  The prey-mind may make living with cats more difficult, but socialization will also help with this.  House training the Rat Terrier Chihuahua mix is relatively easy, considering how small the breed is.  This is attributed to this pup's high intelligence and desire to please their master.

Rat-Cha Activity Requirements

The Rat-Cha is an active hybrid with high energy.  However, activities are often done in short bursts, and this mini companion can get most of their daily exercise in the home.  They are highly adaptable to small space living, but a small backyard where they can run and jump is ideal for this designer dog.  They should not be left alone outside and do not tolerate being alone for long.  They may develop negative behaviors, such as chewing or digging if they become bored or lonely.  The Rat Terrier Chihuahua mix does not do well in cold environments and prefers warmer ones.  However, this breed can live just about anywhere considering they will spend most of their time in a climate controlled home.

He's a great friendly dog who gets along with every dog he comes into contact with. His high energy can be annoying at times, but it's just part of his personality. If you let him play hard and run around till he tires himself out, then he'll be a good lapdog like this site says.

His favorite thing is to lay and sleep under blankets. Loves to cuddle anybody. He is very intelligent and easy to train. Very, very protective of everybody in the family! Actually barks and "attacks" if there is play hitting going on or wrestling. Biggest issue is separation anxiety; If family is leaving and he knows he will be all alone, he will whine and bark. However, this makes him very excited and happy when somebody comes in. Does amazing with new people. Doesn't get along with other dog, and acts okay with cats. No dental issues or health issues (yet), and very low maintenance. Does play from time to time and have funny bursts of energy. Not too bad in the bath and just fine on walks. Probably the best dog we have had!!

She is one of the dorkiest dogs I have ever met. She is very particular about which people she likes. She is very protective of her family and will act like a guard dog. She is very curious and loves food. When she was a puppy she was very easy to train and is very good about being potty trained. Loves to sleep at times and then will get bursts of energy. Definitely a loyal dog to those she loves. Has suffered from some seizures in the past with unknown causes does not have them frequently though. Also sneezes a lot which actually gives her character. For her age she jumps around and still has a lot of energy.

GMan is possessive and very protective of me to the point of aggression. He growls at men especially who try to get near me and he doesn’t like other dogs or animals at all!!! He only likes to be with me and my male companion and a few of his roommates who feed him hot dogs. GMan has a sensitive digestive system and can’t eat anything in the way of human food or he gags, chokes, and vomits. He loves to eat however, and gobbles his own food three or four times a day. I feed him small portions of fresh pet or some soft refrigerated chicken meat which has spinach and fruit as well. GMan loves sleeping under his yellow green blanket and likes to frolic in piles of leaves and on fresh green grass. He is a loving dog and good companion animal for me and my male friend, but even gets bitey and growls at us occasionally. He was brought up from Mexico on a truck in a cage in his own vomit and feces and came to me with kennel cough which turned to pneumonia and had to be hand fed and on antibiotics and was a victim of the Oregon Humane Society and the evil drug culture in Mexico and criminals who steal dogs and transport them from a scandalous crime ridden system in a Mexico and in the US all over which takes stolen dogs and sells them as “Rescues” to unsuspecting and vulnerable America elders and poor people who think they are helping rescue dogs and saving themselves some money. Also, there is a huge problem in overbreeding these RAT CHA dogs and making too many of them for greedy people trying to profit financially for their own benefit. UGLY UGLY UGLY The RAT CHA is a dog that should not be overbred. They are aggressive and not good with children and nip and bite people. I am terrified personally!!

Jess is a sweet baby who we found in the streets a few months ago. He was very friendly when we found him, but now that he has gotten comfortable with us, he is a little more protective and aggressive to people who come into our home. Most of the time he just wants to sleep in a comfy spot, but he also loves to play and go on walks. We make sure he gets 4 walks a day and lots of play time. I also give him calming supplements and hip+joint supplements since his breed is prone to these sorts of problems. We have only had him a few months, but his vet says he is healthy and we are absolutely in love with him!!!

He is a great dog that is very independent. He was a rescue and had trust issues. He quickly bonded to me, and when I take him home to my mother. He spends most of his time sitting on my lap, but then will sporadically play for 5 minutes. He is still pretty sketchy when he is around young/loud children. He is scared of new people, but rarely barks.

My fawn and white Rat-Cha is loving to all the members, including my 21 month old son, and patient. He is super intelligent and easy to learn tricks with. He is alert and protective of us as well. I love his confidence and cautiousness when he meets new people and dogs. He is also very fun to nap and cuddle with. Yet, he respects personal space and likes time to himself as well. He doesn’t shed much and what he does shed is easy and quick to pick off. Also, he doesn’t have that pungent dog dander odor. He is perfect for our current lifestyle and our apartment. A very go-with-the-flow kind of attitude if your provide enough stimulation, which isn’t very much. He is easy and fun to play with. I love him very very much!

I got Drogo about a week ago from the Humane Society. He adjusted quickly to his new home. He is more attached to me, but he also cuddles with my boyfriend and follows him around. He has a lot of energy and chews through toys easily. He's 22 lbs according to the vet, and stands maybe 18 inches tall. He likes to jump on people and has no problem adjusting to new people. Other dogs are questionable. He is definitely protective of me. He has a fawn coat with paler spots at his shoulder blades and bend of his tail. He's super affectionate and the best thing I've ever done. I wouldn't trade him for the world.

Barbie is a very lovely dog and enjoys playing a variety of games. She can be a brat at times, for example she acts rebellious when she is loose outside and doesn't listen when called. She often barks at people and hates bigger dogs but is friendly towards small dogs. I like to joke that she should've been named Raquel instead of Barbie. Though she has her chihuahua side of her that makes her act as if she cant be devoured by larger dogs, deep down she is just a fragile Barbie doll. She is a picky eater though that is probably my fault because i spoil her with treats. She's actually the cutest thing, especially when she wants attention; she tugs at your hand and puts her head under it. Overall, Barbie is a good girl and props to her for sticking around with an annoying owner like me.

She is very attached to me and follows me everywhere, I don’t even need a leash when I walk her. She just makes sure she can see me. She doesn’t like large dogs much but she is very friendly to cats and small dogs. She sleeps with me every night and she eats very well. Tut is such a wonderful dog with one of the most unique and fun personalities I’ve ever seen be it dog or person. He loves cuddling and will follow me around the apartment whenever I get up. He is always full of energy and will typically grab his favorite toy (he only likes one toy) and will run around in circles for about ten minutes and then lay down on my lap. He is so loving and gentle, he treats his toys with care, he doesn’t rip them apart which seemed strange at first because of the rat terrier in him, but it is so adorable to watch.

Bruno is a lovable little creature. After being found on the streets, we took him into our household. At the start, he was a bit hesitant and scared. But, once he figured out we were his permanent family, he quickly became comfortable. Maybe even a bit too comfortable with his little accidents around the house. He enjoys going out for walks except when it is cold outside. He gets anxious when we leave him by himself for a few hours. But, when we return he is full of joy and pure content. He loves cuddling with us at night and makes himself a nice bed under the blankets. Overall, Bruno is an incredible and adorable Rat-Cha that will forever be our companion.

I have 2 kids and 2 other dogs besides Willow. She fit right in! She is the sweetest and most submissive dog I’ve had. She acts as a mother to our poodle mix puppy who we got after her. She still goes in the cage with him at night even though I give her the option to stay out & sleep with us. She holds her own against my 8 yr old Jack Russell (he’s a jerk) and has been a great pack dog even though what I’ve read says they’re not. She HATES the cold, snow, rain etc. and will poo in the house in winter months. She loves to sunbathe on the deck. She HATES being left alone for long amounts of time or being separated from me. If I shut her out of my room she is not happy with me! Very smart girl.

One HOT (100*F+) summer day I was waiting to turn onto a busy interstate when in my side mirror I barely caught a glimpse of something darting from the nearby woods and under my vehicle. I put my vehicle in park and in an attempt to verify what I had just saw, I opened my car door. Before I could unbuckle my seat belt to get out of the car a small (unidentified) creature lunged from the baking pavememt below and onto my lap. To my utter and complete shock, it was a thin trembling and tagless female Rat-Chi. Looking at this dog who was very quick to make herself comfortable in the crease between my thighs, I imagined the family searching for this adorable thing. Pulling off I began searching for anyone who could be lookong for her. I approached locals. After about an hour, I reached the nearest gas station. I asked locals if anyone recognized her or might know who she belonged to. With no success, the clerk agreed to take my information and post a bulliten with a picture of her after some food and water 'Sweetie' and I hit the road towards home. Years have since passed with not a single call for her. And if I may be honest, Im kind of glad - because this sweet little thing that literally lept into my lap one day and everyday since has been a true blessing.

He was a real sweet and loving dog. He was not fond of my brother when he was born since my brother liked to pull his tail but as my brother grew older, my dog got real affectionate with him. When he was out in the yard you could find him in 4 spots, in the middle of the yard laying down in the sunlight, laying on a bench we had outside, in the shed by his water and food bowl, or right in front of the door to the backyard watching out for any strangers in the alley. He was very protective of us all and did not like when we would go near other dogs. He liked being the only dog and wanted all of our attention. He liked to pick fights with dogs that were twice his size but he was loving towards other people. He was also a major shedder.

Our princess has been in the family for so long. I think she was only a year old when she was adopted and she used to have anxiety. Now, she's become a vital part of the family. She prefers some family members than others (like the aunts who give her snacks). She loves sunbathing, and when we had a larger backyard, she would explore and do it all day. Her favorite toy used to be bouncy balls. She absolutely HATES water and swimming, so it's a struggle to give her a bath. She likes to bury her food, and chase squirrels and chase birds. She is unfriendly towards strangers, particularly tall males. These days, she's not as active as she used to be. She doesn't run anymore nor does she play with bouncy balls. Although, when she's with her best friend, she likes to be chased around. When it comes to food, she rejects traditional dog food. As a puppy, she liked Milk Bones, but then she became spoiled by my grandma and now she only eats flavored Vietnamese food. She likes pizza, rice, and braised pork. It has to be seasoned and have a bit of fat; she rejects plain boiled meat. At the end of the day, she cocoons herself into her bed and blanket and snores.

She’s very snuggly and loves to sit on our laps. She has favorite toys- mainly small toys with fur that she enjoys plucking and licking. We love our Bella Jade immensely and wouldn’t know what to do without her.

I have had Scarlett since she was 10 months, and she has enriched my life every day ever since. She is smart, affectionate, loyal, and playful. She is also a great watchdog. Always very alert, and doesn't hold back on barking at unfamiliar or mysterious sights and sounds. She is also very snuggly, always happy to receive hugs and cuddles, and equally eager to give them. She is almost always happy, frequently wagging her tail. She loves everyone and is quick to befriend new people she meets, especially kids. She also is gentle and friendly towards other animals, be it other dogs, cats, or even small animals. When I used to have pet mice, she would act like a big sister to them. She will sometimes give light "play bites" to people when she's feeling feisty, but has never once bitten anyone out of genuine aggression. She can wag her tail on command, and responds well to other tricks and commands most of the time as well. She is also very intuitive, and seems to display keen understanding of things going on around her. She is always able to sense when I am sad or sick, and will stick by my side and be even more affectionate than usual during these times. All in all, she's just a precious little darling angel who is simply the whole package. I love her with all my heart and wouldn't trade her for the universe.

Me and my fiance got Gizmo at a flea market when we were 19, and we were not prepared for our little monster. He spent all of his time biting our fingers and, due to our inexperience in training, was poorly socialized and ended up being very hostile to new people and animals. As gizmo grew up so did we and we got better at taking care of him. Even at almost 3 years old he is taking fairly well to being trained and socialized. He adores the people he is close to, even including our cat (whom which he initially despised with a passion). With a baby on the way I look forward to my child growing up with my little man and considering him as good a friend as I do.

Rescue and she has been in our home for 4 days. she was rescued from shelter by a rescue. Was tormitted at first home before shelter. When she arrived in her crate she was scared, aggressive and shaking. Left her in her crate until she relaxed a Lil and opened the crate, allowed her to come out on her time and in a few hours she was sitting behind me on the couch. Slowly offered treats and petted her and now she wants me to hold her all the time😊 she is warming up to our 80 boxer. So much stress relief having her, she's using papers and going outside. A few accidents but she's young and in a new home so she'll get it.

Ace is super affectionate towards my husband and myself. He has a select few others who he loves on when he’s around them. He’s kind of snobby. My brother lives with us too. When I’m at home, he barks at my brother but doesn’t if I’m not home. We also have a pit bull but Ace would be perfectly content being an only dog. He loves playing with small toys or tennis balls. He also loves laying in my or my husband’s lap. Ace is demanding when he wants something and licks my face until I get up. I learned to keep a small bowl of water accessible to him at night. Since he sleeps with us, he will wake us for water at 2:00 am.

He is a stubborn little guy but so loveable! We crate trained him for sleeping arrangements and he loves to crawl in his own space when he needs a time out. He is very fast and hard to catch if he doesn't want to be caught, he also fits into very small spaces easily. He has picked me as his person and follows me everywhere I go in the house. Excellent companion service dog.. great laughs and loves.

He is the exact dog you describe, wary toward strangers, cautious around children, the smartest dog in my small pack. His nose is better than my hound’s. He is stubborn and, at 13, still wants to do it his way, not mine. He can tell time and is the pack spokesdog. He has had petite mal seizures for 10 years and chronic bronchitis for about four years. He still has a few teeth left. He is a cat chaser and dog reactive.

whatever my day brings
She is the best thing that has happened to me. I recommend this breed with my heart. My little girl is super sweet with everyone, loves to cuddle, and has a persistently happy/charming personality. My parents brought her home when i was about 5 years old. She started following me everywhere the second she saw me. I use to dress her with built a bear clothe and play with her like a doll all the time. She never showed any sign of annoyance or aggression. Her cleverness never fails to impress me, and I think everyone should own a Rat-Cha at least once in their life.

He absolutely adores people but doesn't do well with other dogs. He can sometimes be aggressive towards small children if they run up behind him. He loves to snuggle but does get playful in short bursts. However, as the breed description mentions, he only wants to play on his own terms and has zero interest in his toys if he's not in the mood to play. He is also super curious and loves to sniff and explore new items or areas. He loves to sunbathe, and also as the description mentioned, does much better in warm weather than in cold.

She’s such a cute dog! I love her little face when she wants something. She’s very beautiful and obedient. She’s very smart and if she loves to get under the blanket when she sleeps. She’s scared of thunder and loves to be cuddled. She watches tv with us and loves salad. She is one strange dog we’ve had but we love her so much! She was separated from her mom at an early age and while she was at the place we got her the people at the vet where we got her said she would cry a lot. She was kept in a cage for about 2 months until we got her. The first time she saw me she was ecstatic and we just had to get her the same day. Best pet ever you’d say. When someone’s sad she comes to you and tries to cheer you up. She can also detect when something doesn’t seem right. She can also pull the puppy eyes and it brings her attention which is what she likes a lot. But due to her being kept in a cage and separated from her mom, she suffers separation anxiety. She cries if we leave her a lone in the house when we leave and end up having to bring her. When someone’s driving she usually sits on their lap and scratch the window so he/she can bring it down so she can get wind. She’s very smart at detecting if we’re on the highway or road. She’s just smart and very lovable. I recommend a dog like her! You’ll fall in love.

He’s grasping basic commands easily and beginning to understand more complex commands more with each day. He’s a fantastic companion, very loyal. Unfortunately, he wasn’t socialized very well so we have been working with him to like strangers and other dogs outside of his space more, but it is going very well. He’s a cuddly little thing that really just loves his car rides and hikes.

When I first got him he was very shy and could fit in my hand. He started to open up and eventually started feeling confident about his new home and would play and go exploring. long story short he went somewhere he wasn't supposed to and someone else in the house kicked him. I think whenever that happened it gave him PTSD because after that he was a nightmare. it's like he was scared of everything so he developed this "submissive pissing" thing. you couldn't even bend down to pet him without him shivering for half a second and pissing on the floor before realizing you're just going to pet him so then he would wag his tail. It's been three years since then and I have since moved away to a new home and after all this time it's almost as if he's kind of gotten over it. But I have to say, when the article says this breed is a one-person dog, they mean it. This dog stays glued to my hip. I'm sitting on my bed right now and he is pressed up against the side of my leg as close as he can. If I get up to go pee he gets up and tries to follow. Sometimes it gets annoying but it's clear, without a doubt, that I am his favorite person in the whole world. So knowing that I just got used to it. If I'm in the kitchen, I've learned to just glance at the ground and make sure he's not under me. If we're riding in the car, I got to make sure he doesn't follow me whenever I get out of the car. On the subject of training, they are stupid easy to train. Within one week he learned three tricks. he can stand on his hind legs and spin around in circles when you say, "dance", he can stand on his hind legs and walk forward when you say, "walk", and of course he lays on the ground when you tell him to get down. There were times when he was younger where I debated giving him away, but I'm glad I stuck with him because he has taught me so many things, and I think I have taught him things too, so now we're basically inseparable. This is DEFINITELY a good-looking breed of dog too. They definitely tend to look more Rat Terrier than Chihuahua, but still small and manageable, packaged with lots of personality. Oh and UNDYING loyalty. If you're considering this breed, I'd say go for it, this is what they had in mind when they said,"man's best friend".

We adopted him when he was 9 weeks old from the Animal Shelter. He got very sick with kennel cough 5 days later. I didn't think he was going to make it, but I took him to the vet and he got better. No health problems since. He was easy to potty train, maybe because we had another dog that he followed around. There's never a dull minute with him around and he lets us know if anybody is within 50 ft of the house. I love this breed.

She was a lost little girl with no chip at a small town post office. Best delivery I ever received was picking her up. She is now our so very much loved baby girl. She is fun and expressive. She has 4 favorite people and knows them by name. She is attached to my now 7 year old nephew. Kane is her favorite person in the world. He was living with me when we adopted Missy Moo. They are besties! Our 19 year old daughter, my husband and I are her 3 go to's if Kane is not around. :) I am glad she met Kane when she was young as she is not adverse to small children, unlike other small dogs I have known. She is our first small house dog and is teaching us so much. She goes EVERYWHERE with us! She loves traveling in the RV with us. She is a go bye bye girl with her little pillow and blanky set. We have so much fun dressing her in cute sweaters and winter coats ... the whole boot thing wasn't a big hit with her. All in all this little bug has a heart and a zest for life every bit as big as a Great Dane! We LOVE our Molly Girl! She is chipped now, but VERY rarely out of our sight. She is a treasure and we recognize that!

Great high energy pup. He is a quick learner strives to please. Easiy housebroken. Big chewer and if not handled properly I am told by his littermates owners that his siblings have chewed many a chair leg and destroyed a few pillows and even a couch. I have been lucky with this behavior and have not had any issues with him chewing my household items. Fletcher has his antlers and chews them obsessively. He also has a three story plastic storage system for all his toys which he is able to access at his disire anytime of the day. He doesn't care for strangers and despises anyone/creature that is on the opposite side of his door. Love to go outside and on long walks in appropriate weather. Once outside and on a leash the tough guy stance he displays "protecting "his home disappears instantly. He doesn't like loud noise or people. Thunder and fireworks stress him beyond his limits. He is a shaker to the point of vibration when scared or nervous. He loves to be with his humans and needs to often have his paw at the very least touching them when sleeping. Prefers to tunnel under the blankets rather be on top of them. Crates easily and appreciates the saftey and security of it when his humans are not home. He requires a sweater and a thick coat during the winter season in New England. Great dog breed for those wanting the play drive and energy level of some of the larger dog breeds but live in the city and just don't have enough space to fairly house a large dog. What these little at-cha's lack in size they make up for in energy and personality.

Explore the woods
I received both my female Chihuahua and Charlie my male Rat-Cha as puppies from the same breeder, about six months apart. I'm single and work during the day so they keep each company. Charlie is submissive to the Chihuahua's bossiness. Charlie is very sweet and timid, almost skittish most of time. Though he'll always come find me to snuggle up next to, he doesn't really like to be picked up or held in my lap - he likes to be under the covers next to me or follow me around when we're out walking. He's afraid of people, other dogs, strange noises, thunder, buzzers, etc...he LOVES to wear his "Thundershirt". It helps him to not shake so much during scary sounds. He doesn't bark that much - when he does, it's because he's joining in with the Chihuahua - but typically he'd prefer to run and hide. I'm not very social and so neither are the dogs, but if I have a guest over he'll get comfortable and even cuddle up with them after awhile. He loves rawhide chews, Dentastyx and chicken in addition to the dry food. He even likes seafood! He loves to run and chase squirrels and birds. I live in a private wooded area with a small beach, and I take them out to run around without a leash twice a day. They run all over the house too - I throw tiny treats down a long hallway they have to go chase after, they love that. Charlie gets cold easily and is almost always buried under the covers. He doesn't like car rides (he just cowers and shakes the whole time). He has very short hair (almost none on his chest) and likes wearing little dog sweaters. He was easy to potty train, and I mean indoors on the potty pad in their little doggy bathroom, that way they can go in there if I don't get home for lunch to let them out. He's also very good about coming when I call or whistle or stopping when I say NO. Just a sweet, pleasant little companion that works well with the other dog.

I rescued Penelope when she was 1.5 years old, & she clung to me immediately. We have been through many changes in our 3.5 years together. At 2.5 years old, she had to have intense surgery, due to nerves being severed in the spine. This happened due to playing with a slightly bigger dog. She used to play a lot of her back, & the vet said because of her size, “these things just happen.” Penelope went from dancing on her hind legs, spinning in circles, playing a lot to being much more reserved after her surgery. Which is understandable. She’s still super loving, always following me where I go as always. I have 4 daughters, 7, 8, 9, & 10 - she is a bit timid around my younger two, who have the most energy, but has never been aggressive towards them. We also have a pit Bull-mastiff mix, who she has a love-hate relationship with, as he is 100x bigger than her, but wants to be her BFF. Rescuing Penelope was the best decision I ever made!

I adopted Nova about 7 months ago, previously I had a purebred Chihuahua for 12 years and she passed a few days after she turned 20. I got Nova 2 weeks later. Both are/were sweet dogs but it's like night and day. Nova is so friendly towards other dogs, has a ton of energy, loves to play, and gets along with everyone she meets. Not as clingy like needs to be on my person at all times clingy as my last one, it's still everywhere I go, she is sure to follow. She is also extremely smart. She learned sit, lay, roll over, and halt (stay) within 5 minutes. I adopted her and was told she was spayed to end up finding out that she isn't and that she has a heart murmur so surgery isn't really an option, so that kinda stinks. Otherwise, she's been such a gem!

We adopted Qori two months ago. He is about 7 to 8 years old. He showed more aggressiveness at the beginning. He is getting to become more friendly and relaxed. He has learned to sit and wait but can get very stubborn when you call him. He doesn't. like other dogs. He is very kind and sweet with the owner

Playing Ball
My experience with our Rat-Cha has been wonderful. She loves to snuggle and is very affectionate. She sleeps under the covers with me every night and happily follows me around the house during the day. She gets excited and likes to play but only for about 20 minutes per Day and then is ready for a nap. I have to keep her on a leash when she goes out to use the bathroom because she will chase joggers or people bicycling. If another animal or person comes in our yard or knocks on our door she will bark and bark and definitely let us know someone or something is there. I have a four-year-old little girl and a three-year-old nephew. She is quite good with the little kids, I just make sure to supervise when they are playing around her because she has growled at them when they were being too hyper around her. She has never been aggressive towards them though.

They are such a wonderful dog to have, they are SO EASY to train. They are not really yappy dogs. And they are hyper! They do sometimes have problems with other dogs if they are not raised with them when the dog was younger. They get along with parrots, cats, and any other animal in my opinion! They also work as a pet in a condo and they can be left alone for a long time! Very cute dog!

Bruce has been the best dog ive ever had. He is so loving, he even will hug you by pressing his head hard against your chest. Favorite activity, snuggling but he gets these burst of energy where he will take off runnin do a loop around the house cm back. But about 2-3 times is about it. He likes bigger dogs to know hes boss especially when hes sitting in my lap. These type of dogs are great to have, very loving.

Luna has such high energy she loves to play and entertain herself. We have a 5 year old Chi-Pin who she really likes and does well with. She loves children and is not afraid of anything. When people are around that she doesn't know she keeps her distance without fear. We already have her trained to sit and watch when new people come around, that she does, although she can be a bit sassy. She loves attention. The only 2 problems I have now is she pees a lot, she does go to the pad but tends to go in areas besides the pad. The other problem is she bites a lot when you hold her she'll keep bitting your hands. She does tend to bite anything near her. When she does this we always have a toy near to give her. She's still a pup, fast learner and very smart. When she Settles down she loves being on your lap with her small soft blanket and a soft toy. The best thing we've done from day one with her was interduce her to her own corner with a soft bed, a couple small soft blankets and lots of toys.

Adopted as a rescue 7 months ago and behavior pattern has not changed. Very difficult to train, shakes and trembles if given a command; ran away from dog trainer. Potty pad trained but also has yard to do business yet still has to wear diaper due to submissive peeing. She doesn't play with toys, she's not treat motivated, she only wants to sit in her human's lap and sleep. That is the highlight of her life. But she is an attention getter when we take walks as everyone loves her cute little prance. I don't know her background prior to adoption other than rescued from a hoarder.

Jax is very affectionate and loves to cuddle. He usually finds a lap before you finish sitting down. My girlfriend often refers to him as her souls dog as he is needy and in search of constant attention. He’s not afraid to let you know that your not petting him and tends to get jealous if our other dog is getting attention. He is a very well behaved dog and rarely has accidents in the house. He is able to go out without a rope but has been known to seek out the occasional adventure if you take your eye off of him.

My Fifi has been a wonderful dog to have! She is very loyal and such a sweet girl. I am her ‘person,’ but she tolerates my husband, as he sneaks her snacks. She doesn’t mind other adults. She is not a fan of children, in general, but she will tolerate them. She is pretty submissive, so as long as they are gentle, she tolerates them. She only has issues with food aggression, mostly with children and other animals. Never with humans at any other time. She doesn’t really pay attention to the other dogs or the cat, sort of aloof. She is a total couch potato; perfectly content to sleep beneath a fuzzy blanket in her crate and when she was younger, always in my lap. Walks turn into me carrying her back home. She doesn’t have teeth anymore, and has a touch of canine dementia, but she still leads a meaningful happy life. Mostly healthy otherwise. She was so-so with training; I taught her how to sit and crate training was a breeze, but she wouldn’t do much else for me. Not really food or toy motivated at all. She’s a pretty mellow old lady and is loved by all.

I got him from a another guy who adopted him but couldn’t take care of him anymore. It’s been about 3 months and he’s a happy dog but he is aggressive towards others and takes a while to warm up. He’s very fearful I don’t know his back story but it seems as if he has been in a horrible situation before me I think it was abuse he experienced. We are trying to show him that everything that use to happen to him is never going to happen again and get him on the right path to be friendly to others. We are on the process of house training him he’s done well some days but then some days he chews things up. He’s a lovable dog and stays with me most of the day. Oh and I’m a teenager 16 to be exact he’s my bestfriend.

One of the best dogs I have ever had. He loves everybody in the family and is very loyal and protective of us already. He tends to stick with me, but loves my wife and kids just as much. We have 2 other dogs (Pitbull and Beagle) and plays with them all the time and we have never had an incident with them since we’ve gotten him. Easy to train for the most part and scary intelligent (he knows how to open his crate). If you want a high loving low maintenance dog then this is the dog for you, so enjoy your 15-18 years long time adventure with this pup.

I’ve had Gaspode for about four years. He was originally a shelter dog when I got him after I got my first house. When I went to see him at the shelter my two eldest nieces, about 10 and 8 at the time were with me and he did great with them. After his first year with me he’s been great around others and even tries to be the life of the party, going from lap to lap, but the first year was a challenge. He bite a coworker, a military friend, my roommate and my middle niece although in the latter’s case I told her not to get to wild and he was only playing. After the first year I haven’t had any problems. He is protective of me but is more than happy to share a bed with my girlfriend. He does get jealous when I pet my cat but they do get along fine. He gets along with my parents and friends dogs but not so much with cats outside my house. Other than his dislike of the wipers he does well on road trips and likes going fishing but as noted shouldn’t be left alone or off leash. Overall he’s been the easiest dog to care for I’ve ever had with the added bonus, along with the cat, of taking care of some of the mice that get in my house.

The friendliest pup ever! Full grown he is around 12 lbs. When you don't give him enough attention he grabs his toys and pouts until you play with him. When you leave for work he'll snuggle up into a ball in his blanket and give you adorable sad puppy eyes making it really hard to leave. He is definitely my best buddy.

My rat-cha mix is a high energy pup that loves to play. He’s very smart, so he quickly learned to escape pens and climb onto things. To help entertain and occupy him I bought a few puzzle type toys and he loves them. This especially helps when he has to be in his crate or alone at all to prevent negative behaviors. He loves being held and will want to sleep with you at night and be on your lap throughout the day. He is very playful with other dogs and gets along with large breeds; like my pit bulls and boxer.

She loves to play with her older two sisters which are both lab mixed. She is in charge of the house and lets everyone know when it's treat time. She also loves to hunt, I often find dead chipmunks and mice in the yard. Once I caught her with a snake 3 times longer than her. By the time I got to her the snake was no more. She runs on 3 legs alternating between the rear legs, hence her name. She is a very happy little dog. I found her at a pet rescue shelter when she was just over a year old

They are diggers in the yard because they are digging for insects and smell the moles. They love to lay on my lap under covers. Very affectionate with everyone but especially me and my partner. Had another dog and they played and got along so well. Have a cat now, raised since kitten, and they play and get along alright. He's never once bitten anyone or even got slightly mouthy. Doesn't bark unless it's to alert me of something. Better off leash than on, but does love to chase squirrels when given the opportunity. He's never killed one; he likes the chase. LOVES to go on hikes! He can do 6-7 mountain miles with no problem. Loves sand and digging, not so hot on the ocean but will swim in lakes. Loves to cuddle. Mine frightens easily, but I got him at 5 months old and I know his first 5 months were not great. Loves people food—my fault. This dog has a palate. Would do ANYTHING for peanut butter, but will leave well-done steak on the ground—LOL. He likes it medium rare—I swear. He has two modes: on a walk/going for a walk, and sleep. He doesn't like to play with toys much, but loves the laser light so much that he became obsessed and we had to stop playing like that... so beware of that. Overall, he is such a good boy, so loving, so easy. Just wants to run and sniff in the woods and go on walks, and he'll lead me right back home when he's done. I love him so much!

Question

How to potty train my rat cha

Answer
Animal Expert Question Icon
Question - New pet
Question

My Rat-cha barely eats. I am not use to it. Maybe a bite or two here and there. Is this normal for this breed?

Answer
Yes, it absolutely can be. These guys are notoriously fussy and don't need a lot of calories, especially if not very active. The main things is that they are active and healthy and a normal body condition score. If underweight, there may be a medical issue that needs to be looked into. Any treats, chews, dental sticks etc that are given will mean less dog food is eaten.

Question

I have a 4 y/o Ratcha, named king. My mom bought him when I lived with her, he’s been my bestie since. We already had a 5 y/o female min pin. he was 2 When I moved out, and he wasn’t being properly taken care of(barred to basement, little outside or stranger interaction.locked in small cage with 2 other small dogs) i adopted him with my GF and roommate. In the interaction HES had with other puppies has been positive(in the 20 minutes he had with puppy female pit bull) the she wants her own fur baby, what dogs do you recommend that would be compatible? 30-50lbs recommended Apartment btw THANKS!

How old will my rat change calms down.. She is super hyper

Answer
This is really variable. It can depend on which genes they've inherited from each parent breed as well as their individual personality and lifestyle. Most mature nicely between the ages of 2 and 3. Providing plenty of mental and physical stimulation (in the form of running, scenting games, food puzzles etc) can help significantly.
