Toy Fox Terrier

The Toy Scottish Fox Terrier is the result of a mix between a Scottish Terrier and a Toy Fox Terrier. These dogs weigh under 14 pounds, but their big personalities make up for their small size. They are loyal, intelligent, and feisty, and make great watchdogs because they are so devoted to their owners. Although active, their exercise requirements are easily met with a daily walk. Though descended from hunting dogs, they now make great family pets and love the company of humans. However, they have a strong prey drive and are not well suited to homes with other small pets.

Toy Scottish Fox Terrier Breed History

The history of the Toy Scottish Fox Terrier is unclear given that it is such a new breed, but both of its parent breeds have been beloved for many years. The Scottish Terrier, originally known as the Aberdeen Terrier, originated in Scotland during the 1700s. The Scottish Terrier is suspected to have been around since as early as the 1500s – there are history books chronicling dogs bearing a striking resemblance to the Scottie, however records were not well kept, so it’s difficult to be sure. In fact, it wasn’t until the late 1800s that the breed standards for the Scottish Terrier were even defined. Until that point, the Scottish Terrier was shown as the Skye Terrier. These dogs arrived in the United States in the late 1800s and were admitted into the American Kennel Club in 1885. They have been a popular breed in the US for over 100 years and one of them even lived in the White House; Franklin D Roosevelt’s beloved Scottie, Fala. The Toy Fox Terrier (sometimes called the Ameritoy) originates in the United States and is descended from dogs including the Smooth Fox Terrier, the Italian Greyhound, and the Chihuahua. These tiny pups were bred to hunt vermin, like rabbits and rats; their small size meant they could fit in the saddlebags of hunters on horseback! Over the years their love of attention and their ability to quickly learn tricks led them to careers as circus performers. They were officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 2003, which listed their affection for watching television as one of their breed characteristics!

Toy Scottish Fox Terrier Breed Appearance

The Scottish Terrier is known for its short legs, and solid, stocky build. It has a level topline, a broad chest and a rectangular head. The Toy Fox Terrier has long legs and a fine bone structure, but the same solid build. The build of your Toy Scottish Fox Terrier will vary dependent on which parent genes are dominant. The ears of the Toy Scottish Fox Terrier are erect and the eyes are brown while the nose can be either black or brown. They have a high set tail, which may be naturally bobbed like that of the Toy Fox Terrier, or medium length and straight like that of the Scottish Terrier. These pups may inherit the wiry outer coat and soft under coat of the Scottie, or the smooth, thin coat of the Toy Fox Terrier. The coat may come in white, wheaten, black, grey, brindle, or brown, but will likely be white with patches of another color.

Toy Scottish Fox Terrier Breed Maintenance

The Scottish Terrier has a long, wiry coat with an undercoat to protect them from the cold temperatures of Scotland. Despite their long fur, their coats shed very minimally. Toy Fox Terriers have a short, smooth coat that sheds moderately. The grooming needs of your Toy Scottish Fox Terrier will depend primarily on which type of coat it inherits from the parent breeds. If your dog has the wiry coat of the Scottie, be sure to brush it weekly to prevent mats and take it to the groomer every two months to be bathed and clipped. If your dog tends more toward the coat of the Toy Scottish Terrier, occasional brushing will be sufficient to remove dead hair. Your Toy Scottish Fox Terrier is prone to sensitive or dry skin, therefore it’s best not to bathe more often than absolutely necessary. It is best to brush your pup’s teeth daily, but at least weekly, in order to prevent tooth decay and gum disease (both of which the Scottish Terrier is prone to). Frequent brushing will also help keep your dog’s breath smelling fresh!

Toy Scottish Fox Terrier Temperament

Both the Scottish Terrier and the Toy Fox Terrier are deeply loyal and devoted to their owners and it’s safe to assume the Toy Scottish Fox Terrier is the same way. They have both been described as aloof or untrusting of strangers. For this reason, they make excellent watchdogs, as they won’t hesitate to raise an alarm at the first sign of disturbance, but you can win them over with affection and kindness. These pups play well with children as long as their boundaries are respected; they do not like having their hair or tails pulled and may lose their temper if this happens. For this reason, they are not typically well suited to families with toddlers. Toy Scottish Fox Terriers typically get along with other dogs, but their feisty Terrier genes will kick in if they feel threatened and they will defend themselves. Take care to socialize your hybrid from a young age and it is likely to be a friendly playmate for other dogs. Because both parent breeds were bred to hunt vermin, the prey drive in Toy Scottish Fox Terriers is strong. They are not a great match for households with small pets, though, if socialized careful from puppyhood they may be able to coexist with a cat. These are intelligent pups. The Toy Fox Terrier is an easily trainable breed that is eager to please its owner, while the Scottish Terrier has a stubborn streak that can make training more challenging. Be sure to use reward based training methods with your Toy Scottish Fox Terrier, and you are sure to find success. These pups are energetic and will behave best when they have a consistent exercise regimen. In addition to exercise, it’s important to spend plenty of quality time with them because they are social pups who thrive on their owner’s attention.

Toy Scottish Fox Terrier Activity Requirements

Toy Scottish Terriers are an active breed that need a daily walk. If they don’t receive enough exercise they may become destructive or bark frequently. Or both! They are also intelligent dogs so mental stimulation is important for them. They are well suited to activities like agility or obedience competitions, or Earthdog trials. These dogs are happy to live in any environment, but they should be indoor pets as they require a lot of human attention. They are happy to have a yard to run around (and dig) in, as long as they have your company at the same time! These pups can adapt to any climate, but may be sensitive to the cold; if you live somewhere will a cool climate be sure to invest in a stylish sweater for your pup!
