Chesapeake Bay Retriever

The Weimapeake is a cross between a purebred Chesapeake Bay Retriever and a Weimaraner.  Both breeding dogs are moderately large, however, the Weimapeake has the ability to grow to the height of the Weimaraner, growing to 27 inches.  The Weimapeake is also a heavy dog, weighing around 60 to 90 pounds. They have a short, thick coat that can be brown, gray or red. The Weimapeake has retriever instincts similar to those of Chesapeake Bay Retriever.  Its webbed feet, heavy coat, along with the close working prey drive known of the Weimaraner, mean that the Weimapeake is an outstanding hunter.  As a sporting dog, they require lots of exercise and enjoy running off-leash.  This canine hybrid was originally created with the purpose of becoming a hunting dog.  Weimapeakes have been known to get bored easily, so they love to walk and play.  They make excellent family pets as they are known to be very loyal and protective.  They thrive in the company of others, however, it is recommended that they are socialized from a young age.

Weimapeake Breed History

As a fairly new hybrid, not a lot is known about the Weimapeake.  This breed is a mix of the Weimaraner and the Chessie (Chesapeake Bay Retriever) who are both recognised by the American Kennel Club.  The Chessie is skilled at retrieving birds and its genetics can be traced back to 1807.  It was recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club in 1878 and sources claim that the breed descended from the English Otterhound and the curly-coated Retriever, but the Newfoundland breed is also its ancestor. The Weimaraner was recognized by the AKC much later, in 1943. This breed originated from Germany and was created in the early 19th century by the Weimar court. The Bloodhound is part of its ancestral make-up, and some sources believe that it is in fact, a direct descendant.  The Weimapeake was originally created to try and get the best of both breeds.  It was the intention to create an ideal hunting dog that possessed speed, agility, courage, and intelligence.  The American Kennel Club recognizes both parental breeds as a sporting breed, as they are known for their hunting skills both in the woods and in water.  The Weimapeake inherits its webbed feet from both parent breeds which makes swimming and wading easy.  Sources say that the Weimapeake has been bred in mid-west America for decades, but the exact dates and whereabouts are unknown.  Although the Weimapeake is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, it is recognized by both the International Designer Canine Registry and the Designer Breed Registry as a hybrid breed. 

Weimapeake Breed Appearance

The Weimapeake is a moderately large dog, with a short-medium, thick coat, and is said to resemble a Labrador Retriever.  They are strong, quick and agile. The parent breeds are quite similar in structure but there are several differences, so the appearance of this hybrid can vary, depending on the characteristics they inherit.  Their coat is short-medium in length but the color of their coat can vary from the characteristics of the parental breeds.  The eye color of the Weimapeake can vary between hazel, amber and brown. Nose color is another variable and can differ between blue, black, or brown. Both breeds have dropped ears, however, size of ears is another variable for the Weimapeake as the ears of the Weimaraner can be medium-large in length. The muzzle of the Weimapeake is tapered and the teeth meet in scissor or level bite.  The tail is medium in length and is either straight or curved.

Weimapeake Breed Maintenance

The Weimapeake is a low maintenance hybrid breed.  It requires brushing once a week, preferably with a slicker brush, but shedding of hair is minimal.  Their coat tends to be short and heavy so it rarely becomes matted or tangled if properly maintained.  It is important to ensure that the nails of a Weimapeake are regularly maintained, and this is simply because they are a hunting dog that requires lots of exercise.  To ensure their paws (including nails) and coats are maintained properly, a professional groomer is recommended.  They can then clean out the ear area of the Weimapeake to ensure that it remains in a healthy condition.  Their teeth should also be brushed regularly and if need be, you can ask your vet to recommend a dog-friendly toothpaste.

Weimapeake Temperament

Weimapeakes are loving and loyal dogs.  They make excellent family pets as they are very friendly and affectionate.  It is important that these dogs are well socialized from a young age, and if this is the case, they will get along with people of all ages as well as other pets. These highly intelligent dogs are eager to work.  If escape is possible, they should not be left unsupervised in the yard for long periods of time, as they love to dig up flowers and shrubs, or even an escape route.  Although they are very playful, they can be calm, and in the company of strangers they tend to hold back, and remain cautious.  Weimapeakes are very protective and would not be afraid to protect you.  They thrive in the company of others and dislike being alone. It has been known for Weimapeakes to develop negative and destructive behaviors when bored, so make sure you fuss over your dog, exercise him regularly, but also have time to cuddle and play. 

Weimapeake Activity Requirements

Both the Chesapeake Bay Retriever and the Weimaraner require a lot of exercise and have high energy levels.  Without lots of exercise, the Weimapeake can become bored and develop behavioural problems, especially if not in the company of others as they require mental stimulation also.  They are eager to please their owner, but can also be stubborn. The Weimapeake tends to enjoy agility training and this is a great way to burn some of their energy, as well as spending quality time with them whilst stimulating their mind.
