Archer Dog Names

Sterling Archer, the “world’s deadliest spy”, the epitome of manliness, and the heavy heavy drinker has a soft spot for dogs? Perhaps, or perhaps it was all just a confusion, but nonetheless a classic episode of the intelligently sarcastic animated series brought an unexpected guest star – an English Mastiff named Kazak. Kazak, of course is a reference to a dog of the same name from the Kurt Vonnegut novel called The Sirens of Titan, which is just one of many references that this sitcom offers in its episodes.

So, what is the story of Kazak? Firstly, Kazak was portrayed to be a very important field agent trapped in Morocco whom Lana and Archer must retrieve. It turns out that Kazak is quite a big dog, which is a blessing to all the lucky English Mastiff owners but a bit of a predicament for secret agents trying to get out of a foreign country alive. However, he is such a wonderful dog full of love with the kindest face a dog could ever have and that is why it is no wonder he became a fan favorite.

Sterling and Lana were naturally baffled when they saw a big dog they were supposed to retrieve but later found out that it was the microfilm around his neck they were after. However, the trip is not without incidents of course. At one point, Kazak the friendly Mastiff pukes in the car due to motion sickness and overeating on kofta, a type of meatball dish eaten in the Middle East and the Balkans. Actually it was Sterling who encouraged Kazak to eat so much, which, of course, makes Lana angry with him, just as it always happens.

Fun fact – the name of this particular episode is Un Chien Tangerine, which, when translated means “A Tangerine Dog”, which is a reference to another movie directed by Luis Buñuel called Un Chien Andalou (An Andalusian Dog). A plethora of references in this episode, both related to Archer and Lana and Kazak the dog, prove how much thinking and research goes into the creation of the show and how you can always find new layers when you re-watch the episodes.

Finally, about Kazak’s quite unique name. First off, it’s a palindrome, meaning that it looks and reads the same whether you read it normally or backwards. Secondly, it can be a reference to Kazakh people, or it can mean sweater in Turkish. Whichever interpretation you choose it is bound to be a story-worthy one!
