The Sharbo is a hybrid mix of the Boston Terrier and the Chinese Shar-Pei. This mix is an interesting combination as it unites two pure breeds which were originally bred specifically for pit and dog fighting in their respective countries, the United States and China. This hybrid is a great family pet if you desire loyal, loving companionship and a watchful, protective guard dog. The Sharbo hybrid's Boston Terrier parent is one of the first Non-Sporting breeds to be bred in the United States and is the first of about 10 breeds which were American-bred that are recognized by the American Kennel Club.

Sharbo Breed History

The Sharbo is a hybrid mix of the Boston Terrier and the Chinese Shar-Pei. While there is no information in regard to date and place of origin on the hybrid itself, we can likely assume that it originated in the United States during the late 1900's to early 2000's when interest in combining pure breeds for a variety of reasons increased. For background on the Sharbo, we'll look briefly at the histories of the parent breeds. The Boston Terrier originated in the United States, being one of the first Non-Sporting breeds to be American bred as well as one of only about 10 purebreds recognized by the American Kennel Club as being "American bred". The Boston Terrier, also known as "The American Gentleman", is believed to have originated in the 1800's, though the exact details of its origination are varied, and, as its name implies, came from Boston, Massachusetts, some time in the 1800's. The Boston's ancestry is thought to include Bulldogs, Terriers and possibly some French Bulldog. They were bred specifically for purposes of pit dog fighting and bull-baiting, popular sources of entertainment in those days but which have been outlawed. Today, the Boston is utilized as a family pet, companion and watchdog. The Boston Terrier was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1893 and it is the 21st most popular breed in their registry. The Chinese Shar-Pei is a breed which, as its name implies, originated in China and is a very old breed. There aren't sufficiently documented records for dogs coming from China, so their approximate date of origination is very obscured. The Shar-Pei was utilized by the peasants of southern China for hunting, herding and protection, however, the upper classes used them for a type of entertainment which has since been abolished and outlawed...that entertainment was pit dog fighting. The Shar-Pei breed all but died out during the Communist revolution and today is one of the most rare of breeds of canine. The Chinese Shar-Pei of today is being utilized as a family pet, companion, guard dog and watchdog. It was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1962 and is the 61st most popular breed in its registry. The Sharbo hybrid itself is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club, the Designer Breed Registry, the Designer Dogs Kennel Club, the Dog Registry of America, and the International Designer Canine Registry.

Sharbo Breed Appearance

The Sharbo is a hybrid mix of the Boston Terrier and the Chinese Shar-Pei and, as such, can inherit appearance traits of one or both parent breeds. Breeders and owners of the Sharbo describe him as standing 15 to 20 inches tall and weighing 30 to 50 pounds. He is a medium-sized dog with a strong body, a square head and large generally brown eyes and larger pointed floppy ears, usually flopping downward. His coat is described as straight, short, coarse or silky with the most common colors being brown, brindle, white, black and golden. His tail could be of varying length, either very short and held close to the rump or longer and curling over his back. His bite will likely be scissors or undershot enough to square off the muzzle with a tongue which could be purple or black in color. His feet can be small or medium in size and compact with short toenails.

Sharbo Breed Maintenance

The Sharbo hybrid falls into the low to moderate category of maintenance, with minimal shedding requiring only weekly brushing. His coat is not hypoallergenic. Because of the genetics from the Shar-Pei parent, you may have to bathe him more often than other breeds. The recommendations for the Shar-Pei are for bi-weekly bathing and less often for the Boston. The Shar-Pei parent also contributes a tendency toward ear infections, making those weekly ear checks very important. Be sure to clean them as needed with a cotton ball and an approved canine ear wash. The toenails also need to be checked once or twice a month, trimming as needed unless he is able to keep them worn down with his normal exercise regimen. His teeth need to be brushed at home two or three times a week at a minimum to prevent periodontal disease development and the tooth loss known to accompany it. He falls into a low category for drooling but a moderate one for smell due to the Shar-Pei genetics. He is a very active canine, moving constantly it seems, and will require 1 to 2 hours of daily exercise.

Sharbo Temperament

The Sharbo is a hybrid mix of the Boston Terrier and the Chinese Shar-Pei and, accordingly, can inherit its personality and temperament traits from one or both parent breeds. Breeders and owners of the Sharbo describe his temperament and personality as sweet, playful and intelligent but he also has aggression in his personality, especially when he is protecting his human family. He will likely be moderately kid friendly with early socialization being very important to assure he'll adapt to kids, strangers, the family cat and other dogs. He'll be friendly and loving with his human family, loving lots of your attention and giving you lots of his. He is pretty laid back under normal circumstances and will be happy running and playing with you or just sitting to cuddle on the couch beside you. He can also be jealous of other dogs or jealous when they are getting something he thinks he deserves or should have. These are traits which can be modified with appropriate socialization. He has a high hunting drive due to his hunting heritage which comes from both parent breeds. This is important to remember when he interacts with other dogs or animals. He'll likely be wary of strangers until he understands that there is no danger to his human family. He will likely be fairly easy to train, provided you can establish who's in charge from the very beginning. If this is not done, you will likely find yourself battling this in almost everything he does.

Sharbo Activity Requirements

The Sharbo hybrid is said to be a constant mover. That being said, you can expect that he'll have a great deal of energy which will need to be managed by 1 to 2 hours of exercise each and every day. This exercise activity can come in the form of long daily walks, periods of playtime in the dog park or fenced yard, interactive games of fetch, Frisbee, fly ball, earth dog activities, obedience training and agility training. His hunting/prey drive is strong, so be sure to keep him on leash whenever he is outside the house, fenced yard or other safe enclosure, unless part of your daily exercise routine is planned to include chasing him down the street, around the block or through the woods in pursuit of a small animal or unusual scent which has attracted his attention. He's not an excessive barker, becoming verbal only when necessary, so he'll do well in an apartment or condo unless there is a noise restriction in place. In the case of any type of housing accommodation, it is vital, for his health and happiness, that he be exercised appropriately to avoid the annoying destructive habits which can develop from boredom. He can also live quite nicely in a family home with or without a fenced yard in an urban or rural setting. He is best suited to moderate or temperate climates, with additional protection and precautions being taken when temperatures are hotter or colder.

Paco is the best thing that happened to us! He is really great with children, other dogs, and rarely barks. He loves meeting new people and is very friendly around strangers. Potty training has been difficult but he is only 11 weeks, fingers crossed we get this down soon!! The literal love of our lives, we got so lucky.
