The Scotti Apso is a hybrid mix of the Lhasa Apso and the Scottish Terrier.  While the origin of both parent breeds is somewhat obscured, we do know they are both likely very old breeds in their respective countries.   The Scotti Apso hybrid, bred for companionship and guarding, is described as a sweet, affectionate, aggressive, friendly and intelligent great family dog, though not so much with small children who don't know the appropriate way to touch and play with them.  This hybrid is a great choice for those living in apartments and condos due to their small size and minimal need for exercise.

Scotti Apso Breed History

The Scotti Apso is a hybrid mix of the Lhasa Apso and the Scottish Terrier. This is a newer hybrid mix, since there is little to no information available on the hybrid itself, we'll get our historical information from the histories of the parent breeds. The Lhasa Apso, one of the most ancient of breeds, originating in Tibet as the Tibetan Apso, is said to have been result of breeding of mountain wolves and was domesticated somewhere around 800 B.C. Bred for tasks of watchdog and companionship for the monks in monasteries and temples, the Lhasa Apso was so highly valued that giving one as a gift was considered a great honor.  The breeding was kept close and quite pure over the centuries, being brought to England in 1901,  and introduced to the world as a companion breed.  In 1944, the name was  changed to Lhasa Apso.  The Lhasa Apso possesses keen intelligence, acute hearing, a sharp bark and the ability to distinguish between friend and foe, these skills making them perfect for the watchdog and companionship purposes for which they are currently valued, as well as making them quite valuable as service dogs for the deaf.  The Lhasa Apso came to the United States in the 1930's and was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1935, where it is the 71st most popular dog breed in their registry.  The Scottish Terrier, its heritage being quite obscured, hails from Scotland, as its name implies, though the exact origins are not known.  The various beliefs about the breed's origination are quite interesting to say the least, ranging from the belief that it can be traced back to 55 B.C to being developed in the 1800's. The Scottish Terrier, thought to be from the larger Skye Terrier group of terriers, was bred to hunt fox, rats and other vermin and could readily be found in mining communities, on farms, in gardens and homes.  Eventually this larger group of terriers were split up into separate breeds, one of which is the Scotti Apso's Scottish Terrier parent breed.  The Scottish Terrier was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1885 and is the 58th most popular canine breed in their registry. The Scotti Apso hybrid itself is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club, the Designer Breed Registry, the Designer Dogs Kennel Club, the Dog Registry of America. and the International Designer Canine Registry.

Scotti Apso Breed Appearance

The Scotti Apso is a hybrid mix of the Lhasa Apso and the Scottish Terrier and, as such, can inherit the appearance traits of one or both of the parent breeds.  Owners and breeders of the Scotti Apso are describing these adorable canines as standing about 10 to 11 inches tall and weighing 15 to 25 pounds.  The coat is described as thick, straight, medium in length and shedding moderately.  The coloring of the coat can be brown, black, brindle, gray and white.  The body is generally sturdily built, longer than it is tall, with straight legs and a tail that can be curled over the back or carried erect or with a slight curve and covered with longish hair with round compact feet.  The eyes are dark brown and black nose on a medium length muzzle with a scissors bite.  The ears can be pendant or erect and pointed, covered with hair of various lengths.

Scotti Apso Breed Maintenance

Your Scotti Apso hybrid falls into the moderate category of maintenance and shedding.  This will require a minimum of once a week brushing to remove loose hair, debris, mats and tangles and to distribute the natural oils through the coat to keep it healthy and beautiful. She is not hypoallergenic.  She'll need to have her ears checked weekly, cleaning them as needed with a cotton ball and an approved canine ear wash.  Check her toenails weekly while you're looking at her ears, trimming them as needed unless she is able to keep them worn down with her normal daily exercise routine.  The Scotti Apso, like all other canines, is recommended to have her teeth brushed at home two or three times a week to prevent periodontal disease development and the loss of teeth that can accompany it. She is in the low category for smell and drooling.

Scotti Apso Temperament

Your Scotti Apso is a hybrid mix of the Lhasa Apso and the Scottish Terrier and can inherit the temperament and personality traits of one or both of the parent breeds.  Owners and breeders of the Scotti Apso describe her temperament as usually affectionate and sweet, but they also note that she can be feisty.  This particular trait will likely warrant some supervision when she is in the presence of small children who don't know how to touch her and play with her safely. The Scotti Apso is not an excessive barker nor does she need lots of exercise, making her perfect for those owners or potential owners who live in apartments or condos or other homes which have noise and space restrictions. Because of the breeding of the Scottish parent, she has a moderate hunting/prey drive as well as a moderate tendency to wander.  These two traits will require you to keep her on leash when outdoors or outside an enclosed area to keep her safe. She's affectionate with the family and older kids, with the warning noted above about small children.  Appropriate socialization at an early age may help to moderate some of this trait.  She may not be quite so accepting of strangers, so be prepared for her to be wary with strangers until she is sure of your safety in their presence. She generally gets along well with other animals but keep in mind that one of her parent breeds was bred to hunt and eradicate vermin and this is a trait which may not be socialized or trained out of her.  She is intelligent, but she can also be stubborn and independent (a gift from the Scottish side), so you should expect her to be moderately easy to train with positive training methods done slowly, teaching the simple commands and building upon them. Keep it fun and interesting for her for the best results.

Scotti Apso Activity Requirements

Your Scotti Apso hybrid is a moderately active canine.  She is small, with short little legs so don't expect her to jump for joy when you take her jogging.  She has a great deal of energy but, because she is small, it won't take as much time or distance to manage that energy.  She'll love to go on daily walks with you, play and romp in the dog park or fenced back yard, play fetch, Frisbee and seek and find games outside or in the house.  She has moderate hunting/prey/wandering tendencies so it is quite important to keep her on leash when she's outside the house, fenced yard or other enclosed area.  If you don't leash her, you could find yourself chasing her down the street or across the field in pursuit of some small animal or that interesting scent that got her attention.  She is small and doesn't need extensive exercise, so she can live quite nicely in an apartment or condo, or family home with or without a fenced yard, provided appropriate exercise opportunities are afforded her, in an urban or rural setting.  She'll do best in moderate climates and will need extra protection for those temperature extremes.
