Despite its popularity, however, not many people know that it was actually a live-action remake of an earlier animated film entitled One Hundred and One Dalmatians, which was also produced by Disney and first released in 1961. Even fewer people know that the films were based on a children’s novel called The Hundred and One Dalmatians, by Dodie Smith. The book was first published in 1956. Notwithstanding the story’s origin, both film versions were major hits for Walt Disney and played a huge role in making the Dalmatian among the most famous dog breeds in the world.

Although some of the characters from the book were altered and renamed in the film versions, one thing remained constant - the central character, a Dalmatian named Pongo. Because of his pivotal role, he is considered to be the most famous Dalmatian out of all the others. In 101 Dalmatians, Pongo is owned by Roger Dearly, a video game designer. When Pongo sets eyes on a female Dalmatian, named Perdy, he chases her across the park. This leads to Roger meeting Perdy’s owner, Anita Campbell-Green.

Soon enough, Roger and Anita fall for one another and so do Pongo and Perdy. This resulted in both Anita and Perdy getting pregnant. When Anita’s boss, a designer named Cruella De Vil, finds out about her pregnancy, she initially gets mad. However, she rejoices when she finds out that Perdy is also pregnant. After Perdy gives birth, Cruella offers to buy the litter but the Dearlys refuse. Frustrated, Cruella asks her henchmen to steal the Dalmatian puppies. It was revealed that along with Pongo’s 15 puppies, Cruella also has another 84 Dalmatian puppies in her possession, whose fur she plans to turn into coats.

Pongo and Perdy, as well as Roger and Anita, go through great lengths to find the puppies and prove Cruella is the suspect. Luckily, the dogs work together in order to outwit Cruella and escape from captivity. Ultimately, Cruella was caught for her crimes and the puppies were reunited with their parents and human owners. Moreover, the couple decides to adopt the other 84 Dalmatians for a total of 101 Dalmatians, thus the film’s name.

Because of the success of the film, a sequel, entitled 102 Dalmatians, was released in 2000. Two video games, called 101 Dalmatians: Escape from DeVil Manor and 102 Dalmatians: Puppies to the Rescue, were also developed based on the 1996 and 2000 film, respectively.
