The Sceagle is a combination of the Beagle and Scottish Terrier that makes an excellent family pet, hunting companion, and even a good watchdog. They are affectionate, alert, intelligent, and gentle but they can be stubborn as well so training them may take some time and extra effort. The Sceagle is a small dog of about 20 pounds that has short to medium length fur that may be soft or wiry but is usually straight and easy to groom. While they love to play with children and other pets, they should be supervised with little ones and need to be socialized properly when young.

Sceagle Breed History

Since the Sceagle is a designer breed that has only been around for about 20 years, they are still pretty rare and do not have a history yet. The backgrounds of the Beagle and the Scottish Terrier are used to get a history of the breed. The Beagle has been hunting and scenting in the woods of England since the 1300s. The breed is thought to have been created by mixing a Talbot Hound, Southern Hound, and North Country Beagle to get a gentle dog with the talent to scent and trail rabbits. According the the French, the word beagle means open throat and the name was given to the Beagle due to the way they sound when they bay or howl. In the early 20th century, the Beagle started being modified to make a more uniform size and personality for hunting and to be a good family pet. The Beagle became well-known when the breed was depicted in the Charlie Brown cartoons as Snoopy and American President Lyndon Johnson had a Beagle when he lived in the White House. The National Beagle Club was developed in 1888, two years after the breed was acknowledged by the American Kennel Club where the Beagle is the 5th most popular dog in the country. The Scottish Terrier originated in Scotland in the 18th century but it was first named the Aberdeen Terrier because the small town where it was first found. It was also nicknamed the little diehard because of its ability to keep going and going. They were originally bred from the West Highland White Terrier, Cairn Terrier, and Skye Terrier to hunt badgers, foxes, otter, and rabbits. However, they were soon found to be excellent companions and moved indoors with the family. They have been well-known as pets of presidents, in movies, and even as a token in the Monopoly game. In 1885, they were accepted by the American Kennel Club where they are the 58th most popular breed of dog.

Sceagle Breed Maintenance

Your Sceagle’s coat is typically short to medium and easy to care for but you have to be sure to brush your dog at least three or four times per week to prevent excess shedding. Use a firm bristle brush or slicker brush and make sure to get under the neck and legs as well as behind the ears and in the groin area. It is also good for their skin and circulation to brush them daily with a rubber curry mitt. You can bathe your dog as necessary and trim her nails about once a month or when needed.

Sceagle Temperament

This breed is a wonderful family dog that gets along well with other pets and children but must be socialized properly when they are young. They enjoy the attention they receive from just about anyone but they can be wary of strangers at first when they are suspicious of danger. This makes the Sceagle a good watchdog that will alert you and your family to any kind of threat. They are usually easy to train but some may be stubborn so it may take a bit of patience and a lot of positive reinforcement. Just be sure to stay firm and consistent and your dog should get the message.

Sceagle Activity Requirements

The Sceagle enjoys hunting and running so if you are a hunter, this sport will be great exercise for both of you. If not, be sure your dog gets out and running around at least 45 minutes to an hour each day. Dogs that do not get enough exercise can become anxious or bored and develop nasty habits like chewing on your property and tearing things up. Some of the Sceagle’s favorite things to do are to go for walks, swim, hike, play with other dogs at the dog park, and any dog would love to just play a game of fetch with their human.
