North Valdez

The Shana Anderson Dog Park is where all the cool canines hang out. Don’t let your pooch miss out on spending time with his pals. There’s plenty of room for romping and wrestling where he can dart and dash around with his playmates to get rid of his pent up energy. If your pup prefers to be on a trail, head out on the John Hunter Memorial Trail. Wander through coastal forests while getting in a great workout. The trail crosses Solomon Gulch Creek and can be steep in some areas. It’s about 4 miles round trip, and at one point combines with the Trans Pipeline Service road, so you’ll get a glimpse of the oil line.

South Valdez

After a day of hiking and exploring, stop by The Fat Mermaid for a bite to eat. The Fat Mermaid Burger is a local favorite and is especially for people who are not interested in counting calories. Piled high with cheese, bacon, sausage, Canadian bacon, and pepperoni, this burger is definitely for meat lovers. Lighter options are also available. Your pooch can join you at one of the outdoor tables that overlook Port Valdez. This area is also home to Bear Paw RV Park and Bayside RV Park. If you’re traveling in an RV, make a reservation at one of these dog friendly spots and stay a few extra days in this puptastic town.

West Valdez

If your pup is up for a challenge, venture down the Section B Shoup Bay Trail. This trail provides amazing views, but you have to be willing to pay the price. Be prepared for both gradual and steep climbs as you make your way through the spruce forests. You may also encounter mud and overgrowth. But once you make it up to the ridge, you’ll be treated to views of the Shoup Bay and Shoup Glacier. Follow the trail down switchbacks into a small bay. The trail is about 12 miles round trip, so if you decided to go the whole distance, make sure your pooch has the strength.

East Valdez

The Lowe River Access Trail is an often overlooked trail that takes you right down to Lowe River. Stroll along the river with your favorite furry friend. Although the water may look tempting to your pooch, keep in mind that it is icy cold glacier water and is not safe for swimming. While hanging out by the river, you may even see some rafters floating out of the nearby Keystone Canyon. While in the area, check out Bridal Veil Falls. After gazing at the waterfall, follow the three mile round trip Goat Trail. The Wagon Trail is another option. Clocking at six miles round trip, this trail will definitely tucker out your pup.

Wortmanns

If seeing a glacier is on your pup’s bucket list, then make your way over to Wortmanns and visit the Worthington Glacier State Recreational Area.  Drive 40 minutes east of Valdez on a beautiful stretch of Richardson Highway. Once at the recreation area, you can take a flat, easy trail to the base of the glacier. But for dogs that thrive on adventure, there is a trail that leads to a ridge adjacent to the top of the glacier. It’s a little steep in places, and your pup needs to stick to the trail, but you simply can’t beat the scenery and you’ll love chilling with your pup next to an Alaskan glacier.
