Athlete Dog Name Considerations

Given the number of athletes that exist, there is certainly no shortage of names to choose from. But if you’re looking to give your dog something more than just a great athlete’s name, say, something with some actual meaning, you’ll have to do a bit more legwork, pun intended. Before you start narrowing down your choices, don’t forget to take into consideration your dog’s breed type, appearance, and personality, as they are all great shortcuts to coming up with something both clever and appropriate.

For instance, for something simple, if your dog is a Czech breed, such as a Cesky Terrier or Fousek, the name Martina would be appropriate — especially if they also love tennis balls! If they love to chase and kick around soccer balls, maybe Pele, Ronaldo, or Messi would be more appropriate, the latter especially if they don’t keep themselves particularly clean. If they’re good at just about everything, then Thorpe, Bo, Jackson, Zaharias or Sanders would all be great choices.

Whatever you choose, try several avenues to narrow it down to your favorite sports (and athletes themselves if need be), then see if any of the remaining names can have meaning beyond just their titles, such as the Messi/messy example above. Many athletes already had notable names, so being able to work with them on multiple levels will provide you that many more ways they can fit your dog. Chances are, when you do finally find it, it’ll stick like a good landing.
