The Yorkie Pin is a spritely hybrid designer dog whose toy-like appearance belies its roots as a natural born hunter and strategist. A terror to rat-kind, Yorkie Pins come from two breeds who were created for the express purpose of hunting down rats; the Yorkshire Terrier and the Miniature Pinscher. As a result of having two parents with vastly different appearances, Yorkie Pins may have intensely varied physical appearances. But what does tend to be consistent with this breed are their energetic and friendly mannerisms coupled with their intelligent personalities and adventurous spirits. Yorkie Pins can be stubborn pups and those adventurous spirits of theirs can cause them to be quite a handful sometimes, but they are no less loving and affectionate dogs who make great additions to families as well as excellent mouse hunters if properly trained.

Yorkie Pin Breed History

As a designer dog breed, YorkiePins are not as well known as many other breeds due to how recently they've emerged on the scene. The trend of mixing various dogs breeds together in order to extrapolate their most desirable traits into one pup really came into full swing within the last 30 years or so. More likely than not, the Yorkie Pin was first bred into existence sometime during the late 1980's, early 1990's,  as is the case with many designer dog breeds. But other than the little information that can be gained from conjecture, not much is known about our friendly neighborhood Yorkie Pins. The Yorkshire Terrier and Miniature Pinscher, on other hand, are much more well known than their hybrid offspring, and looking into their pasts can help shed some light on the Yorkie Pin's somewhat ambiguous existence. Yorkshire Terriers were bred to work as top-notch rat catching machines, chasing down and rooting out scores of vermin in 1800's England. Indeed, the Yorkie Pin still possesses the Yorkshire Terrier's rat killing instincts, as Yorkie Pins are apt to give to chase to smaller creatures that come into their vicinity. Yorkie Pins receive a double dosage of that rat hunting instinct from their Mini Pin parents as well. Like the Yorkie, the Miniature Pinscher is also a renowned rat catcher whose skills were so keen that the American Kennel Club recognized the  Mini Pin's exceptional abilities in 1925. The Miniature Pinscher's origins are also steeped in mystery, as it's exact birth date is a topic of debate, but its irrefutably keen rat hunting instincts have served it well all throughout its days and, combined with the Yorkie's skills, will help the Yorkie Pin to stand out as an adept hunter and lovable companion.

Yorkie Pin Breed Appearance

Designer dog breeds, and hybrid dog breeds in general, tend to have wildly varied appearances based on how much they take to one of their parents' genes over the other's. It's an interesting and fascinating phenomenon in dogs that has the potential allow multiple puppies from the same litter to have noticeably different physical traits and appearances. Yorkie Pins will always be small, compact dogs like both of their parents and their consistently brown eyes will always greet you with kindness and curiosity, but their coats and ear shapes can differ vastly based on which parents' genes have manifested more strongly. Yorkie Pins also seem to consistently possess black and brown coats, with an occasional slight dash of white fur, which helps give their breed a more distinct hallmark, but the rest is left up to genetics; Yorkie Pins can have longer, billowing coats like the Yorkshire Terrier, replete with dagger-like Yorkie ears, or they can have a shorter and smoother coat with longer, more angular ears like the Miniature Pinscher. Yorkie Pins will always have a cute and welcoming appearance either way, but the potentially vast differences in appearances is very noteworthy.

Yorkie Pin Breed Maintenance

The Yorkie Pin's coat is another factor that's heavily determined by which of its two parents the dog in question favors the most. There are Yorkie Pins with short coats that have been borrowed from the Miniature Pinscher and will only need to be groomed once a week with pin and slicker brushes, and there also Yorkie Pins that have longer coats, just like their Yorkshire Terrier parents, and will need to be groomed daily with a comb and pin brush combo. Designer breeds often exhibit this tendency to genetically divulge to an extreme degree like this, so experienced dog owners will likely be prepared for either scenario. But the inexperienced dog owner would do well to try and anticipate the needs of their newborn Yorkie Pin's far before they've set a paw in your household. New, inexperienced, or uncomfortable dog owners should also never attempt to clip a dogs nails without proper guidance, knowledge, and confidence.

Yorkie Pin Temperament

Yorkie Pin's are one of those quintessentially pugnacious breeds that have big attitudes despite their small frames. Yorkie Pins are heralds of good times and affectionate play, but they can also be quite stubborn and are want to getting themselves in trouble when left unattended. Speaking of which, Yorkie Pin's are very social dogs who love living it up as the life of the party. The drawback, for some prospective owners, is that Yorkie Pins absolutely cannot stand to be on their own; they will panic, become anxious, and act frantically is they begin to feel abandoned, so households incapable of constantly providing companionship to the Yorkie Pin will not make a good home for this breed. Despite the Yorkie Min Pin's self confident and autonomous demeanor,  they will need constant supervision to ensure that they don't get into any trouble or begin to feel left behind.

Yorkie Pin Activity Requirements

Being smaller, more compact dogs in nature, Yorkie Pin's don't have an excessive amount of energy from the get go. But considering that the Yorkie Pin is a hybrid designer breed on top of that, one will also have to take certain other factors into account; as previously mentioned, many designer breeds can end up inheriting traits and resembling one of their parents more than the other. This factor determines whether designer breeds like the Yorkie Pin will favor its first parent, the Yorkshire Terrier, more and need about 30 minutes of physical activity per day or if it will favor its other parent, the Miniature Pinscher, more and require 60 minutes of play time daily. Regardless of which parent the Yorkie Pin resembles more, shooting for to cover an estimated 6 miles of walking distance per week should be your goal if you aim to keep the Yorkie Pin fit as a fiddle.

Very intelligent, no problem leaving them alone as far as separation anxiety , however I bought sisters , so they have each other, picking up training easily, one is higher strung than the other and has the zoomies many times during the day, the other is more affectionate , they love everyone and every dog they meet. I think potty training is going ok, training two at a time can be more challenging so that could be it, did very well with paper training.

We adopted our yorkie pin as an adult, so I’m not sure how much her former life has influenced her personality. She is quite timid and has very sensitive hearing but loves people. She doesn’t quite know how to “play” and instead just growls/snaps and chases other dogs but is not aggressive at all. She doesn’t play with toys and is extremely picky about treats. She loves cuddling up on the couch and is extremely attached to me (more than my husband). She will stay by my side when off leash and come when I call her despite having very little training. She took about one week to become leash trained when we first got her. She’s very sensitive to cold but loves wearing dog clothes/sweaters so that is an easy solution. She is an adorable and very low maintenance pup. She never gets into trouble or chews things. Passers-by often ask if she is a puppy even though she is about 7. She has that sweet puppy face with sparkling brown eyes and triangle ears that stick up but also flop over. Overall she has been an amazing addition to our family!
