The Schnauffen is a hybrid dog. His parent breeds are the Affenpinscher and the Miniature Schnauzer. The Schnauffen is a small dog weighing no more than fifteen pounds at maturity. He is generally a healthy dog who can be expected to live at least to the age of twelve. He is suited to living in an apartment, or a home with or without a fenced-in yard. He should never be left outside for significant amounts of time. He is energetic and alert. He will require a good deal of grooming in order to maintain a healthy coat. He is a great family pet, and is considered good with kids. He is also good with other animals provided proper socialization is given.

Schnauffen Breed History

While there is not a lot of information on the Schnauffen, we can study his parent breeds to understand his origins. The Miniature Schnauzer hails from Germany. He was developed to be a ratter and guard dog on farms. It is believed that the Schnauzer was bred with the Miniature Pinscher, Affenpinscher, and Poodle in order to develop the Miniature Schnauzer that we know today. It is likely these breeds were introduced to make the Schnauzer a smaller dog. Although both great wars were difficult on dog breeds, the Miniature Schnauzer gained a lot of popularity after WWI, and he has remained just as popular even until today. The Affenpinscher dates back to the seventeenth century in Germany. He was developed to catch rats. As time went on, the Affenpinscher was bred to be a smaller dog who eventually became a companion dog. It is not known exactly what dogs factor into the Affenpinscher known today. The Pug may have been interbred with the Affenpinscher to decrease his original size as well as German Pinschers and the German Silky Pinscher. Like the Miniature Schnauzer, he has a rough coat and a bearded face. The Affenpinscher was officially accepted by the American Kennel Club in 1936.

Schnauffen Breed Appearance

The Schnauffen will likely look much like the Affenpinscher parent breed. He is small, well-balanced, squarely yet sturdily built. His compact body is still quite strong. He will likely be no taller than fourteen inches in height, and he may be reach fifteen pounds in weight at maturity. His color is most often black, but there are variations: black and silver, black and tan, salt and pepper, white, or parti-colored. His coat is often dense and rough, with a wiry outer coat and a short, soft undercoat. He will have the characteristic beard of the Miniature Schnauzer, and he may have hair that seems to obstruct his eyes.

Schnauffen Breed Maintenance

The Schnauffen will likely need a moderate amount of maintenance. He should be brushed daily to remove excess hair and dirt from his coat. Bathe him only when necessary. His natural oils will keep his coat shiny and healthy looking. Brush his teeth two or three a times a week to prevent the buildup of tartar; brush daily to prevent tooth decay and bad breath. Clip his nails every two weeks. Often, he will wear the nails down on his own. However, if you can hear his nails clicking on the tile floor, you know its time to trim his nails. The Schnauffen should never be clipped. You may need to trim the hair around his eyes from time to time. Keep in mind that the Schnauffen may suffer from entropion, so be sure to check his eyelashes for signs of inward growth.

The Schnauffen is a highly intelligent dog. He is energetic and alert. He never meets a stranger, and he makes friends easily. He gets along well with other animals, especially if he grows up with them. He also befriends humans easily as well. He enjoys spending time with his human family, and he would rather be with you than be anywhere else. He is very willing to please his owner, and, for this reason, he is very easy to train. Simple repetition and routine will help the Schnauffen understand what you expect of him. He is highly affectionate. He is also feisty and amusing. Although he can be somewhat independent, he will want to sit in your lap and may prefer to sleep in the bed with you.

Schnauffen Activity Requirements

The Schnauffen does not require much in the way of exercise to be happy. However, he will follow you from room to room, and he does enjoy being able to run freely inside the home. He can be happy in an apartment due to his size, but, if your apartment is small, you may want to give him at least one or two short bursts of exercise (such as a brisk walk around the neighborhood) each day. He will need forty-five minutes to an hour of activity daily. This will keep him healthy, and it will keep him from becoming bored and getting into mischief. He will enjoy trips to the dog park, and he will get along with the other dogs present. He will also benefit if you have a small, fenced-in yard that you can let him play in. Be sure to provide him with toys that promote mental stimulation as well as physical play.
