Smooth Fox Terrier

The Smooth Foxton is a small designer dog and a cross between a Boston Terrier and a Smooth Fox Terrier. Their average lifespan is 15 years and they are intelligent, lively dogs who are loyal and affectionate family pets. They are great with children but can be a little scrappy with other dogs, especially those of the same sex. Early socialization and training will help with this especially if they are in a multi-dog household. Being Terriers, they may chase cats and other small animals they may perceive as prey. They make good watchdogs although are not aggressive to people. They are energetic dogs who love to be around the family. They love food and will eat whatever they can, so be careful not to let your pet get overweight. Common colors are black, white, tan and brindle. They are easy to groom with their short, dense and smooth coats.

Smooth Foxton Breed History

The Smooth Foxton is a hybrid breed that was developed by crossing a Boston Terrier and a Smooth Fox Terrier. Smooth Fox Terriers were bred to run with foxhound packs during the 18th century in England. They were sometimes carried in a bag by one of the hunters on horseback who was called the “terrier man”. Most Terrier-type dogs that could bolt a fox from its hole were referred to as a Fox Terrier in those days and hunters preferred using white dogs so they wouldn’t mistake the dog for a fox. The Smooth Fox Terrier was also used to hunt and retrieve birds and track deer. Bull Terriers, Greyhounds and Beagles are among their ancestors. The Smooth Fox Terrier and Wire Fox Terrier were initially regarded as one breed but have been regarded as separate breeds since 1985. The chief differences are in coat and head shape, with the Smooth’s being more V-shaped. The Smooth was skilled at tricks which saw him gain popularity in performance troupes and in circuses. A dog called Nipper from Bristol in England was the model for a painting by Francis Barraud, called “His Master’s Voice” which shows a black and white Terrier peering into the horn of a phonograph. With their tuxedo-like markings, Boston Terriers are often referred to as an “American Gentleman”. The original intention was to breed the dog for pit fighting - a far cry from the affectionate, child-friendly dog he is today. They originated in the United States around 1870 when William O'Brien of Boston sold a dog named Judge to Robert C. Hooper, also of Boston. Boston Terriers are believed to be a cross between an English Bulldog and a white English Terrier and are known for snoring and grunting. They were initially classified as Bull Terriers when competing, but in 1891 when the Boston Terrier Club of America was established the name was changed to the Boston Terrier, taking the name of the city where the breed originated.

Smooth Foxton Breed Appearance

The Smooth Foxton is a compact little dog weighing up to 25 pounds and with a height of up to 15 inches. Common colors are black, white, tan and brindle and they have short, dense and smooth coats. They may have a tuxedo-patterning of the Boston Terrier or be mostly white with black and tan markings. A Smooth Fox Terrier has a long sleek face compared to the short squat face of the Boston Terrier so the Smooth Foxton’s is likely to be somewhere in between. Their dark eyes may protrude somewhat and the ears may be erect or fold forward onto the face. Their legs are sturdy and they have a feisty, purposeful gait.

Smooth Foxton Breed Maintenance

When it comes to grooming, the Smooth Foxton is one of the easiest dogs to keep looking good. They don’t shed much, so weekly brushing is more than enough to keep them looking neat and to remove any loose hair. They don’t have a strong doggy odor so bathing is only needed occasionally. Brushing the teeth daily is a good habit to get into to prevent any dental disease and to keep the breath fresh. Also, check the ears weekly for any dirt or signs of infection. If your pet doesn’t wear his nails down through normal exercise you should trim them when needed.

Smooth Foxton Temperament

The Smooth Foxton is affectionate and protective and loves nothing more than being around his family. They don’t like being alone and can suffer from separation anxiety so would do best with a family where someone is home most of the time or with an active retired senior. They are great with children but can be difficult with other dogs and have been known to pick fights. Early training and socialization will help to prevent this. They are known to bark to warn you when a stranger appears so are good watchdogs but are not aggressive dogs. They are intelligent canines, so easy to train and will respond best to praise and positive reinforcement. Treats will also work well as they love food but make sure they are healthy ones. Keeping your pet mentally and physically stimulated is the best way to avoid bad behavior like digging or nuisance barking. These are energetic fun-loving dogs who love to play.

Smooth Foxton Activity Requirements

Like all Terriers, the Smooth Foxton is active and lively and will always be on the go. They will love a daily walk, keep up with you on a hike and can spend hours chasing a ball. It is just as well they are so active as they love to eat so it keeps their weight down and helps keep them fit and healthy. They will love to have a garden to run around in but can adapt to living in an apartment provided they are taken out daily for exercise. They can be sensitive to the heat and the cold so make sure exercise sessions take place early in the morning or the evening and don’t leave them outside when the temperature falls.
