Introduction

If we could rewind time and ask Adventure Time series creator Pendleton Ward if he thought that his show would reach the heights of worldwide critical acclaim and adoration that it has over the past 10 years or so, he'd probably shrug and do a funky little dance as a reply. Pendleton Ward has often been quoted saying that Adventure Time is as equally about Jake the Dog as it is about Finn the Human. Fans of the show will be able to attest to that claim, as Jake is just as prominently featured in the series as Finn is - whether by virtue of Finn and Jake always appearing next to one another or by virtue of Jake starring in episodes of his own, Adventure Time equally tells Jake's story as it does Finn's.

But then again, Adventure Time never was the kind of show to follow in the footsteps of others and Pendleton Ward arguably created the show in order to deviate from the norm. It was eventually revealed in the episode "Joshua and Margaret Investigations" that the source of Jake's powers comes from a strange being called Warren Ampersand. Warren was a creature from outer space who, long ago, attacked Jake's parents and left a blue, bulbous sack atop Joshua's head. It was from that sack that Jake emerged, meaning that Jake's biological father, to some degree or another, is a shapeshifting alien. This is the reason why Jake can shapeshift, meaning that Jake is a Dog/Alien Hybrid.

The cast of Adventure Time is filled with some of the most eccentric, idiosyncratic, and memorable characters to have ever existed in the history of animation. Without a doubt, a large portion of the show's success can be attributed to the characters who have made so many millions of fans laugh, cry, and dream ever since the show's first episode aired on April 5, 2010.
