It is about ten miles from Four Lakes, but the Iller Creek Conservation Area Trail feels like it’s a million miles away from the city drama. This is a two-mile trail that usually takes around two hours to complete if you are walking with your dog on his leash. It is definitely one of the biggest conservation areas around and it is fairly new. The paths are never very crowded, which makes it just perfect for enjoying any day of the week. Spokanimal Dog Park is another delight that is only ten minutes away. It is the only dog park you will find around here, and it is worth every bark. The fenced-in area has a ton of room to room and even some woods that you can explore without having to keep your dog on her leash. There are lots of other fur friends to run and play with. Your dog may even make some friends! The lake is a short walk away, but your pal will need to be on leash for that trip, as it is dangerous to swim in.

The three-mile trail walks you through nature at your own pace. There are plenty of trees for Fido to bark at, flowers to stop and smell, and even small animals to make the leaves rustle. This is pure nature, so you will need to bring your own water for you and your dog. Don’t forget to bring some waste bags along, too. No one likes a litterbug! Even though it’s slightly outside of Cheney, you can still get to Columbia Plateau Trail State Park in about ten minutes. This is only part of the 38 miles of the Rails-to-Trails system in the area. This path was built on the site of the former rail line. Not only will you see amazing signs that nature is alive and well, but you will also see markers along the way highlighting the route’s historical significance. There are even mile markers counting down to Spokane. This side of the trail is paved and easy to travel for everyone. Please keep your dog on his leash.

Fish Lake Trail is the other half of the Rails-to-Trails system in Cheney. It is a little more underdeveloped than the Columbia Plateau Trail. It runs along the Snake River, and you can often see critters running through the meadow. Parts of the trail are unpaved, but other parts are clearly marked, so you may want to bring a map. You will need to keep your dog on his leash through these areas. You can walk the once active rail line and read the markers highlighting interesting facts along the way. Don’t forget to bring water and waste bags!
