Slovensky Cuvac

The Slovensky Cuvac’s ancestry can be traced back to the Arctic wolf. The Artic wolf dates back to pre-ice age. Fossils found in mountainous regions in Europe near the edge of glaciers verify the existence of the Arctic wolf. These regions include the Balkans, the Caucasus, the Carpathians and the Rodope Mountains including the Abruzzi, Alps and Pyrenees. Remains of the Slovensky Cuvac were also found in these regions and in Scandinavia by a Swedish explorer named Wahlenberg. The Slovensky Cuvac was used extensively by the Slovak mountain people to guard livestock and property, pull carts and be a companion. The Slovak mountain people were nomadic and were a free people not enslaved by medieval forced labor. They made sheep’s cheese and other goods to sell and trade without having to be forced into labor to survive. These people became known as Wallachischer Bund and they were mainly located in Kaschau. These people were always with their large mountain dogs and throughout history; these dogs are depicted with them. The Slovensky Cuvac began to find his way into other regions when visitors to the region would come to buy cheese and other goods and become enamored with the fluffy, densely coated white puppies. He became a well-loved companion to people in the low-lands. The official stud book for the Slovensky Cuvac was founded more than thirty years ago by Anton Hruza, a professor at the Brno Veterinary College. The official breed club for the Slovensky Cuvac  was located in Bratislava. The first established kennel for the Slovensky Cuvac was called Ze zlaté studny or “of the Golden Fountain”.
