Staffordshire Bull Terrier
American Pit Bull Terrier

The Staffy Bull Pit is uncommon as a designer dog, although the unintentional crossbreed is probably quite common. This hybrid, registerable as a Staffy Bull Pit only with the Dog Registry of America, is essentially the combination of two variations on the same dog; the American Staffordshire Terrier as it is recognized here in the United States and the American Pit Bull Terrier as it is recognized in the United Kingdom. As this is not a common hybrid, special arrangements may need to be made if you want a dog that has parents that are officially registered on both sides of the family tree. Bull Terriers of all sorts should be well socialized and obedience training should start at an early age in order to encourage a healthy and balanced disposition in your dog.

Staffy Bull Pit Breed History

The American Staffordshire Terrier and the American Pit Bull Terrier are now considered to be two separate dog breeds, the first recognized by the American Kennel Club in the United States and the second recognized by the United Kennel Club in England, but their respective breed standards are written as such that some individual dogs are able to be dually registered in both countries. Before differing breeding focuses separated these two dog breeds when the registrations were split, they came from essentially the same ancestry. These dogs trace their earliest ancestry to England in the 1700s to the old style English Bulldogs which were crossed with various Terrier dogs to add agility and the ability to think quickly and independently. The results of these pairings were known as bull-and-terriers, extremely well-muscled but agile dogs that were courageous and strong enough to assist with controlling bulls, to help hunters in taking down wild boar and bear, and eventually, to fight one another to the death. When these dogs were initially imported to the United States in the 1800s, they were imported mainly as fighting dogs, and breeders focused on creating a larger and heavier animal, which was registered with the United Kennel Club as an American Pit Bull Terrier in 1898, but the American Kennel Club refused to recognize the breed as they wanted to distance themselves from the history of dog fighting. In 1936, they recognized the American Staffordshire Terrier, which has stricter standards regarding size and coloration. Other than dogs that are dually registered in both countries, these two breeds have been bred separately since that time.

Staffy Bull Pit Breed Appearance

The Staffy Bull Pit is a medium-sized dog with a solid build and compact, well-defined musculature. They have a fairly large, solid head with a broad flat skull and wide, deep muzzle with a great deal of jaw strength and clean, straight lips rather than pendulous ones. They have round or almond shaped eyes that are usually a darker brown, but thanks to the inclusion of the more permissive standard of the American Pit Bull, may occasionally come in any color except blue. Their natural ears are short and held in either a rose or half prick configuration, and are generally preferred over cropped ears for both breeds. Their shoulders and necks are particularly well-muscled in comparison to other breeds and their legs should be straight with thick, round bones. This hybrid sports a single layer of short, stiff fur that can come in any color, although merle is discouraged due to deafness and blindness that often accompanies this coloration.

Staffy Bull Pit Breed Maintenance

The Staffy Bull Pit does not typically require a great deal of grooming effort and it’s coat can be kept clean and healthy with minimal fuss. Unless your dog gets into something particularly messy or smelly, baths are only required a few times a year and are a rather simple affair, and a weekly brushing session with a slicker brush or grooming glove is adequate to keep the fur healthy and shiny. It is important to note that these dogs are prone to skin problems and the skin should be closely examined each time that you groom your dog to ensure any disorders or infections are addressed right away.

Staffy Bull Pit Temperament

Since the blood sport of dog fighting was outlawed in most countries by the late 1800s, most quality breeders of both American Staffordshire and American Pit Bull Terriers have concentrated on creating a breed that is not only athletic and powerful, but gentle, loving, and loyal. These dogs are extremely trusting of their owners and can be quite eager to learn, but most have a short attention span, so training sessions should be kept short and pleasant, ideally ending just before they are ready to quit. While these dogs have been bred to have balanced and easy-going temperaments for many decades it is extremely important to supervise all interactions between these dogs and children, especially younger children and toddlers, as Staffy Bull Pits are often unaware of how strong they are and this can have disastrous results. While a well-bred canine of this type may actually be too friendly with humans to make a suitable guard dog for property, they can be quite protective of their humans and they are often combative with other canines, frequently requiring extensive socialization in order to be amicable around other dogs. The presence of multiple canines may make interactions with these dogs less predictable and therefore less controlled. It is important to do your homework when choosing a puppy of this type as some lines of both American Staffordshire Terrier and American Pit Bull Terrier may still retain their aggressiveness and fighting instincts.

Staffy Bull Pit Activity Requirements

This is an active and athletic dog, requiring a minimum of an hour a day of vigorous activity in order to maintain their impressive physique. While these hybrids are perfectly happy with short jogs, long walks, and rough and tumble games of fetch, they are also quite good at other activities like frisbee, flyball, and even tracking trials. Some owners may choose to engage their dogs in weight pulling exercises, but this activity should be undertaken with extreme caution as these dogs are known to dangerously overextend themselves. This canine’s single layer coat and sensitive skin may make them more susceptible to damage from UV light so canine sunblock should be utilized, particularly for white or light colored dogs and dogs with sensitive skin or skin conditions.

She came to me very timid and unwell. she may have a fungal infection in her nose bc her last owners didn't really care about her. she's got so many scars and sores on her, she's still such a young puppy, she's so scared of people. she doesn't know how to trust.

Bubba is full of love and truly believes she’s a lap dog, sometimes not realising her size... she loves running with us and especially with other dogs! She’s quite vocal when playing tug of war and we are slowly learning not to jump up for attention- which is hard not to give her! She’s got such a sweet nature and so much love to give. Couldn’t imagine life without her!

She is the most gentle even tempered dog I’ve ever had. She is protective if we are home and a stranger approaches, but in public she is relaxed and very social. She loves other dogs, cats, children and adults. Would definitely recommend as a family dog.

She is very affectionate. I already had a 4 year old chow retriever mix and also have a 3 year old daughter so was a little skeptical about introducing her to the household bit she's just as energetic and playful as both. She loves to cuddle up with me as well as my daughter. She follows us everywhere.

Gaddafi is the most loving dog I have ever met . I bred him my self and cared for him and his 10 siblings for 7 weeks before the rest were adopted. However I couldn’t let Gaddafi go this dog was exceptionally mannered he stood out from the litter . With his lurking eyes and calm temperament always sleeping but when he played he was always so affectionate and loved to be coddled . He never misses an opportunity to crawl next to me sometimes right up on me and coil himself into a ball . He absolutely loves sticks and playing fetch and he was so easy to train .

We adopted Bronx when he was 4.5 years old. He had been through four other homes prior to us, due to resource guarding and dog fighting. He now lives with three other small dogs, five cats, and a plethora of other animals. Quick to learn, but slow to let go of old habits, he has improved tremendously since being with us. Bronx adores people and other animals, is extremely lively, and incredibly affectionate. His smile is infectious, and we absolutely adore him.
