The Spreagle is a hybrid mix of the Beagle and the English Springer Spaniel.  This breed combination mixes two pure breeds which have been developed for hunting and tracking...and...oh what a wonderful combination has resulted! With the world famous nose of the Beagle parent and the versatile talents of the English Springer Spaniel parent, if you have a hunter in the house, this medium-sized canine will fit in perfectly.  Even if there are no hunters in this family, maybe he can help you find your car keys or little Tommy's backpack or Susie's special blue sweater or even hubby's long needle-nose pliers that he hasn't seen in months.  He will also find his way into the hearts of each and every member of the family (any maybe the neighbor's, too?).

Spreagle Breed History

The Spreagle is a hybrid mix of the Beagle and the English Springer Spaniel.  The place and approximate date of origination is unavailable on this hybrid, but we can most likely assume that the Spreagle was developed in the United States, sometime in the late 1900's or the early 2000's when interest in mixing pure breeds for numerous reasons became more popular.  The histories of the parent breeds will shine more light upon this interesting and lovable hybrid mix.  The Beagle is a breed which can be traced back to the days of King Arthur in Britain (before the time of the Romans) and is believed to be a contributor to most, if not all, hound breeds who came after.  The Beagle has a world renowned reputation for having the most scent sensitive nose in the whole canine world.  He is now and always has been a scent hound, those instincts still being extremely strong in the Beagle that we see today. He was bred to hunt hares and rabbits then and, today, he continues to be utilized, not only in hunting and tracking activities and competitions, but also as a beloved companion and furry family member. The Beagle was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1885 and he is the 5th most popular breed in that registry.  The English Springer Spaniel originated, as his name implies, in England and can be traced back to images depicted in a variety of artwork during the 16th and 17th centuries.  Hunting back then was much different than it is today, since guns hadn't been invented yet, hunting with hawks or nets to capture and kill their prey.  The English Springer Spaniel was bred to hunt and flush or spring out game and then to retrieve them.  Today, the Springer is bred for different functions; one variety being bred for conformation shows while the other is bred for performance in the field.  There are few Springers who are found to perform in both areas.  The English Springer Spaniel was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1910 and is the 26th most popular breed in their registry.  The Spreagle hybrid itself is recognized by the Dog Registry of America.

Spreagle Breed Appearance

Your Spreagle hybrid is a mix of the Beagle and the English Springer Spaniel and, as such, can inherit the appearance traits of one or both parent breeds.  Breeders and owners of the Spreagle hybrid describe him as weighing about 40 pounds and standing about 21 inches tall, having a thick, silky coat which is quite prone to shedding with the common colors being brown, black and white. His tail can be varying in length and carried curled over the back or hanging down. His eyes could be brown or hazel, his nose black and his ears can be medium or long in length and flop down close to the head.

Spreagle Breed Maintenance

Your Spreagle hybrid falls into the moderate category of maintenance and shedding.  His coat is not hypoallergenic.  Since he's in the moderate shedding category, you should expect to need to brush him several times a week and probably increase your vacuuming frequency a bit.  He won't need to be bathed unless he needs it due to accumulated dirt or doggy smell.  He'll need to have his ears checked on a weekly basis, cleaning them as needed with a cotton ball and an approved canine ear wash.  Be sure to check his toenails at least once a month, trimming them as needed unless he is able to keep them worn down with his normal exercise activities.  He has a high tendency to hunt and wander, so be sure to keep him on leash for his own safety when he's outside the house, fenced yard or other safe enclosure.  He can be a frequent barker; this could be an issue for those who live in noise restricted areas.  He is an active canine who will need at least 2 hours per day of moderate exercise to keep him fit, healthy and happy.

Spreagle Temperament

Your Spreagle hybrid is a mix of the Beagle and the English Springer Spaniel and, as such, can have the temperament and personality traits of either or both parent breeds.  Owners and breeders of the the Spreagle hybrid describe him as fun-loving, loyal and a great companion for children.  Additionally, his parent breeds can contribute traits like: friendliness, affection, gentleness, alertness, energy, independence, intelligence, liveliness, sweetness and socialness. Your Spreagle hybrid is known to bark an alert when people approach his home, this trait makes him a great watchdog.  He comes from active parent breeds, so he'll need to be exercised regularly to manage those energy levels to avoid the annoying and frustrating destructive behaviors which are known to accompany boredom in a clever canine.  Because he is an intelligent canine, he will need to be challenged both physically as well as mentally when you consider his exercise regimen.  He has an independent streak so, for those of you who are new or novice dog owners, be aware of the importance of firmly and lovingly establishing who's in charge as early as possible in your relationship with him. This independence will likely cause him to be a challenge in training.  Just be patient, kind and encouraging, beginning with the basics and building upon them using positive training and encouragement methods.  He will need to be appropriately socialized to ensure that he's good with the kids, the family cat and other dogs.  Expect that he will alert you of the approach of strangers and be wary of them until he senses there is no danger to his human family, though once that has been established in his mind, he will likely warm up to them quite nicely.

Spreagle Activity Requirements

Your Spreagle hybrid is an active canine who will need at least 2 hours of daily exercise to stay fit, happy and healthy both mentally and physically.  That exercise can be in the form of several long daily walks or jogs, playtime in the dog park or fenced yard or other safe enclosure, interactive games of fetch, Frisbee, flyball, earth dog activities, agility training, obedience training and seek and find games both inside the house as well as outside.  He is a canine who has a high degree of hunting/prey instinct coupled with a high tendency to wander.  So, keeping him on leash when outside the house, fenced yard or other safe enclosure is highly recommended, unless, you have figured into your exercise regimen the energy and time needed for chasing him down the street, through the neighborhood backyards or through the woods and streams as he pursues a small animal or interesting scent which has caught his attention.  Depending on which breed parent has the most influence in his size in the bio mix, he may or may not adapt well to apartment or condo living, his barking tendency also needing to be considered in these types of living arrangements.  He can adapt quite well, however, to a family home with or without a fenced yard, in an urban or rural setting in a temperate climate in which he is provided with ample additional protection in the temperature extremes.

Duncan is such a rewarding dog! We rescued him in December of 2020 (he was 5 years old at the time). He had gone through two returns and I cannot imagine why. When we first got him he was very shy and reserved, maybe even scared of us. After a few weeks he started to open up and began trusting us. Now we he gives us nothing but love! He is still reserved with strangers and declines to be pet, but will accept treats and likes to sniff people. He's not aggressive, just selective. I think it's interesting that everyone describes their spreagle as high energy because Duncan could not be lazier! I take him with me to work and we take a few walks around the campus, and that seems to be all he needs as he'll fall asleep on his bed as soon as we get back to our office. He'll get the "zoomies" when he's excited, but for the most part he's content napping on the bed or couch, sometimes staring out the window. Duncan is so loving and affectionate. Definitely attention needy (but just from his two humans). He's been such a joy to have and I cannot fathom why someone would give him up to a shelter.

Our Spreagle is a SUPER SHEDDER & needs his ears regularly seeing to. He’s full of energy, but will be very much more obedient & relaxed after his walk which is minimum an hour. Very playful, very gentle, very needy of attention, but will listen to a no if it’s said firmly. Perfect friend for our 5 yr old daughter & they love to cuddle - even if she does get covered in hair! Has learned a bunch of tricks, & his call & response is pretty good now after a year of training. He goes off leash on the beach & in the woods/garden etc, loves chasing foxes & rabbits & is obsessed with smelling EVERYTHING. Big-time begger so we don’t respond to that with our own food, but treat him often & he loves a bone. An all-round wonderful dog.

Oliver has a lot of energy. Love going for walks, hikes, and playing in the pond. Spends hours outside tracking bunny and squirrel in his 5 acre underground fence. Very intelligent. Loves to snuggle when in house. Very protective of house and yard area when visitors come until he gets to know and trust them.

Best dog ever! Very smart...over 100 word vocabulary. Stubborn, but ultimately obedient. Very affectionate...wants to be with owners. He was a rescue at 9 months old. Have had him for 7 years. Not ONE pee or poop accident in the house...even wakes us up if he feels sick (rarely) and needs to go outside. Very enthusiastic greeter of guests, but calms down quickly. Very healthy and spry; a beautiful dog...solid liver color with blonde feathering in summer. Bays when happy/excited; barks as warning only. He's quite large, 67 lbs., but not at all overweight...very muscular. His favorite treats are baby carrots! Very recently developed a sudden fear of the oven when it's turned on. Goes upstairs and waits until it's off; refuses offers of favorite foods or treats and avoid the kitchen when oven is on. Does not tremble or show other signs of fear.

We only have Izzy a short time. Previously,She was a farmyard dog with a low level of human interaction and socialization and was very timid and shy at first. She is starting to relax a bit more and her personality is starting to shine through. Our last dog was a springer spaniel called Ozzie who we rescued at age 2 and had 12 wonderful years together before he passed away in December 2017.

Everyone who meets Rocket falls in love. He has a very unique personality even for his breed. He hardly ever barks, especially not when indoors. Will sit by the door to let you know when he needs to go outside. He is a great car dog. He can ride in the car for hours and he loves it. He just sits and doesn’t make any noise, won’t even stick his head out of the window. 10/10 dog. affectionate, obedient, loyal, and adorable.

Darwin is an amazingly clever dog. He can learn any new word in a matter of minutes. He loves playing with all of his toys and will bring them to you when he fancies some playtime. He is very active and always prefers a run rather than a walk. He is so friendly and loves to be around people. Very loyal companion and follows me around all day everyday wanting to be involved in whatever I am doing. He asks to go outside when he needs toilet time. He loves to curl up on the sofa after a day of playing and snooze while we watch tv. Perfect dog. My best friend.

like the duracel bunny on anphetamines!!! been out running for 8 hours get home and brings you a ball to play fetch! eats everyones underwear and steals food from our plate if we dont watch out! very lovable and very naughty (in a fun way)! our example needs far more than 2 hours a day I'd say at least double that at a minimum! this doggo is not for a first time dog owner and if you neglect the extreme energy that needs burning, be prepared for the destruction this little doggo can wreak on you house and belongings! She will be walked or the house gets it! extremely gentle nature and gets jealous of our other dog where cuddles are involved!

We’ve had Charlie since he was 14 weeks old. He’s very smart, easy to train, learns tricks in minutes. He’ll play fetch for an hour but doesn’t like to relinquish the toy. He barks when someone comes to the door or a dog is near his yard. Super affectionate, sweet, loves to play with other dogs but does get jealous if they get attention. Definitely a shedder! He just loves to be with us or go with us wherever we go. He does need to be leashed at all times because if he sees another dog or a squirrel he’s gone. A wonderful dog!

Needs lots of attention! Whether it's walks, or play! That min 2 hours a days sounds about right. He hates to be left alone. Very jealous if we pet other dogs, sometimes even eachother (my boyfriend and I). The attention needs to be on him at all times. Very gentle and loving. He loves to hunt of course, so off leash walks in the woods so he wont get to the street is a must to spend that energy and stimulate him. He loves to swim, so fetch on land and in water! And hes also quite the fisher. Lasers are not only for cats! He loves it, but gets really loud when we play! And he loves balloons! Food obsessed so we need to be strict with him, he had been overweight for a while, on and off diets. We found that feeding him less more often was the best. Hes a begger and will steal food if he can reach! At 8 years old, he hasnt slowed down all that much. Still wrestles with daddy every night for at least 30 mins!
