Wee-Chon Breed History

The Wee-Chon originated in the United States, by crossing a West Highland White Terrier with a Bichon Frise. The West Highland White Terrier, also known as the Westie, comes from Scotland. Their history is shared with other Terriers like the Skye, Scottish, Dandie Dinmont, and Cairn. Westie dogs were used for fox hunting and for getting rid of rats and other vermin. It is believed the Westie is related to a breed of small earth dogs that were given to the King of France during the 17th century. Common belief is that the West Highland White Terrier is all white due to an accident that happened in the 19th century. One day, when Colonel Malcolm of Poltalloch was hunting, he confused one of his Cairns for a fox and shot him dead. The Colonel was devastated by his loss and started to breed only white dogs, this way he wouldn’t confuse them with foxes. The Westie was also known as the Poltalloch Terrier and the Roseneath Terrier. The American Kennel Club recognized this breed in 1908. The Bichon Frise is believed to have descended from the Barbet, and he is related to the Maltese, the Havanese, the Bolognese, and the Coton de Tulear. The Bichon Frise was brought to France by sailors in the 14th century, from Tenerife, Canary Islands, although the breed is thought to have originated in Italy. The breed became highly popular amongst royal circles during the reigns of King Francis I from France, and King Henry III from England, in the 16th century. Bichons also became the favorites in the Spanish royalty, and were depicted by great painters, like Goya. The breed lost popularity during the late 1800s, as they became too common. French breeders regained their interest in the Bichon Frise after World War I, and a breed standard was written in France in 1933. The breed was known as Bichon and as Tenerife, but later that year the breed was named Bichon Frise. The Bichon arrived in America in 1956 and was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1975.

Wee-Chon Breed Appearance

The Wee-Chon is a small dog. He weighs between 9 and 14 pounds and his height ranges from 9 to 12 inches. This hybrid is generally white but, although rarely, they can also be black and white. The Wee-Chon has a sweet looking face. They have triangular-shaped heads with a fairly short, flat muzzle. Their ears can stand up or fold, their eyes are rounded and dark, and their noses are black. They have double-coated long fur, and its texture varies depending on which parent breed they take more after. So, your Wee-Chon can either have a straight, silky coat or a wavy, wiry one.

Wee-Chon Breed Maintenance

Wee-Chon dogs are hypoallergenic and rarely shed, making them a great companion for allergic people. However, their fur is long and gets easily tangled, so daily brushing is recommended. You can brush him with a pin brush, and use a slicker brush for tangles and mats. Remember to always brush him before bathing, otherwise tangles will get tighter. You will need to trim his hair occasionally, especially around eyes, ears, and paws to avoid possible problems. Due to his color, you might want to use eye drops to prevent tear staining. Check and clean his ears weekly, using an ear cleanser and a cotton ball, to remove debris. You should also trim his nails monthly, and brush his teeth daily to avoid dental problems.

Wee-Chons can suffer from a variety of potentially expensive health problems. Secure pet health insurance today to avoid high veterinary care costs. Our pet insurance tool lets you compare plans from leading companies like Figo and Spot. Find the “pawfect” plan for your pet in just a few clicks!

Wee-Chon Temperament

If you are looking for a loving, cheerful companion the Wee-Chon is the dog for you. This hybrid is a super sweet, affectionate, and playful teddy-bear looking dog. They are very loving family members, and adore children. He will be eager to play with the kids, as well as cuddling with them. They are also very gentle with the elderly. They are quite smart and like to please their owners, so they follow orders quickly and are easy to train. However, it is important to socialize him when a puppy in order to avoid small dog syndrome. If properly trained, these dogs are very friendly towards other animals and dogs. They are people-dogs and suffer from separation anxiety if left alone for long periods. However, having toys to keep him entertained when left alone is very helpful.

Wee-Chon Activity Requirements

The Wee-Chon is an active small dog. He is prone to gaining weight and will require daily activity to stay healthy and happy. A 20 to 30-minute walk will help him to use up his energy and will keep him healthy. Also, taking him to a park where he can run leash-free and play with other dogs is a great activity. Releasing energy is important to keep your dog from chewing objects, since they become destructive when bored. Having toys will also keep him entertained. This hybrid adapts well to apartment living, but having a fenced-yard to run and dig in would be highly appreciated. Beware they do like to dig, so keep him far from gardens.

He is a protector all the way. He is very easy to train. He has successfully learned sit, stay, shake, lay down, roll over, dance, up, and play dead. He still needs some work on come, but he is a very smart dog. I don't even remember what life was like without him.

People often ask what breed is Benjamin since he looks like both a Westie (in his face and stocky body), but has a beautiful plumed tail and floppy ears. He has the most silky and soft fur that makes him very cuddly to be next to. He loves to be with people especially and also enjoys the company of other dogs. He has a wonderful, non-threatening temperament. We got him from an AKC-Breeder who lives less than 2 miles from us, so he's a home-grown boy whom I adopted when my youngest daughter was entering high school. Benjamin was to ease me into the empty-nest syndrome and he has done a wonderful job as our youngest, but less-demanding child. He has learned a repertoire of tricks that keep us entertained as well as stimulates us to keep him busy with new tricks to learn.

This is my second Weechon, they are brilliant dogs. I lost my Luna on the 1st May 2020 and I miss her greatly. I was really lucky to be able to adopt another Weechon from the same kennels I adopted Luna from. Nina is already proving to be just as adorable as my Luna was.

These are friendly, social, and smart dogs. They learn many words and have a mind of their own. Mine was a rescue so I was not able to socialize him as a puppy. He likes most dogs his size but barks at big dogs. He has separation anxiety so we never leave him home alone.

This is truly a delightful breed. We got a Weechon at the recommendation of a dog expert when my daughter was 9. She was a puppy of 7 weeks when we got her. She has the sweetest personality, great energy, easy to train (as food/treat motivated), smart, adores chasing a ball. Friendly to dogs and people. She makes everyone who sees her smile! We gave her lots of toys as a pup and so had very little chewing. She has been very healthy except for some trouble in her hind legs from chasing a ball. She is literally like a rocket after a ball. She lives for tummy rubs and is very affectionate. She loves to go to wherever we go, walking or in the car. Great family dog! I feel so lucky that we found this breed. We just adore her!
