The vibrant city center of Old Town has its share of green space to escape to! Binette Park is located right on Main Street, and is also alongside the scenic Penobscot River. This park features a pretty pavilion that’s perfect for gatherings with friends or family. For a heart pumping jog or a leisurely stroll, you and your pooch can enjoy the walking track and large grassy areas, all with a view of the river. This park also has a playground and restrooms available. Leashed dogs are welcome! When it’s time for a frosty treat, head over to Dairy Queen, right nearby. Here you can dig into a blizzard or burger next to your canine companion at one of the nine dog-friendly tables.

West Old Town

In West Old Town, you can find some great places to escape into the great outdoors! Located along the lovely Perch Pond, you can find Sewall Park. This hidden gem is just off of Poplar Street, and great place for picnics and family gatherings, with the family dog of course. The park features water access, restrooms and drinking water. There is also a large multi-purpose field that your pup will love to romp in! You can enjoy all this in peace and quiet with beautiful lake views. Dogs are welcome to join in on the fun, as long as they stay leashed and get picked up after.

University of Maine

In the neighboring town of Orono, you can find another puppy paradise. Just a 7 minute drive from Old Town, in the University of Maine neighborhood, you can find the Piney Knoll Conservation Area. The 57 acre parcel is a great place to go when you and your pup are itching to get outside, but don’t want to go too far. This riverside woodland is known for it’s hiking, cross-country skiing and bird-watching. You can access trails from Colburn Drive, Marsh Lane and Orchard Trails. Leashed dogs are welcome to explore with their humans. If you’re looking for a place to crash after all your adventures, head over to the University Inn Academic Suites. They welcome two dogs of any size for a small fee. Be sure to call ahead to ensure a pet friendly room!

Gould Landing

Another woofderful place to check out in the town of Orono, is Gould’s Landing. This scenic nature preserve is located in the Gould Landing neighborhood, under a 20 minute drive from Old Town. In this park you can find a boat launch, beach area on Pushaw Lake, and picnic areas to kick back at relax at. It’s from here that you can access some great walking trails as well! These walking trails will lead you through broadleaf forests and along the shoreline. There are benches and lookout points along the trail. Dogs are welcome as long as they stay under control, and you follow Leave No Trace principles. If you want to stay in the wilderness a little longer, check out Pushaw Lake Campground. The campsites allow one well behaved pet of any size for no additional fee.

Milford

A hop south across the border into the small town of Milford, just over 20 minutes from Old Town, brings you to another natural wonderland. The Sunkhaze Meadows National Wildlife Refuge. This sprawling refuge comprises of 11,485 acres, the second largest peatland in Maine. There are about 10 miles of trails winding through the wetlands and bogs that are open to the public and their pups. A great option to check out is the Johnson Brook Trail! This trail is a 3.5 mile loop with many boardwalk sections that are easy on the paws and the eyes. There are also sections passing through a cedar swamp and forested uplands. Leashed dogs are welcome to join their two-legged friends, just be sure to bring waste bags and plenty of drinking water for your parched pup.
