Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka Breed History

Tsvetnaya Bolonka means colored lap dog and has many nicknames such as Russian Colored Bichon, Russian Lapdog and Bolonka Zwetna. His ancestry dates back to the early 18th century when Louis XIV presented the Bolonka as a gift to members of Russian nobility. Years later, more ancestors of the Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka were brought into Russia when Napoleon’s army invaded. He was called the French Bolonka at that time. Russians really had no need for toy breeds because of the harsh environment and the need for more working dogs. During the Soviet Regime, toy dogs were considered to be unnecessary. Since small dogs were not able to be imported into Russia at this time, toy breeds began being developed from small dogs that were already in the country. The Bolonka was created from small dogs such as the Pekingese, Shih Tzu, Bichon, French Bolognese and Toy Poodle. People in Russia wanted a toy sized lap dog with a mild mannered temperament for apartment living instead of the large or giant working dogs. In 1966, he was officially named the Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka. Once the Iron Curtain fell, interest in the breed began to increase. In 1978, the Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka was beginning to be exported to other countries. The American Kennel Club has accepted the Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka into its Foundation Stock Service in 2014, which is the first step towards becoming an AKC recognized breed. He was accepted in 2017 by the International All Breed Canine Association as a rare breed within the Toy Group.

Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka Breed Appearance

The Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka is a small toy breed. His body should be boxy, meaning his back should not be longer than his legs and he should resemble a square. He has long coat that should have big waves or curls. A straight coat is not desirable. He should never look fine boned or fragile, but should be moderately boned and sturdy. The male Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka have a moustache and beard whereas females do not. His tail is supposed to curl over his back with the tip touching his back. His ears hang down but should not be excessively long or short. The Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka comes in a variety of colors including black, brown, gray, red, white and wolf-gray. He has a coat that does not shed, similar to that of the Bichon and Shih Tzu. He is sometimes mistaken for the Shih Tzu when he is in full coat.

Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka Breed Maintenance

The Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka is a high maintenance dog. He requires daily brushing to prevent matting from occurring. His coat does mat easily and if not properly taken care of skin issues can arise. His entire body must be brushed; a comb may be used on ears, beard and legs. A pin brush works best, however a small slicker brush can be used on puppy coats. Most people with allergies do well with the Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka since he does not shed. Breeds that do not shed are thought to be hypoallergenic because the dander and saliva stay stuck on the hair and are not released into the environment. The Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka does require frequent bathing to keep his hair in top condition. His hair does require trimming to keep them looking their best. Ears should be cleaned once a week to prevent infection. His nails should be trimmed as needed, generally once every two to three weeks. His teeth should also be cleaned regularly to prevent tooth decay and tartar buildup.

Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka Temperament

The Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka is intelligent, friendly and mild mannered. He should never be shy or show aggression toward other dogs or people. He also gets along well with cats and other small pets. An overly spoiled Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka can become territorial and snappy with new people. They can become aggressive toward anyone who comes near their person. He was bred specifically to be a companion dog to sit on the laps of nobility. He loves meeting new people and shows affection towards anyone. Because of his small size, he should never be left alone in the yard as birds of prey will see him as prey. Many times the Russian Tsvetnaya Bolonka has been trained to a litter box rather than having to go outside, making him a full-time indoor dog. He sees all new people as possible playmates. He likes to greet people and without proper training, can become obnoxious when meeting people. Just like with a large breed, training is important to ensure that you have a well mannered companion.

Gizmo has been the only small dog I have ever owned and the best dog I have ever had. I have 4 small children ages 3 and under and he enjoys playing with them. He is spoiled. He is healthy and well mannered. I have noticed lately that he is having dental issues. I was wondering if that was common for this breed.
