The Toy Fox Beagle is a cross between a Beagle and a Toy Fox Terrier. Bred from dogs that are well-known for their hunting abilities, this hybrid dog has all the best traits of its parents. They are skilled hunters and curious by nature. They also inherit the Beagle’s loving, happy-go-lucky nature, and they make excellent companions and family pets. Weighing in at 25 pounds or less and standing no more than 15 inches tall, they are small enough to do well in most environments. They have short, smooth, soft coats in shades of black, brown and white. These small dogs have plenty of energy, and they need a lot of space to run and explore. As natural hunters and trackers, they should be kept leashed or in fenced-in yards to prevent wandering.

Toy Fox Beagle Breed History

Like most hybrid breeds, very little of the Toy Fox Beagle’s history is known. It is likely, however, that the two dogs were mixed to combine the best traits of the Beagle and the Toy Fox Terrier in one dog. The Beagle originated in England in the early 1800s and was bred to hunt and trail rabbits. As a scent hound, the Beagle is happiest when he has an opportunity to follow his nose. The modern Beagle was developed by crossing the Talbot Hound, the North Country Beagle and the Southern Hound. The breed arrived in the United States in the 1840s and was kept strictly for hunting purposes. The Beagle’s happy, friendly disposition quickly helped him win his way into the hearts of many families and became popular as a companion animal. The Beagle also became well-known in pop culture, with Snoopy being the most widely recognized member of the breed. The American Kennel Club officially recognized the breed in 1885, and the National Beagle Club was founded in 1888. The Toy Fox Terrier originated in the early 1900s. A direct descendant of the Smooth Fox Terrier, this breed was created in the United States to help get rid of rats and other vermin. Modern hunters still use this breed to flush foxes from their dens. Due to their small size and agility, Toy Fox Terriers were also frequently used in traveling circuses. The breed was first registered by the United Kennel Club in 1936, and in 1949, the National Toy Fox Terrier Association was founded. It was not until 2003, however, that the breed became officially recognized by the American Kennel Club.

Toy Fox Beagle Breed Appearance

The Toy Fox Beagle is a small to medium sized dog with a short, smooth, soft coat. They are normally brown, black and white in color and their markings are often similar to the Beagle parent’s. The head is elongated, and the muzzle ends in a small, dark nose. The eyes are round and dark, much like those of the Beagle. They also have the floppy ears that are characteristic of the Beagle. Their long tails generally hang low, and they have athletic, stout bodies. The legs are proportionate in length to the body and end in small but proportionate paws.

Toy Fox Beagle Breed Maintenance

Toy Fox Beagles have coats that are much easier to maintain than the coats of many other breeds. They are moderate to frequent shedders and need to be brushed at least weekly to remove dead hair. Some tend to have a moderate odor due to their Beagle ancestry, but they should only be bathed as needed. Bathing too frequently may lead to an overproduction of oil that could make the problem worse. Trim your Toy Fox Beagle’s nails every four weeks or so to prevent overgrowth. Their teeth should be brushed weekly. Their long, floppy ears are susceptible to infections, so they should be cleaned and inspected weekly.

Toy Fox Beagle Temperament

The Toy Fox Beagle inherits many wonderful traits from its parents. It is sweet and loving like the Beagle yet brave and curious like the Toy Fox Terrier. Alert and energetic, they make ideal family pets and companions. Because of their high energy levels, they do especially well with children and active owners. They are also eager to please and intelligent, so they respond well to positive training. Their loving nature means they warm up quickly to strangers, making them less-than-ideal guard dogs. The hunting and tracking instincts present in both parent breeds are passed down to the Toy Fox Beagle, making him an excellent hunter.

Toy Fox Beagle Activity Requirements

Both the Beagle and the Toy Fox Terrier are moderately active and energetic breeds. When kept indoors, they are generally capable of entertaining themselves enough to meet their daily exercise needs. They do well in most environments – including small apartments – due to their compact size. These dogs do love exploring outside, though, and will be happiest if able to go for 30 to 45-minute walks each day. They enjoy long walks as well as afternoons spent at the dog park. Remember, though, to keep your Toy Fox Beagle leashed or inside a fenced-in area as his nose may cause him to wander off and get him in trouble. Their curious, friendly nature also often results in them being easily stolen.
