Sheprador Breed History

The Sheprador is a new designer hybrid and it does not have a history so it is best to look at the backgrounds of the Australian Shepherd and Labrador Retriever. The Australian Shepherd originated in America in the 1800s from the Basque Shepherd, to be a herding dog. They are thought to have gotten their name because they were bred from dogs that came from Australia with the Basque people. They were immediately well-known for their amazing ability to get cattle and sheep to do whatever they wanted them to. They are also used for search and rescue, therapy, drug detecting, and guiding. During the 1950s, they became even more popular after being used in movies and rodeos as a trick dog. Seven years later, the Australian Shepherd Club of America was developed and soon became the largest registry of Australian Shepherds in America. However, it took another 36 years before the breed was accepted by the American Kennel Club. The Labrador Retriever began as what was then called the Saint John’s Water Dog in Newfoundland, Canada in the 18th century. They were popular with fishermen who used them to help pull in their nets and retrieve the ones that got away. They were named after the Labrador Sea, which is where they were developed. They were exported to England in the 1820s by the Earl of Malmesbury. The breed all but disappeared in Newfoundland because a strict law made it illegal to have a female Labrador Retriever. However, the breed kept growing in England and were noticed in the 1900s in America where they have been the number one dog breed since 1917.

The Sheprador breed can range from 22 to 26 inches tall and weigh between 40 and 80 pounds on average. Their coat is of medium length and density, water resistant, and can come in a multitude of colors such as merle, brindle, speckled, pied, black, chocolate, tan, blue, red, white, or any mix of these colors. The Sheprador has long legs, and a medium length tail that is usually wagging or curled up over their back.

Sheprador Breed Maintenance

Your Sheprador will need to be brushed at least three or four times per week with a comb and good quality bristle or pin brush. They have a thick coat that is easily matted so you may also need a dematting tool as well. They also tend to shed on a regular basis so you need to brush your dog often to prevent excessive hair on your furniture and clothing. You should only bathe your Sheprador as needed with a mild conditioning shampoo approved by your veterinary care provider. Trim your dog’s toenails and clean her ears when needed as well. The teeth are not to be neglected; brushing them a few times a week will prevent sore gums and decay of the teeth.

Sheprador Temperament

This breed makes a great family pet because they love children and other pets, they are gentle and mild mannered, and can be protective and loyal as well. They are alert and intelligent enough to be considered a good watchdog and will protect the family from anything or anyone they see as a threat. They can be trained easily and follow instructions well but may try to herd your children or other animals if not trained properly, so you have to be consistent. If the Sheprador gets the proper training and socialization, you will have an excellent companion and protector.

Sheprador Activity Requirements

Like other large dogs, it is best if your Sheprador has a large fenced yard to play in but will also do well if you are able to take her for a couple of walks every day. This breed needs about 60 to 90 minutes of vigorous exercise daily to stay healthy and prevent obesity and boredom. Dogs that do not get enough exercise can become anxious or aggressive and end up with behavioral problems. Some of the activities that your Sheprador may enjoy include agility or obstacle course training, playing flyball and frisbee, hunting or herding, swimming, or playing with other dogs at the dog park.

Porter is a friendly and very cheeky dog. He knows when he is doing something naughty like digging in our garden and will run away to avoid a talking to. He is good to train, picks up stuff very easily but his cheeky side sometimes gets in the way of this. He has a great amount of energy, just needs to learn to relax and sleep more in the day whilst we are working at home, this should come with age.
